Meaning of "Real" stats "Neutralized" stats "optimize for single season"

These questions came up in the Historical forum as topic drift and I thought I'd post about it here for a wider discussion. For example, how do players ratings differ depending on how they are imported? For example optimized for single season or career, real or neutralized, and into what year.

Previous discussion if interested... drifts to these issues about post 13 or 14.

Following is imported ratings for Roger Maris 61 home run season. Not at all what I'd expect. And career appears to be multi year averaging even though single year rating base is selected.

I ran the 61 season on optimized for single season and neutralized stats.. Maris hit 61 real life and is rated for 55. But Mantle who hit 54 real life is rated for 65!!! Hard to blame it on neutralization. These guys played in the same park.

Anyway, I really don't understand what's going on here, but I fear there's been something lost in the calculations.

Interesting thread. I realized that real stat ratings had been adjusted for ballpark factors but wasn't sure of the difference between real stats and neutralized stats.

From what I can tell "real" stats are neutralized to the park factors in the game and "neutralized" stats are neutralized to some other set of park factors.

I have just determined that importing the 1961 Yankees as a team give Maris a different home run total than importing him as a player, either real or neutralized.

HRs... real 47, with team 50, neutralized 55.

It would be really nice if there was an explanation about why this is right. But I suspect it isn't.
