For what it's worth (precisely nothing), I also think Bauer started it with the intention of making MLB look foolish and to say "If it's allowed for others, then it's allowed for me"

Personally, I don't think he'd be the least bit bothered if MLB cracked down on it, as opposed to many other pitchers that are [allegedly] doing it

Bauer will make as much money, THIS year alone, that he's made in his entire career. You're right, now that he's been paid, he doesn't care at all. He will win his share of games behind an excellent LAD offense, even without his sunscreen adhesive.

Gerrit Cole has a bright future in politics to look forward to after he retires from the game. Dude can spin with the best of them.

For what it's worth, Jeff Passan mentioned today (and with the caveat of whoever knows for sure from a distance):
Quote:
Look, I can’t ever say definitively anyone isn’t using. But the numbers back up what Jacob deGrom’s teammates say: He doesn’t. There’s usually a significant jump in 4-seam spin rate with pitchers who regularly do, and deGrom’s velocity-to-spin ratio is pretty much league average. Jacob deGrom’s year-over-year increase in spin rate corresponds with his gains in velocity. Also ... foreign substances don’t help guys throw harder. They’re used to juice the spin on pitches.
When I posted the charts earlier, that's just the spin rate. I didn't realize there is a correlation between velocity and spin, and apparently that rise in spin just matches (from Passan's knowledge) matches what would be expected with the velocity deGrom has gained.

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realize the correlation either

If anything, the SpiderTack scandal shows that MLB only cares about policing when it suits their purposes, or the media brings it up. Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire should all be in the hall.

Read Ball Four, by Jim Bouton. Clubhouses kept JARS of "greenies" on the table in locker rooms, right next to the potato salad.

These were amphetamines, and that isn't a PED, I don't know what is.

And now Pete Alonso's saying the MLB adjusts the balls each season depending on who will be in the upcoming free agent class - that's a touch *too* conspiracy theory for me...

Might be but why are the balls being adjusted at all? Just go buy a dozen balls and any sports store and play ball.

Pete Alonso is full of ****. There. I said it. The rest of you'all were thinking it, though. Heh heh.

Edit to add..Alonso is born to be a DH. He plays at first, and he's terrible, even there.

To MLB's credit, I don't think that's true.

Not to MLB's credit, I don't think they have a ******* clue what they're doing at all.

OK...average batting average has gone from .236 to .238 in the last ten days.

This is a pretty substantial change, this far into the season. I suspect the average for last ten days is .250 or better.

Better still when the first ten day suspensions are handed out.

deGrom was spot checked by the umpires today who didn't find anything. And another five scoreless innings in the books.

There's actually significant evidence to point towards Alonso being 100% correct here. X-Rays and studies of MLB baseballs have shown significant differences year-over-year in their overall composition. Additionally, when AAA adopted the MLB baseball in 2019, it experienced a significant scoring boost compared to what it had the year before.

Here's an article by fivethirtyeight about the juiced balls: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/juiced-baseballs/
