espn.com:

The union remains steadfast that players should receive their full prorated salaries, while MLB's plan included significant pay cuts that affected the highest paid players the most but covered all levels.

Full pro-rated salaries are not full salaries.

The above link is from the athletic. Here is a quote:

Much of baseball’s revenue is tied up in postseason media deals, and the commissioner’s office is concerned by the possibility that the league might start the regular season but not reach or complete the postseason. If the postseason is canceled, contracts of $10 million or above (before being prorated) could be deferred, according to the union’s proposal. Teams with large payrolls would receive as much as $7 million each in relief under this system.

The part that is concerning to me is how the bulk of the revenue comes from postseason media deals. I think this may be the sticking point that makes the whole thing fail. If the owners think that the postseason won’t happen they aren’t going to agree to a deferment of payment. They won’t want to pay at all. Or they will agree and then find some legal loophole and send it to the courts, keeping the money frozen for years as they sort the mess out. Not to mention that if the bulk of your cash comes from playoff media deals you have a bad system in place to begin with. All that means is that baseball will eventually add more playoff teams permanently which would water down their regular season and reward mediocre teams like the NFL, NHL and NBA does. Sigh. Sports were a lot cooler when I was too young to focus on anything bigger than the simple game itself.

Not sure what youd propose to fix the "bad system". The playoffs are what people care about thus where the media money is coming from. Regular season games are irrelevant and most mean absolutely nothing once you get past May and half the league is tanking. Only gambling degenerates are watching the marlins vs padres. So your goals of "not watering down the regular season" and "increasing regular season revenue" work against each other.

The NFL regular season is perfectly interesting every week. The NBA's problem is that there are maybe 10 players good enough to matter and they all want to play on the same team so you enter the season with less than 5 real contenders.

I don't know what the fix is, but that doesn't mean it isn't still a problem. The way the baseball season is currently constructed you actually have a good number of deserving clubs that qualify and the one game elimination really makes winning your division a priority. As for the NFL, I disagree about it being interesting each week. There are a lot of bad teams and a lot of bad games (especially after week 12) that are simply not interesting unless you are a gambler or playing fantasy football. I much prefer college football who have their own issue with illegal recruiting, but do keep the integrity of their regular season in tact. I don't necessarily disagree with you about the NBA. Although, I don't have a problem with the players taking control of their own careers and working together. I guess we just have a different perspective on things which I can respect.

I'm curious how the 114 games will be scheduled. Because June 30-Oct. 31 is only 124 days. I'm guessing lots of doubleheaders?

Trola,

I'm okay with money upfront and money deferred. Though it's prorated, it at least feels like they'd be getting paid mostly through an entire season.

Quola,

I think the expanded playoffs for two seasons is throwing the owners a bit of a bone. More potential money in more potential coffers.

You have to make the 162 mean something, and those two teams were a joke.

Oh joy. The negotiations following the 2021 season just got more interesting...er...I mean...acrimonious. Please don't be dumb. Make the 162 games mean something. I really like the fact that MLB has the smallest amount of postseason teams, which ensures better teams, and thus better competition. Do. Not. Water. It. Down. Thank you. I'm sure my pleas will fall on deaf ears though because money, above all else, talks.

Meh
Fewer regular season games
More playoffs
More baseball in a shortened season
No biggie

More money for the owners

Makes sense to me

33.3% making it is too much. Be a winner or don't go.

Playoffs are too much. Wasn't the regular season enough to figure out who the best team is?

From Jeff Passan on Twitter:

Major League Baseball intends to propose a shorter season in which they would pay players a full prorated share of their salaries, sources told ESPN. The league believes the late March agreement allows it to set the schedule, and that this would fulfill players’ pro rata desire.

The potential season Major League Baseball envisions would run somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 regular-season games, sources told ESPN. The exact number is being considered, but the aim would be to return in July. It would be less than half of players’ proposed season length.

An important clarification to this news: MLB will continue discussing alternatives to the shorter season with players but believes that its March agreement with players allows it to mandate a shorter season and is prepared to use that option in the absence of a deal with MLBPA.

MLB mulls shorter season, full prorated salaries for players

Though MLB does not intend to propose this to the players, the possibility of implementing a schedule of around 50 games that would start in July has been considered by the league as a last resort in the event the parties can't come to a deal, sources said.

Language in the the March agreement appears to give commissioner Rob Manfred the right to deliver a season schedule after "good faith" discussions between the league and the union.

The league, which has contended it will lose money each game it plays without fans and with players making their full pro rata, has pushed for a shorter season due to fears of a second wave of the coronavirus potentially wiping out its postseason and the revenue that comes with it. The economic feasibility language in the scheduling section also could serve as a rationale from the teams for a shorter season.
