Bad Contracts
If I have a horrible contract on the books for the long-haul wouldn't I be better off just releasing him and taking the cap hit for a single season?

Depends on 1) your cap situation 2) your team situation 3) your league cap's and so forth. Hard to say in most cases without those variables. And even then, it's a personal decision based on how you manage a club. For me? I'd rather have spending flexibility, but if it's a crap year and I know we'll get it back next year then yeah I'd rather get the shock over with and be done with it.
I personally almost always try to move toxic assets earlier in the deal rather than later for that reason when possible. I rarely release bad deals tho unless it's compelling.

Let's say I'll have 40M plus next yr, am having a bad yr due to injuries but expect to be better next yr, and the lg has no cap. If I cut a player that is due 100M over the next 5 yrs how would my current and future finances be affected?

It depends on how much cash you have now. It could put you so far in the hole that you cannot sign free agents.
$100 mil due -$40 mil projected surplus = You have to eat $60 million somehow, not budget space, cash.
