Just Pulled All-Star Willie Mays - now what?

On my second account that I am only getting cards through packs I pulled a perfect card the 1954 All-Star Willie Mays. I checked the auction house and the last five cards sold for 160,000 points which would be a lot of new packs to open if I choose that path.

So, this team is currently in Bronze and is quite terrible so the question is do I build around Willie or sell to really give myself a chance to stock up the team?

Only you can answer that but were it me I'd likely sell him and use the AH house to construct a fairly formidable team.

but if you're going to stick with a pack-only approach for that team, you also risk getting a whole lot of nothing even with that many packs.... tough call.

So I did the screenshot, then checked roster and hit submit before I posted!

Then I gave my dog a huge hug and let out a good yell that may have contained an a few words my mother would not approve of.

if you sell him I would spend at least some in the AH just to make sure you get some good upgrades, I have been on a streak of about 150 packs with no diamonds a few good gold though

If your whole premise is just to build solely through opening packs, then immediately sell him and open 160 packs. You will have a much better team than if you keep willie and try to slowly build around the card.

If you want to break for your pack option, and actually buy players off the AH - immediately sell willie and buy really good players on the AH and you will have a drastically better team than you have now and more than likely better than opening 160k packs.

Or, you can keep willie, open packs at a presumably slow clip since you said your team isnt not too great - and eventually if you are lucky have a good team in a few months that actually has willie in it.

Those seem like your three options, or a combo or 1 and 2 would work as well.

I personally would definitely sell the card if i just started a team. If you already had a good team, might be neat to keep the card but based on what you said that is not the case.

With Mays, Maglie, and Cueto in just that pack, you've got a good start on a Giants theme team.

How many teams get to enjoy watching a perfect Willie Mays?

I'm going to go the other way and say you should keep him. There are enough quality players that are going for pretty cheap on the AH. Make a list, spend the next x amount of PP that you earn targeting them. You may struggle a year or two while you are building the team, but you should be able to build a respectable team pretty quick around Mays. Then go back to opening packs.

I am leaning towards this because it is just neat and I'm doing this for fun and need to remind myself of that sometimes.

I also think this. At this point for my teams, I would rather have a card I could never afford than to sell him and buy Sale, deGrom, Betts and Trout.

My two big pack pulls have been 92OVR Yogi Berra and 96OVR Ron Santo, both of which I don't often see in the AH. I kept them because they're kinda cool to have, and I've built my team around them.

My vote is keep Mays and build around him. He'll help increase your PP earnings and, well, it's Willie Mays!

Keep him. I packed the 97OVR Top WAR Mays a while ago and just get so much pleasure from seeing him on my team whenever I look.

I would keep Mays. Just to have him on my team would be worth it, unless it's the 1973 card.

If you're in Bronze still, that Mays should get you some pretty hefty points for quite awhile in league. I had the 100 Williams the first two seasons and he won MVP both years, multiple silver achievements every year on top of that, along with numerous smaller PP's.

Sold him and have a "whale" team now and it earns almost nothing, comparatively, at the Perfect level.

One big hitter/pitcher won't win you a season, but it will earn you a lot of PP when player against inferior players.

Yeah, do 50.packs or something and reassess. You might have built a pretty solid team at that point and then buy some 10-20k guys where you have holes.

Why not both? Play him for as long as you want as you build up and when the time is right, sell him!

And when asking about advice for a Willie Mays card you should always give heavy consideration from a guy named "Say Hey"......

I would play Willie Mays with a roster of 40's before I'd sell him. If you spurn this gift of the Pack Gods, you're karma is doomed. Best player I ever saw. Search YouTube for video of him and you'll agree.

He's been alright

So I took the advice to put him in the lineup and see what happens...

In the last 13 games of the season I went on an 11 game winning streak - good for 175 PP achievement, and actually made the Wild Card which was good for another 1,000 PP. I had basically written this team off for this season and was hoping to retool in the off-season but they surprised me and ended up winning over 90 games.

As you can see, he did alright in his 13 game stint.
