if your overall performance is above expectation, offense or defense, then expect a fall off on that record.

collecting pieces is important, but so is timing of when you get them. sometimes waiting for the minors to get stocked a bit before spending like a drunken sailor in FA is a good idea (speaking of long-term expensive players only).

I've rebuilt the Padres in 2 leagues with pretty quick success. Their budget sucks, but some good trade bait and decent prospects allowed me to improve quickly. The A's were the hardest for me. The budget is terrible and the owner is a penny pincher. Even with success, I barely got a bump in the budget. Ultimately, I had to move the team to a better market and also got lucky when the owner died. His son cranked up the budget quickly and my new stadium had a much higher capacity.

You guys might laugh, but the Yankees are also a pain in the butt. Those awful contracts kill the team and a lack of prospects provide no future and nothing to trade with. You're basically stuck with the crap roster you're given until contracts start to expire or people retire.

You're right about the Yankees. The lack of anything in the minors hurts just as bad as anything Cashman has done in FA.

Padres....I'm half way through year five and currently have a winning percentage of around .510 as a GM. My previous year ended with exactly .500, by far the best I completed.

I find it virtually impossible to achieve ANY of the owner's goals and find it a miracle that I still have a job with them! Even if I did manage to achieve any of them, I think it would have been counter productive towards future success, especially when asked to extend contract(s).

Yep, the owner has a virtual playground with 'yours truly' GM. And his 'review of goals' emails are really frosting my shorts.

GREAT THREAD!!!

Just an update with my progress with the Padres. Years 6 and 7 have been completed and my club had been eliminated both times in the playoffs. I have (HAD) a great team as it lead in many a category. I have (HAD) a an outstanding personnel field as well. It is the owner I am (WAS) upset with.

I am tired (WAS) of his sissy emails and his stupid goals. First day of the off season....time to pull off some mischief. Fired ALL my staff. Released ALL my 40 man roster AND prospects. Dropped ticket prices to 50 cents. Wrote a nice article about the owner in the 'League Newspaper' and asked him if we were 'even' now and if he wouldn't mind being a positive reference in my upcoming resume while he finds his own homegrown player and resets the budget. My next big move is to quit the team but I still have some odds and ends to do before I hit the 'Finish Today' prompt. Or perhaps I will change my settings to 'can't get fired', or go into Commissioner Mode and relocate to Granville, North Dakota. If the status of the owner is 'worried' now just wait until I'm done with him. So many options available to me, what a great game this is!!

I feel better.

I actually made it to the world series in year 4 of my padres save led by Wil Myers.

We were swept, Myers refused to resign with us cause he clashed with my manager. I showed loyalty to my manager and myers walked.

We sucked again for awhile, I got sacked.

Screw you, Wil Myers

You really did well!! Working for that owner is a real prize in itself, lol.
