Are Player deaths going to be added?
Markus announced here on the 16 forums that player deaths would be added. To me it was a huge selling point. It is completely immersion-breaking that players live forever. It's not realistic. Quite frankly, it's dumb that players live forever.
So, I saw in another thread on the 17 forums that Markus had backpedaled to a "maybe-maybe not". So does maybe mean no or does maybe mean yes?

i think it would be great for games that last several decades. The occasional star's passing would highlight his career again for a day.

That's the thing I've always found weird about OOTP's death policy. Why is it okay for owners to die, but nobody else? Is it just because, as a rule, nobody likes owners, with a few exceptions (Bill Veeck comes to mind)? Whatever the reason, it seems a weird inconsistency. Either allow player deaths, or stop owners from dying.
Either way, it should be something you can turn on or off. For instance, in pure historicals, you wouldn't want anybody to die before they actually do. It's something for the development team to think about, anyway. |

If they're in, it will be through storylines (same as forced retirements) and may end up disabled in MLB games because of licensing requirements.

That said it doesn't bother me that players live forever, I've taken it on as just one of a number of things I sort of look past as not game breaking and hope it will be added or fixed in a future release ![]() |

I would like to see this feature as well, actually. It seems only natural to include it for retired players at least, because they aren't going to live forever. But having it happen once in a while (during fictional games anyway) as a storyline, like with owners, would be cool.

I remember in previous versions trying to edit the injuries.txt file to produce CEI with player deaths from stuff like accidents, violence, illness, etc. Rare, but it does happen IRL.
Death should be in the game for YOUNG players. It certainly should be in there for elderly ex-players. Want the game to realistic, true to life? Death is part of life.

I definitely feel it should be added for realism. I agree with a previous point that it would create a reason to highlight and celebrate the career of past players.

It would be a nice element, but we still have our imaginations right?

Well, his ballclubs were usually not very good, but he didn't skew everything towards deep-pocketed fans like most owners do today, so in retrospect, he looks pretty good by comparison.

Nope, will not happen in OOTP 17. This is more complicated that I thought.

I realize this isn't actually a player death in-game, but last night I was playing through my fictional league in OOTP 16 and had a league news story come up that a player's wife had died suddenly, and he was going to be out for a month for bereavement. The player was actually a top starting pitcher on a team in contention for the playoffs. And I just had to pause and take a moment, and say DAMN, that's some hard core immersion, right there.
I don't remember ever coming across that story line, before. And have never even considered actual player deaths being in game. But it's still amazing how much immersion those types of storylines add to the whole experience. |

It would be quite immersive seeing HOF pass away with a news story of their career. Then that gives you pause to look through their great careers like you do in those scenarios in real life.

Though the topic is morbid it would make playing a fantasy league through wartime more realistic.
