Older players

it would be nice to see a Few players keep going even tho they are old,

For example, i've got one pitcher, who's won 303 games, he's 38 years old, and has just informed me that he's goign to retire at the emd of the season. However he's still winning 19-20 games a year, he's still 4.5 stars, shows no sign of slowing down.

It seems that none of the older players i have play much past 39-40. when there are several big leaguers now playing into their early-mid 40's (and julio Franco is still playing, and he's 106!)

I don't think I've ever seen a player in OOTP still playing in the bigs past 40. Obviously there will be some players retiring while they're still effective like Roger Clemens, but I think the money for most is incentive enough to stay around a bit longer. I'm sure the OOTP people will swear up and down that this is all modeled accurately according to baseball history though. That said, it doesn't really bother me, I just make personal excuses for the players who do retire probably a bit early.

It's especially odd when a player who is still effective retires at 39 with 2 years left on a big contract.

I can understand if their star rating has dropped to 1, but when i've got a 4.5 star pitcher, who's still going strong...

So what determins when a player retires? LIke i said, i've got a 38 year old pitcher, still 4.5 stars, still winning 19-20 games a season, and yet he's retiring at 38.

No big deal really, i've got some young players i've wanted to bring up, but it just seemed odd. I don't think i've got any players in my league older than 40.

I don't know "for certain" what makes a player decide to retire in the game and don't want to.

I understand not wanting to know why players retire. The obvious advantage, etc., but why couldn't there be a "holds on too long", "have to rip the uniform off me" type of player arc?

An older player not performing will take care of itself, but an older, productive player would probably get a job somewhere (see Julio Franco). Why not just extend the arc to a) finish any contract to which he is signed, regardless of performance, and b) to keep playing as long as he's rated high enough in certain categories?

Well, I'm sure Steinbrenner hates to lose Roger Clemens, and I know that the Cardinals hated to see McGwuire walk away from a lucrative 2-year extension.

At the same time, why is Rickey Henderson still playing? He should be coaching somewhere... he has a lot to teach young basestealers... but I think he fits into the "hanging on too long" category... and I've seen this plenty in OOTP. I had a pitcher who was a 5-star stud at 37... spent 2 weeks on the disabled list in September and by spring training, was a 1.5 star player... oh how the mighty have fallen... I kept him that year... he was in the last year of his contract, he made a decent number 5 starter and his mega contract made him virtually untradable... I really wanted to see him retire with my team, because he had spent his entire career there, and had over 300 wins... but he wanted a new contract for several million and I wasn't about to pay that for a 1.5 star #5 pitcher. He signed elsewhere.

Anyway, my point is, the game DOES have both ends of the spectrum, and while we all hate to lose productive players, it's realistic.

I hate losing 30 year old perennial 20 game winners that I just gave a 7 year contract extension to a career ending injury too... but it's realistic.

I edited a reliever so he was dominant when he turned 35. I kept editting him whenever he lost ratings and he played until I got bored of him.

He played until he was 47.

I for one would like to see star players staying in the game longer and padding their numbers with hangaround time. This would give players a chance to pad some of their career numbers and have more guys approach some of the famous baseball milestones. I'd also like to see more players in their late 30s remain elite players, but that's probably a different discussion.

I think what we need is more Dusty Bakers. Then old players could keep playing despite bad ratings.

In my two leagues. The game killed Clemens by the end of the year. I couldn't even stand to look at it no more.
Wish there was a way to give some of them a chance to pitch untill they are mid 40's. Myabe not dominate like they were 20 but still be effective.

I have played a number of ficitional career out in testing and there was ALOT of research done on this topic when v5 came out and "as a general rule" the players stay in the game and achieve records about on par with what they should and age at a fairly realistic rate. NO, you won't necesarily see "real" players do this cause the game has NO idea who they are.

the only other choice if you feel stronly about it is to simply not let him retire.....there is a utility made by Pierre that you can use to unretire players.
