WTF -- Top prospect retires at 22

My St. Louis River Walkers received a shock in the closing days of their 2027 season.
Their top-pitching prospect Jeremy Miller has announced his retirement at the age of 22.
A 32nd-round selection out of high school in the 2024 draft, the 6-foot-2 left-hander had gone 9-2 with a 2.97 ERA in 18 games (16) starts at AAA Memphis.
He also bo\asted a 1.00 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 100 innings.
Miller gave the team no notice of his intention to retire.
He was expected to come to 2028 spring training with a chance to earn a place in the major league starting rotation.

Thems the breaks.

I think there's an option to unretire a player if you want.

Nah, I won't do that.

Although they say you never have enough pitching, and it's absolutely true, if there is any part of my putrid minor league system that I have depth it is in starting pitching.
Just a shock, as with my 2027 seasons winding down -- I just was eliminated from playoff contention with four days to go -- I was beginning to look at the roster for 2028, and Miller definitely part of the plan.

Do you have storylines on? I know there's a few different retirement storylines.

I don't think OOTP has players ever die at any age, but in real life you see an MLB player go every couple years or so. Are shocking early "retirements" built into the game to represent this?

5 over the last 9 years, and that's just counting MLB and not the minors:

There are also rare cases of players retiring for reasons other than death. The first guy who comes to mind is Robin Yount, although he came back. Danny Ainge, of course, quit to play in the NBA. There was a guy in the 50s who was afraid of flying.

I do think that they make a point to make them non-fatal because a. players can unretire but the game doesn’t have a “dead so don’t ever come back” flag, and b. I think you’re right, it would be awkward and weird to have a storyline where Clayton Kershaw tries to take over a plane mid-flight and gets his head crushed in by a fire extinguisher.

I dislike the storyline mechanic because it isn't interactive with us the human player. It just dictates to us what happens but doesn't involve us at all. Maybe we get to give a fine or suspension after the fact.

Plus the charity story lowers your market size. That is completely broke. Just turn them off. Awful..

I had Trevor Stephen quit to pursue a career in the NFL. The game said he was a late-first or second round defensive end prospect. Google him and it looks like he's got a long winter of tire flipping before the combine

In a historic replay...I drafted a 19 yr old Babe Ruth. I sent him to AAA to learn first base and at seasons end he retired. It was crushing.

Red Sox outfielder Jackie Jensen retired at the end of the 1959 season because of his pathological fear of flying. He tried to come back in 1961, but the problem persisted. He gave up and retired for good. One of the factoids that flashes by while OOTP is loading mentions him.

Yeah, that's the guy. I was confusing him with Harry "The Golden Greek" Agganis, who died of a pulmonary embolism early in his second season, and just couldn't think of Jensen at all...

You can also disable storylines at Game Settings > Global Settings > Storylines. Some want the full experience and the challenge. I'm just here for the baseball. YMMV

Meanwhile, in my universe, some guys just don't know when to hang it up. Justin Verlander is struggling in A+ ball on a minor league contract at age 38 after getting released from the Astros! Dude, you've made your millions, go home to Kate Upton!

Yount couldn't have retired could he? He played twenty straight seasons from age 18 through age 37, and from 19 through 37 he qualified for the batting title every season.

Was the guy in the 1950s Jim Piersall, or was that just a mental illness thing (not minimizing mental illness, more tacking it on to the fear of flying thing)? Ah...Jackie Jensen is probably the guy you're thinking of. Being afraid of flying is not conducive to being a professional athlete at all. Other athletes in this category include Wayne Gretzky, Cortland Finnegan, James Harrison, Royce White, and Dustin Pedroia. It must be terrible to have to fly that often with time changes and at weird hours, on top of the anxiety. *Shudders*

You must've missed the other storyline. She took up with Jose Altuve. Justin was crushed, and his anchor in life became his baseball career. He descended into depression and substance abuse. Very sad story. Surprised you missed it.

Beat me to it by three hours. The lesson here is that you should always look downthread before trying to look like a smarty pants kids.
