I think I overdid the "platooning" thingy.

A little background here, I have only one healthy RHB outfielder and I'm facing a LHP. One of my first basemen can play LF but not RF, the other can play RF but not LF, and both are right-handed batters.

I have the ingenious idea to switch around the 1Bs/outfielders depending on the handedness of the opposing hitter. Spoiler alert: It doesn't work.

So what were you doing, putting your best fielders on each batter's pull-side?

Even if it did work, that looks like waaaay too much work, mentally and physically, to get me to even bother - I am quite happy spamming Enter 100 times per game.

The Blue Jays did that to Cecil Fielder one time in 1988. They had him at 2nd base, but (surprise) he couldn't really play that position. So they swapped him over to 3rd base every time there was a lefty hitter at the plate. The Blue Jays lost that game and I don't think they ever tried it again. (Call me crazy, but maybe the Jays should have tried out Fielder as their full-time DH instead of Juan Beniquez ) I've considered this strategy in OOTP but I definitely don't have the patience for it.

I think the Mets also did that once with a left-fielder and pitcher, but I don't recall the game anymore.

I feel like that was in '86 or so in an extra inning game when they were out of position players, but I can't find the game somehow.

I think what you did was a logical strategy that has no ingame reason not to work, and you lost despite, not because of that strategy.
IRL, I think it is possible with RF and LF, however mixing 1B in it...it's one thing catching flies in another part of the stadium, however rapidly switching between infield and outfield, well...you'd need to often change gloves at the very least. And performance might suffer.

Actually, it was TWO pitchers Westheim.
Roger McDowell AND Jesse Orosco had to go to the outfield.
The famous Mets-Reds BaseBrawl game.
How could you forget THAT game in 1986?

In case anyone missed it, there was a repeat of this strategy on June 28 during a 15-inning game between the Cubs and Reds. Chicago used 3 different pitchers in left field, and they sort of broke baseball-reference's winning pitcher display:

I sometimes wonder why (NL) teams don't go with a R/L starting tandem...sure, your bottom of the lineup will be a black hole, but you'll always pitch with the platoon advantage, while 1-7 can still produce normally.

I suppose that's an acceptable excuse.

the Mets also did it with Rusty Staub . moving him to the opposite field OF position. he ended up making a running catch on the left field line to save the game. Actually running is a figure of speech.
