Curse you storylines!!
So, after reading the forums I took the plunge a few weeks ago and bought OOTP 14 as my first entry into this genre. I tried to take as many lessons learned and I decided to leave storylines on as an option.
It is July 22 in my first year with the Pirates and I get this lovely email: "This is not how J.P. Crawford wanted his career to end -- with an injury. He wanted to go out on his terms. Instead, a concussion has forced him to retire from baseball. The Bradenton shortstop plans to meet with the media later this afternoon. In the meantime, he released a brief statement, in which he acknowledged the support of "the organization, the training staff, my teammates, and all the fans." "So far this year, Crawford is batting .289 with 1 home run and 12 RBIs." This was my first round draft pick, with a potential of 72 and a $2 million dollar bonus. Do I get any of the money back or am I just S.O.L.? Also, is there anyway to reverse this or keep it from happening again without having to restart my league?

You are out of luck in terms of money. You can't really reverse it without starting the league over or restoring from backup - you may want to turn storylines off next time!

![]() But seriously, if your game is still running, don't exit. Hit ctrl/alt/del and go to task manager and exit the game from there. The database will have to be cleaned up by the game, which will take a little while, but it will work (kudos to Markus for a rock solid game). Then, turn story lines off. All your game transactions since your last start will be undone. |

Thanks for the quick responses, I am going to give those options a chance...and change my settings.

@pgjocki: Did the injury occur in-game? Did you see a injury popup? |

On a separate note, definitely stash Crawford for at least two years or so before calling him up. A rookie playing the month after he's drafted is unheard of.

That sounds like an email you get when an injury worsens, not a storyline-related item. But even if it IS a storyline, I'm still not seeing the problem. People moan all the time about how horrible storylines are, simply because they get a bad one and lose a player or something. Isn't that the POINT of having storylines on in the first place? He was probably in the minors. I'm pretty sure you get that message even if the affected player is in the minors.

To answer the questions:
All I know is that he suffered a concussion, I don't know if it happened in a game or not. He was playing in the Rookie League as I figured new players would need a season at Rookie League, single A and double A before being called up.

You just fell victim to some horrible, horrible, luck; it had nothing to do with storylines. |

He's not out of luck in terms of money. When the player retires the contract expires, he does not pay the full amount out. That would only happen if he releases him.

Everything Fyrestorm and Deja Bru say above is correct. Nothing whatsoever to do with storylines. And you can unretire players if you just go to Manager Options from your Manager menu, turn on 'Commissioner Mode', then go to the player's profile and click on the Action menu button at the bottom. When you unretire a guy, he'll be a free agent, but you can then either sign him again, or go into the Editor tab in his Profile and, in the lefthand pane, assign him back to a minor league team in your organization.

Turn off storylines anyway.

You may have had him shortlisted, which explains the email.
