An Online League Idea

Since I am no longer involved with running an online league, I think it might be a good idea if I should contribute to the OOTP Online League community.

I believe a lot of you have seen websites that lists a bunch of league websites. Well, I have a well, better idea. I have the idea of creating a network of online leagues of all sorts, for recruting purposes, to put your name out there to the public, or for the sake of having it on a public website. There will be seperate websites for the leagues to post the league's information (League name, type of league, how long the league has been running, so on and so forth...) Also, there will be a Owners section for general managers who are looking for a league to join, to put their name on the website, in hopes that leagues will contact he/she about a league he/she may want to join. There will be seperate websites for each GM with their information (Name, Age, e-mail address, experience, yada yada...)

I am posting this because I want to try to gain enough support for me to get this project going. I know it will take me a long time to get something like this going, and it will be very time consuming. Feel free to give your comments and your suggestions.

Though http://www.ootp-leagues.com/ is supposed to do what you are talking about, I don't think it does it as effectively as I think people would like to see. There's many problems with it imo:

-there's far too many leagues on it
-(I assume) some leagues are defunct (no longer exist)
-I doubt many commishes update changes to their league
-it does not list some info that I think people would like to see
-I doubt many people who are looking to join a league either know about it or figure it's worth the time to dig through
-it would be great if there was some sort of rating system of the leagues

I think a better idea might be to ask .400 to make some improvements to that site and promote it more.

I do like your idea about a place for hopeful GMs to post what types of leagues they would like to join. Though I'm sure someone might say that is what this board is for, I think making a site like the above leagues board but for GMs would be more efficient. It would probably be best to put it on the same site, just have its own section.

Somebody tried something similar to what you're talking about. The site is here, if you want to check it out. I don't think it's being updated anymore, but you might get some ideas from it.

And no, it's not affiliated with my league. The initials are a coincidence.

No that site isnt being updated anymore.

The Ultimate League List post from 2 weeks ago would be a nice place to start.

Agree with KQ. I think it is a .400 thing to improve their league listings. Don't forget most leagues are hosted on their server, so it might be in their interest to check every now or then which ones are still active.

I think it's an excellent idea. I got frustrated to hell to find any online leagues that actually had space or had a website that even worked. So I created my own league. Now I have the opposite problem - I can't find owners.

If you want to set this site up I'd be willing to help. Honestly I think you should have a "Owners Available" and "Leagues Available" system set up. Maybe even two different sub-domains with historical and current. I don't know about the idea of ranking leagues though. If you ranked my league #500 I would tell ya where to stick it and wouldn't post my league there. Just personal opinion.

I am in question about the league rating system. Many people have opinions around here, and all of them are different towards every league. One person may say that the UBL (Cooley's league) is the greatest league around, while someone else may say that the UBL is a OK league. I tjust think my opinion, wheather it may be, would be a bias opinion, because I'm just going by what I see with the site, message board, and the type of league. I just have to think about it a little more before maybe even starting up a ratings system

That's the part I don't like - unless you actually play in the league, you don't have any business really ranking it. And the Mods don't always make a league (or how fancy the HTML is). Plus the top 10 "ranked" teams could have owners you absolutely hate, or there could be rules that you really despise. I think it's a matter of finding which league is actually right for you.. I've had lots of leagues on other programs where we didn't have the best stuff, but all the owners liked each other and were competivive and talked offline from the league every day.

Honestly, I say scrap the whole idea of listing leagues by a rating. There's too much bias involved in that, and there could be some very good leagues at the bottom because "the site was ugly" or "the message board sucked" or something similar.

My idea: Have a page listing owners. Next to their essentials (name, AIM, ICQ, email), make it so they can pick if they want a historical (it'd be great to include time periods), current, or fictional league. This way an owner of a league could skim the list and see what owners would be interested in that league.

For the league pages, again, have seperate pages for historical leagues, current leagues, and fictional leagues. For the historical leagues, list them in order by the time period they started in, going from earliest to latest. For the current leagues and fictional leagues, list them by alphabetical order. Have the essentials for the league info there, such as: GM, how many years simmed out so far, real rosters or drafted, how longs it's been around, those type of things.

By doing this, a prospective owner would be able to skim through the leagues and see which ones tickles his tummy. May not be easy for you alone, but get a few people on this and it could be done pretty quickly. It'd be a lot of help to both GMs and people looking for leagues.

i think i might take up this project, and set up a simple site with an owners wanted/ leagues wanted basis, then break it up due to league type (ie Fictional/Real, Deadball/Rebirth/Modern, etc.)

i think the Keep It Simple strategy would work best for a database site like this.

Well, this was a idea made by me as a project for me to do on my spare time. Nothing too big, but just something I can work on when I'm bored. We can talk, and maybe we might get something going.

Well, I have started the long road of getting this done. I have created a site template, and in the process of creating the rest of the site Wednesday. All I need to find now is a temp. host where I can place the site until I can move it to a paid service.

Just an update to let everyone know the status of everything.
