OOTP Community Hub

some may remember a few weeks or maybe it was a couple months ago, anyway.. I rebranded the ootpwiki and ootpmods website into the ootp community hub but I had no plans to change or add domains? it turns out I was only partially correct, I hand no plans.... but it is clear that the branding is clumsy and difficult to promote. so ....

what I did was

invested in www.ootphub.com

no function changes, ootpmods.com & ootpwiki.info still go to the same website, ootpmods add-ons will still work. All the domains do the same thing.

ootphub.com is just much more reflective of the goals of the site and it's much easier to promote as ootphub.com or ootphub.com, home of ootpmods over the split personality, half this/half that I had been attempting to do. It's far better to do it now than wait any longer, in truth I should have done it 2 months or whatever it was ago.

I expect the ootpwiki.info name to fall out of use fairly quickly. ootpmods.com has strong legacy and name recognition value, so that may never really fall out of use.

1 more thing. I spent much of my ootp time this past year getting the website functional, I barely had a chance to play ootp16. I would like that to change a bit. some of that has sort of taken care of its self, many of the technical issues I was dealing are now taken care of and I can spend my time on more visible aspects of the site.

I am not complaining, it is what I signed up for and an happy to do it. But eh website is founded on Wiki principals, it will function best the more the community participates. Conceptually I can really only provide & maintain the foundation, it is up to the community to do the work of evolving.

in some form or another I put in on the short side of 4 hours a week into the site. If 15 community members donated just 1 hour of their time, or 30 just 30 minutes, per month into the site in some fashion, that would just about double the time spent. How much improvement could be made in a relatively short period of time?

and what if a few community members came together and formed a formal or even an informal leadership council, board of directors, or whatever, and gave the site more direction and stability than one person could ever hope to do?

but maybe these are arguments for another day, for today

The website is now branded OOTP Community Hub - Home of OOTPmods.com and www.ootphub.com is the domain I will be referencing and promoting for the ootpmods & wiki site for the future, but please remember, functionally nothing changes old domains will work just as well as the new one

I made videos to show how easy it is

the server is being hit really hard right now, if I didn't know better I would be worried about a dos attack. if downloads and the website are slow or unreliable, I can only ask for patience

that's a good question, and there are 2 vastly different answers.

the simple answer is... anything somebody's time, talents and desires would like done.

in it's most basic and practical form one could create or take "ownership" of a page (say the knowledge page), update it and remind the community it exists on a semi-regular basis.

Cross post a dynasty to the blog.

create and maintain a page for your online league, post champions & a wall of fame (I am not throwing stones here, I am way behind in updating the one for mine .

I am not a delicate flower, I can take constructive criticism. and I also know that the navigation is ... unattractive and clunky. active participation in the discussion about what works, what doesn't & maybe some ideas on how to fix it. we can even do that right here

say average just 10 minutes a month, if 10 people did just one of those each it would be far more than I can do on my own

I am also at the point where I can host an online league project or 2 (I am working on one sponsored by the site, that's what the AI name thread is about)

the second answer is a bit more conceptual and complicated. I need to think about how I want to approach it... but I do want to remind everyone, this was designed, from the ground up, to be a community focused website. up to this point I have been focused on function. We are now at the point where we can begin to focus on form. we can start to smooth over edges and figure out where we go from here. I would prefer to facilitate and support rather than dictate. I am under no illusions that I know better than a random selection of this community.

I need to think about that answer some more, but you can see the direction

How do you sign up on the site? I can see a login but don't know how or where to go to create a user name and password.

OK now I am registered and willing to help out, I am not that computer literate but would do tasks that you think would help the site.

I prefer to think of myself as a facilitator rather than a dictator, so how about we start with getting a list together of things that need worked on or polished up.

things like making the registration button more obvious. what info do we want on the from page. ideas for improving navigation.

when I get a chance i'll set up a spreadsheet and an issues forum & we can see if that helps as well

I tried to access the URL. My work computer flagged it with this message.
"Internet Access Restricted! This site has been known to be leveraged by malicious actors trying to gain access to people’s systems".
The site is probably safe, but without access, I can't help.

I just registered (the captcha was hard, I had to refresh it 3 times before I could get one I could read) and I'm willing to contribute, but I'll need direction as I have no idea what needs work. So that spreadsheet would be useful.

I don't think I ever told you, but I'm really thankful you took on the mods site. I very rarely use it myself, but I know how it important it is for some so I'm glad that someone like you who's so well known and consistent here took it on. Thank you.

You know one thing that I keep thinking would be great for the community that might be great on your site would be a web database of OOTP ideas/requests where people could rate the different ideas, comment on them, add them to their favorites lists, maybe rank them on their own top 10 lists, and then we could sort all the ideas by rating, how many people want them, etc. Like some of those font websites that are out there. I forget his name (he had a green avatar and something about a "dragon"; edit: it was Raidergoo), but there was a guy years ago who collected the ideas people posted and then gave them to Markus or somebody. I asked him about it once, but he said he didn't have it anymore or that I had to ask Markus for it, I forget. I've been thinking about it off and on for years now, but I just can't commit the hours to coding it from scratch like I did with the IOLD. But maybe you know of some framework that would make it far easier to build it from? I don't know, just an idea.

thanks for letting me know, the site has a scanner & I don't see any unusual activity so I assume your work network doesn't like one of the scripts (probably flash) that helps the site be interactive. I'll run a deep scan tonight just to be safe, far better safe than sorry.

and I think the software the site runs on is moving away from flash in the next version update. It's in beta now so I don't want to upgrade the live site. I'll start testing it on my personal site fairly soon so we can upgrade soon after its release.

thanks for the kind words, I hosted the back-end of the mods sites for quite some time before ootpmods came around, so I figure the mods just came back home.

the site has a built-in system called trackers,

https://doc.tiki.org/tiki-index.php?...light=trackers

Quote:
Using Trackers, you can create forms for collecting data and make reports from that data. Trackers can combine structured information collected from users; the feature is a powerful, flexible tool. Originally, trackers were used to collect and manage bugs. They evolved into an open-ended system where you can track any kind of user input in a customizable form. Each tracker has its own mini database. Trackers operate as a standalone feature, and can be fully integrated within wiki pages. Users with the appropriate permissions can devise trackers to collect any kind of information they want. Combining trackers and the wiki makes Tiki a Structured Wiki.

Think of Tiki Trackers as a web-based version of Microsoft Access or FileMaker Pro.

Trackers can:
• be used to collect additional data from users upon registration.
• be used like a customizable articles feature with admin definable forms
• assist workflows by tracking tasks.
• act as expanded polls, surveys or quizzes
• import and export their settings and data.
• edit tracker items inline from full (or partially filtered) item lists
• Have customized templates to submit and display your information with a Pretty Tracker

Trackers can't yet: (but it improves with each version)
• do extensive calculations - the calculations are limited. For advanced calculations, use the Spreadsheet. Tighter integration between trackers and the spreadsheet is under development.
but it always confused me and I had bigger fish to fry so I spent my time elsewhere, but i think they are a theoretically easy way to set up mini databases.

i'll grant you elevated access.

and the site does have a user generated directory, a simple form of the IOLD can be done by the community at large.

I have a suggestion. Please add a folder in the graphics section for jerseys, caps and logos. I did find some files I uploaded but they are in the legacy folders and may be difficult to locate.
