How to stop the message "This website uses cookies..."
How do I turn off the message "This website uses cookies to ensure...." message that appears each time I visit this site? It is extremely annoying and serves no purpose because I do have cookies enabled for this site. Clicking the "Got It" button simple removes it until I visit the site at a later time.
Please OOTP, remove this message. It is worse than the advertising popups that were all over the web in the past. Thanks. Tim B. |

Tim, I don't mean to answer your question authoritatively because somebody from OOTPD should do so. I can only tell you that, from my experience, clicking "Got it" on both computers that I use worked and I never saw the message again.
My response, I believe, is stored in the cookies that they are talking about. Hence, if I do not delete those cookie files, then I don't have to worry. It so happens that I use CCleaner and in that program is an applet that allows you to designate which cookies to keep even when one uses CCleaner to clean stuff out of your computer. OOTPD cookie files are on that list. All of this leads me to ask whether you have something set, perhaps in your Internet browser program or maybe a program like CCleaner working on schedule, that is deleting your cookies when you close the browser or at a certain scheduled time? That might be the issue and solution.

Bru,
I also use CC Cleaner and after posting, found that I could do just what you indicated and did. I still don't think I should have to save the cookies and the popup should be removed. It should not be necessary to be reminded a site uses cookies in the 21st century. They have existed almost since the beginning of the modern web. Thanks, Tim |

I agree, it's bizarre to get that message in this day and age, but I've only gotten it once here and that was it. I wonder if it's a vbulletin thing or something because I've seen similar messages recently on other sites.

Congrats that you've only gotten it once here. I get that annoying message every time I close my browser (Mozilla Firefox) and re-open it and return to OOTP. However, it's not just limited to OOTP's site that I get that same message.

Bowtie, I use Firefox. Do you have this box checked in your Options? Or, if you don't, you could use Exceptions to accept just OOTPD cookies. EDIT: You need to change the "History - Firefox will" box from "Remember history" to "Use custom settings for history" to see this option.

I get them these types of warnings all over, not just here. They seem worst at sites that have to abide by EU regulations, such as the BBC, FT, and Politico.eu. I know my corporation's EU website has this sort of nagging alert. I will go ask someone on the web team as to why.

After speaking to a member of our website team, he referred me to this:

I have to admit, the message says the cookies provide the best experience on the website, but the message itself contradicts that statement because it annoyingly pops up every time I visit this site. So I've been reducing my visits. Customer service is the name of the game so don't irate customers with popups messages, they died a long time ago.
Since I'm not in the EU, please add some logic to your site to detect the location of your users and only annoy the customers indicated by your government regulations. Tim Last edited by malor; 03-03-2016 at 10:56 PM. Reason: grammer edit |

If you have any maintenance program that cleans junk files/cookies/security/internet traces etc....It may be the culprit for anyone having this issue.
