How to Import Fictional Players
In case anyone searches for this in the future and, like I was, is confused why they can't get it to work, here are some things you might be doing wrong:
Note that these instructions work for OOTP22. 0) If it's not crystal clear, when people talk about importing/exporting rosters, they're talking about the function in League Settings > Export/Import (League Abbrev) Rosters. And it will export a "*_rosters.txt" file in your league's import_export folder. 1) If you're wanting to add players from one league to another, you can't just import more players. You first need to create the same number of fictional players as you want to add. Then you need to give those new player IDs to the players you want to import (by editing the "*_rosters.txt" file). The created players will be overwritten. 1a) Before you do this though, go to League > Reports & Info > List All (League Abbrev) Players and on the right see how players it says the league currently has. When you replace the player ID #s you're going to start with this #+1. That is, if your league has 750 players and you want to add 250, the ID #s of the players you import will be 751-1000. 1b) The way to add fictional players is to go to League > Reports & Info > Free Agents > Actions > Create Fictional Players > then scroll, enter the # of players you want to create, and press Create Players. 2) You could edit the txt file in a text editor, but I'd recommend using a spreadsheet app like OpenOffice Calc or Excel to make replacing the player IDs easier. Just note that you will need to save it as a txt file. You can import a differently named file from a different folder, but it has to be a txt file. That is, you can't use a csv or ods or xls file. 2a) The *_rosters.txt file says, "//NOTE: Player and team names are purely cosmetic and will not be used when importing rosters from this file!". That's not true. The player names will be used. I've edited names this way. The team names part is probably true as it uses team ID #s. 2b) You can delete the lines starting with "//". They're called comment delimiters and OOTP will ignore them upon import. 2c) Be careful of weird characters that your spreadsheet program may convert. For example, the forename Zózimo may become Z?Ã?³zimo. You will need to use a text editor to correct them back before you import them. 3) Just because it says "Import Complete" doesn't mean it worked. In fact, if it flashes that really quickly without seeming to do anything, it most likely didn't work. If, instead, it says "Importing Rosters" at the top for a few seconds, it probably did work.
