Stretch out SP after DL stint?

In a 1st year online league I have Ryu coming back from a 3 month DL stint. Should you give him a pitch count in his first start?

The common belief is that it's best to let players rehab in the minors after a long injury.

But that belief is not universal.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=256171

The manual says this
Quote:
Pitcher injury chance is influenced by the following factors:
Rust (i.e. after an injury or at the start of spring training
So, it appears there is some benefit to building a pitcher back up after an injury

rehab assignment

I think the 2 big things are they get rust like it was the offseason. I forget exactly but think they need 1-2 weeks being on some active roster. They dont even need to play just being on the active roster gets rid of the rust.

Other thing is if its a major injury and they go right to mlb then injury recurrence is an issue. Not sure how long they technically need. If its a year injury they might need 2 months in the minors if your pro roster is good.

This 3 month injury you probably want to get in 3 starts in the minors to see how he does. If he is aces 1st and 2nd start then bring him up. If he struggles give it the 3rd start until his stat line is about the same as before he went down.

I believe they do need actual playing time. Not much, but a little. One or two 3 inning stints (if a guy is a starter) ought to be enough.

What is the prevailing thought if you do not use Minor Leagues, but only use a reserve roster? They do not play games in reserve, so how would you get the rehab work?^

You wouldn't. Put them on active roster and bench them I guess.

Or at that point just turn injuries off. No minors then injuries don't make that much sense I suppose.

I’m pretty sure that players on your reserve roster a. do not accumulate rust, and b. work it off the same as if you gave them a rehab stint.

Yeah, I'd have to say that I have not seen any evidence of rust or more prone to re-injury after a DL stint. I was just curious as I play almost all fictional leagues, and don't use the Minors, but thought that the rehab stuff would be interesting. Maybe I'll add a minor league to my ficitonal world and see how it goes.

Thanks for the responses!!

David

I see your point, but for me it still makes sense to have injuries. I play as GM only, so I like to put guys on the DL to bring up a guy off the reserve roster to see what he can do. Think of it like doing an evaluation of talent that you can only get in spring training otherwise.
