To promote or not to promote...opinions?
I started a 2014 regular season with the MLB's Minnesota Twins. We're the worst team in the league. It's early June and #3 MLB prospect and my #2 prospect Miguel Sano is destroying AAA and my scout is telling me he's ready to be called up. I'm having serious reservations based on his contact rating and lack of ability to avoid striking out (2nd in the AAA International league in strikeouts) . I'm hoping to leave him down there at least until September for call ups and start him off full time in 2015 pending Spring Training but if he's knocking down the door now, I may not have a choice. He leads the International League with 25 home runs (2nd place has 17). He's in the top-ten in EVERY AAA stat category except doubles and triples.
What are your thoughts?

It's hard to be patient, but unless you see a tangible benefit to bring him up, more time can never hurt, especially at 21

25 bombs in just 61 games sure is tempting, and despite his strikeouts he is still OBP'ing .400, but yes, i agree with Monsieur Walcott.
The Twins arent going to contend this year anyway so let him tear AAA up all year, finish with 50 homers and a 10 WAR, then let him go come Spring 2015 and watch him fly, the extra time will only serve his development well in terms of improving his ratings that need it such as contact and avoiding k's. |

I'd wait to give him a September call-up. You don't have to worry about conserving his option years or anything, so might as well get him some more development time and a little major league experience at the end of the season.

Preserve his service time. Let him start next season.

Give him a chance to set some career records! Bring him up now!
That is my general philosophy on callups. 24 year old Rookies rarely set any records. That being said, I don't like guys that strike out a ton and he's going to strike out a TON..... Personally, I would leave him in AAA and start looking for a sweet trade..... |

If he can help you now, call him up. He's always going to strike out a lot, based on his potential Avoid K rating, so that's not going to significantly improve with time at Triple-A. Preserving service time isn't a big deal because you should be far enough into the season that he won't be a "Super 2" guy.

with his playing expectation to be"playing in majors" id watch as well for him to get unhappy that you are leaving him in the minors

From a gamey standpoint (which, one should add, real life teams are beginning to do as well) the best time to call him up is just after you pass the point that he can't count the season as a full year for arbitration / free agency eligibility purposes. Usually that means keeping him in the minor leagues until May. That means, I realize, that I'm advocating a *later* debut time than anybody else, but, well, it's all about keeping him on your team for the largest number of productive years, right?
In OOTP terms, you *can* run the risk of impeding a player's development by leaving them at a too-low level for too long, but a. it's not that big of a risk, and b. judging by the way the dude's raking in AAA he probably doesn't have much room to grow anyway. Otherwise, the biggest risk is that he'll get hurt or suffer a talent bump while in the minors. This, of course, could happen just as easily in the big leagues as well, but at least you had that sweet little run with him. Nevertheless, I don't think that planning around a low-chance worst-case scenario is the best way to GM, so I stick with the idea to hold him down until next May.

from the standpoint of your losing record this be a great time to give him playing time in the bigs and you lose nothing at this point

I don't see a reason not to call him up now unless your team is loaded and you can't find a spot for him. Judging by your record, that shouldn't be an issue though. You're already far enough into the season to where you won't lose a year of control down the road.

It's nice to see that Miguel has recoverd so quickly from his elbow injury. I plan on having him have a similar recovery when I start my Twins game. As long as he's past the super two level, I'd bring him up. I think you're rigth near the borderline of making super two so I would wait a couple weeks to be safe. In my Twins game, I plan to bring him and Buxton up as soon as possible to see what they can do over a long career.

If you don't like his contact rating and strikeout rating now, it doesn't appear like it's going to change much for the better regardless of raking in AAA or getting big league swings. He's the #3 prospect.. make a trade for an equally big prospect with a skill set more aligned with your team.
