Modifier explination on a historical league
Hi,
I just picked up ootp22 for the first time in 10 years and need a crash coarse on the modifiers. I am playing a historical league with teams from the 1930's-1940's and set the modifier year to 1940 (as a happy medium) Teams include the '46 Redsox, '39 Yankees, '35 Tigers, '33 Senators and so on. Can someone explain in simple terms how the modifiers work. I am noticing some players such as '46 Ted Williams and '27 Babe Ruth are not hitting home runs as they should so started to wonder if all players IN MY LEAGUE were hitting less home runs than actual Im about 60% done with the season, and checked with Baseball Reference and seems most players are in line with act home runs, just a few outliers. Williams only has 9 and hit 41 while ruth only has 18 and hit 60 in '27 through 90 games, (No injuries) could it be simply they are having "off years" and the pitching is better with such a league set up. I have to keep reminding myself that HRs were much less back then because I have been conditioned to see so much more now. I experimented with the HR modifiyer which was a .284 and changed it to .40 and noticed more Hr's but lopsided larger scores, 18-4. 13-2 etc. So are the modifiers based just on the year I choose to use (1940) so in hits it set to 1.001. does that mean hits should be 1% more and the HR modifyer .284 mean that there will be about 28% home runs for all at bats?? Also, on a different note, how do you go back to the previous screen, is there a shortcut other than the icon on the top left? Thanks! |

Just a few is an indication the league is functioning properly. "and the pitching is better with such a league set up" Actually the average pitching AND average hitting talent is increased. And the scale from best to worst is compressed. The result of this is on average both batters and pitchers under perform real life. Don't confuse individual outliers with the overall performance. |

Thanks Brad, so I think I understand. The league will adjust close to league averages but some players will under perform and some over perform but averages out over the entire league.
The problem I am seeing in my season using different teams from the 30's-40's is that the bigger power stars in the league are not hitting home runs close to what they should, while the avg. power and less power hitters are on track and hitting hrs, close to what they should. For example Im 90 games in (154 game season) and Williams has only hit 5 Hrs, (hit 41 in real life) Jimmy Fox 12 (hit 36 in real life), Babe Ruth (13, hit 60) Al Simmons (12, hit 36) Joe Dimaggio (13, hit 30) while others (less power) are on track to hit about what they should. (players that hit within 10-20 hrs, will hit hr's in that range) So Im not sure why the lack of power for the guys who hit over 30 or so Hrs in their perspective year. I have the league modifier set to 1940 which should be fine given the era, but I have the "Automatically import historical player creation modifier" unchecked (mainly because im not sure what it does and what relation it has with the league modifier) |

That's really weird on the HRs. Play some more and see what happens.
I don't know about the player creation modifiers but I think it applies only to fictional players in a fictional game. OOTP is actually several games, historical, historical players in a fictional setting (what you're doing), and all fictional. But the game manual and menu screens treat it all as one game. |

In 1940 the average was 60 HR per team with a .267/.334/.388
You are filling the league with great teams and there simply isn't enough room in the league totals that season for you to get great performances from all those great players from those great teams you are putting in there. The 1939 Yankees for example had an .825 OPS, which is fine if they are playing in 1939 with the other 15 weaker teams in the league, but they are not going to stand out as much with a league of all great teams. My suggestion is to use a different season other than 1940 for your settings, perhaps a season with about 150-160 HR per team. |

Hey Garlon, thanks for the explanation of the effects of season totals.
Your data for 1940 matches what is on BR but BR includes the Negro League teams. BR has taken the total home runs and divided it by the number of teams which does equal 60 home runs per team. But some of the Negro League teams played as few as 20 games. There's no adjustment in the BR average for games played. From the individual league totals the AL hit 883 HRs and the NL 688 HRs for an ALNL total of 98 per team. Raising the league totals so batters achieve their historical numbers means pitchers won't achieve theirs. I don't know that there's any good solution to this situation. It's not reasonable to expect historic outputs from non historic inputs. |

Hi guys, So here is my take after crunching some numbers the last couple days on my league set up and statistical comparisons. In a nutshell, after playing 99 games my thought was that OOTP was is not good at simulating so called "realistic" results using teams from different years, even if its in the same decade. However I was only looking at a few individual players as comparison to real life stats and not the big picture.
Anyway, Once I really dug into the numbers I enthusiastically realized that OOTP CAN AND DOES play out very realistic results with whatever league, teams and years you decide to set up (with the right settings) even if its in my own mind, but what-else is there as long as I feel good that the game is performing the way it should But I would really appreciate your input and advice based on my findings since its the first league I set up. With that said, I still think my league has one issue with Home Runs. Everything else seems to be in line with the way the teams and stats should perform. One thing I should not to Garlens point.. I added four really bad teams thinking it would help to level out the league and player totals a little 1) The first think I did was I downloaded each of my leagues teams player stats from BR and compared it to the first 99 games of my league. Since I have different teams from the 30's and 40's I had to painstakingly do this so I could have a fair league total comparisons. 2) I compared the more important stats of real vs my ootp league (through 99 games) Attachment 805275 REAL LIFE VS MY LEAGUE: Avg. Runs per game 4.99 vs 4.73 hits 9.57 vs 9.56 hrs 0.63 vs 0.55 (see ted williams, babe ruth and others) sb's 0.36 vs 0.36 K's 3.45 vs 3.83 BA .276 vs .273 Attachment 805281 Pitching: (Real life vs My league) ERA 3.74 vs. 4.06 (Facing better hitting teams era will go up) GC 44% vs 30% (I understand better teams= less CG's) HITS 9.1 vs 9.6 Runs 4.3 vs 4.7 Hr's 0.5 vs 0.5 HITTING AND PITCHING COMBINED: (AVG PER GAME) HITS = 9.3 VS 9.6 RUNS = 4.5 VS 4.7 HR'S- 0.53 VS 0.55 So like I said, I think everything looks good as a whole, based on better hitters on better teams vs better piching and vise versa. So I can live and sleep with the numbers, except I think HRs are too scarce. So I took a look at each individual player's Hrs through my 99 games vs real life 150+ games and here are the results. (Sorted by Real Life Player Hrs) Many of the bigger power stars are not hitting as many home runs as I THINK they would in real life (in my fantasy league) even though they are facing better pitchers and playing in various different parks (see below). The order of Home run leaders seems to be fine but for example players like Babe Ruth is hitting 48% less hr's in my league (again though 99 games) vs 1927 and only projected to hit 31 vs 60 in 1927. Other players like Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons, Hank Greenburg etc. should be hitting more. The leader Gherig seems fine at 29 (projected to hit 45) Then there are some who are projected to hit slightly more than actual, which I can live with. Note: I have injuries set to rarely, no trades, no susp. no nuttin. Players are basically playing every day with a rest here and there. So that brings me to why and what should I do about it so I can sleep. ![]() Some of my basic thoughts are that 1) yes, they are facing more dominate pitching, but not all are great and four teams have bad pitching staffs. 2) They are playing in different parks on the road vs parks they played in real life. I included the ball park factors in the spreadsheet, but can't make a conclusion based on that. Seems most parks are under 1.000 avg. of all parks is .831. Don't know enough of how the park settings work to mess with them and make a conclusion. 3) MODIFIERS! I am using 1940 as the base. (average league year is 1938) 1) Wondering if I should change the 1940 numbers to my actual leauge totals??? So for example in 1940 teams hit a total of 1,571 hr's and in my league teams hit a total of 1,755 hr's . (Acutal hrs not ootp leauge) If I do that, should I bring hits down? 2) edit the power rankings of players who are hitting much less home runs. Im know I don't want to mess with the park factors though since most avg. power hitters are fine. TED WILLIAMS POWER OUTAGE. Williams has only hit 6 hrs vs 38 act. One thing I noticed on Ted Williams player profile, is that he is the only one that does not have a projection for HR's. I recently brought his power up so Im not sure if this did anything to his stats, because there is no history. Can I import a NEW TED WILLIAMS into the game? The easiest option is to select a different season for the league totals, but yes, if you were to add up the historical league totals from those specific teams you are importing that could work too. However, there are more to league totals than just the battings stats though. Your idea will work though if implemented properly.
I suggest trying the 1953 settings for the league and see if you like those results. |

That's the number the batters hit. That's unlikely to be the number the pitchers gave up. Remember you have a selection of pitchers better than average, just like you have a selection of hitters better than average. There is probably a huge difference between number hit and number allowed. So what is realistic performance for the batters in this league? Not what they achieved real life, because they're facing better than real life pitchers. Realistic is the concept I mentioned earlier, that in a league of stars, realistic is that both batters and pitchers under perform real life. So really the league totals should be the average of what the hitters did and what the pitchers allowed. |

Well I kinda already did that and your right, it took me all day.
![]() But I see your point, batters hit 1751 hr's and pitchers gave up 1421 hrs, so a little less, so yes I would expect Hrs to be less. In my theory, everything else is pretty close to actual, runs, hits, Avg. Era. Sb's, etc. Actual team hrs per game for my league teams are 0.63 per game while my ootp league through 99 games is 0.55. Actual Pitchers hrs allowed and ootp pitchers hrs allowed are equal. 0.55 to 0.55. I could live with the number of overall hrs hit in my league if the top power bats hit more hr's since the avg power bats are hitting hrs within their means. having a few really bad teams in the league probably helps even out the rest of the stats, But I think certain players like Ruth would hit more than the projected 31 hrs in my fantasy league when he hit 60 real life. Same goes for Foxx, Simmons Etc. who will hit well below the hr numbers. I think what I will try is to increase the hr modifier from .284 to .312 and see what happens. Im not sure about using another decade, because of things like pitchers not going as long (ie. complete games), sb's, k's etc. But I am satisfied with how the games AI is doing what it is suppose to do with this type of a set up. |

By default the game tries to balance the historical IPouts per GS with the CG% of a given season. I set up the game to only target IPouts/GS for my own use though.
1940 IPouts/GS was 20.7 1953 IPouts/GS was 19.5 1940 CG% was 44% 1950 CG% was 34% 1940: .268/.334/.391 1953: .264/.336/.397 |

I suspect the game doesn't rate him to hit 60 HRs in 1927 even if the rate on single year stats is selected. Because 60 is clearly his max ability and if he were rated for 60 he might hit 75. (Someone here has the ability to calculate how often that would happen, but not me.) So in our games Ruth hitting 60 in 1927 has a lot of chance involved, just as it did real life. But but chance being involved he might hit 60 in 1926 or 1928. In a more extreme case, would you want Norm Cash rated to hit .361 in 1961? If he's rating that way he might hit .400. And his RL BA is .271, Hitting .361 is the best Cash could ever do with a combination of skill and all the breaks for a year. |

The game is not adjusting 1yr recalc down for any players. The reason they generally do not perform quite as well for you is most likely a result of the game using the best players in the league as much as possible, both batters and pitchers. This makes OOTP more competitive than the leagues were historically generally. If you play with real lineups and transactions though you can get those great seasons, like Maris hitting 61 HR but other things like the import settings come into play too.

I understand the 67% number may not be applicable at the high end. Its seems to me, although I've done no calculations, that a lot of the home run increase is due to previously low HR players hitting a lot more while increases at the top may be less. Like Middle infielders hitting 20 HRs instead of 5.

You are right. The game does make an adjustment for imports on real stats as it attempts to take into account park factors. When using neutralized stats you get a more direct import from the neutralized stats because the park factors have been taken into account.
Roger Maris in 1961 hit 61 HR in 590 AB but Yankee stadium increased HR by LHB by about 9%, but that means his road games were tougher to hit HR though. When you factor the road games he had about a 3.8% advantage that season for hitting HR from playing half of his games at Yankee Stadium. 61/1.038 = 58.76 (58.76/590) * 550 = 54.78 = 55 Remember OOTP will set everything per 550 AB in the editor for players. I don't know what to thing about this.
Concerning Real Stats the manual says this: Real Stats: The "standard Lahman" option. Current player ratings will be assigned based on a player's historical statistics. So, in this case, a player who played in a hitter-friendly park throughout his career could end up with inflated ratings. That indicates nothing is done, no adjustments. Yet Maris comes up rated for 47 HRs. Instead of park adjustment is this perhaps adjusted to modern neutral era as indicated in the editor? Which at this point I'd assume to be 2019. Yet your calculations above appear to indicate the amounts shown in the editor are for the current year of the game, in this case 1961. Which would actually be a lot more useful. That part of the manual is incorrect then. The game does make an adjustment to real stats so that you can still use the park factors. Otherwise you will have a player with inflated ratings playing in a park that will inflate their ratings even more. So with real stats the game does some internal adjustment.
With neutralized stats this was done using a different method and the game will import the player ratings directly from the neutralized stats file in the database and not make any additional adjustments by referencing the ballpark factors since those factors were already used when creating the neutralized file. |

I don't know if this adds the convo, but I pretty much exclusively play real stats, 1-year recalc, historical txns enabled... IOW, the season-replay settings - and I pretty much NEVER see guys like Ruth, Maris, Mantle, Kiner, Hack Wilson, Foxx, Greenberg come all that close to their epic/high HR seasons. Usually, their HR's by year make it look as if 3- or 5-year re-calc is on (which it's not). This doesn't seem to apply, though, to batting avg, as guys like Teddy Williams, Ty Cobb, etc., DO seem to have their .400+ seasons on schedule...FWIW.
