The Yankees are the UPS of baseball in NY while the Mets are FedEx. The Yankees are McDonald's, Coke, Heinz, Marlboro. While the Mets are Burger King, Pepsi, Hunts, and Winston. After a tense first few games, and much like smothering a quadriplegic, the Mets didn't put up much of a fight. I'm glad that was finally put to rest. |

Let's not forget Al Gionfriddo's catch off DiMaggio. Many writers and players say it was the only time DiMaggio ever showed emotion on the field.

It would have been a true gem if he had thrown the man out at the plate.

That knocks out HRs except maybe some out of the entire park shot (contender but not winner) because within broad categories the flight of a HR ball isn't recognizably unique. Some tower, some are liners, some are reasonably high and crawl over the fence but in the big picture there's nothing unique. Pretty much the same with a pitch. Some are really pretty, some aren't, but a lot of the beauty of a successful pitch is the batters reaction to the ball which since we're counting this as a pitcher's play makes the batter not the one doing the great play. Gotta be a fielding play. Probably some kind of infield play. An outfield catch alone wouldn't do it no matter how spectacular... unless he then threw someone out with a magnificent throw. Back on the first thread on this by the flag waver, I posted Maz hitting into a triple play in the movie The Odd Couple because it wasn't a real play and neither was that OP's nomination. But maybe there's a slick triple play. The one with Neil Walker and Jung Ho Kang doesn't make it because Kang hesitated and didn't realize what he had. |

A great play is great on its own merits, not on its context. Put in context and you could argue for the pitch that created a pop up by a .220 hitter for the last out in a seventh game world series no hitter as the greatest.

A homer can't be the greatest baseball play ever, because by definition the ball isn't even *in play*.
... ...unless it bounces off Jose Canseco's thick head and over the fence.

You guys are putting too much thought into what "play" is.

Sure, a homerun is a play all by itself. I agree that they aren’t necessarily exciting. People can hit a ball off of a stick very far. We’ve known this for a while. Sometimes when the ball gets hit especially far (like Cecil Fielder’s HR over the roof at Tigers Stadium in 1990) or in a clutch situation (the Shot Heard Round the World) it can be a great play, sure, but by themselves they really aren’t.

This could be something that devolves into splitting hairs. But I have to agree. There are tremendous moments that aren't great plays. That's not downplaying a Gibson or Carter home run, these are literally life altering events for fans.
I cry every time I watch the end of game six Mets/Boston. Hell, I'm tearing up a little right now just typing about it! A great play to me is something where it's easy to see the skill and awareness of a player who's put into an impossible, split-second situation and then astoundingly they just do everything 100% correct.

Not the greatest, but...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF0FCsWcuy4
Earliest play in my lifetime I can remember watching live from the 1970 World Series. And I distinctly remember at age 5 noticing something that Curt Gowdy did not on the telecast: Elrod Hendricks doesn't have the ball in his glove when he tags Bernie Carbo. Two replays and he never points it out. This play had a bit of everything what with the umpire Ken Burkhart being knocked over, and as Sports Illustrated showed with their photos later: Carbo never touched the plate. Also does my heart good to see Sparky Anderson coming out and arguing the call. Actually in the highlight film here: at 5:45, they use some still photos, player interviews and more replays to explain all of this - and yes, Curt Gowdy is the same guy doing the narration. http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWhTXNUV-QQ Last edited by Robby The Z; 05-04-2020 at 08:20 PM. |
