![]() Sunday August 27th, 1961 Birds Take Command In A.L. Riding on the coat tails of their league best pitching staff, which is led by the trio of Steve Barber(17-3, 2.43), Hal Brown(19-6, 2.32), and "Fat" Jack Fisher(19-7, 2.67 ERA), the Baltimore Orioles have once again assumed command in the American League, taking advantage of a four game losing streak by the Tigers to build up a two and a half game advantage as we head into the final week of August. Looking ahead however the schedule makers have done the Orioles no favors, with 19 of their final 28 games coming against first division clubs. The Tigers on the other hand have just 15 of their final 31 contests against the top clubs in the league. Red Hot Dodgers Close In On Giants With 15 wins in their last 21 games including their last 7 straight, the Los Angeles Dodgers have closed to within a game and a half of the first place Giants. Relying heavily on their pitching staff which is ranked second in the league in ERA(3.48) and first in runs allowed(467), the Dodgers season will most likely hinge on their performance over the next two weeks. Over this brutal two week stretch, LA will play two games in Cincinnati and Chicago, and three games in Milwaukee, before heading home for 7 straight games against the Giants, four in the LA Coliseum, and three in Candlestick Park. Could Phils Escape The Basement? Since finishing 5th in 1957, the Philadelphia Phillies have rarely looked down on anyone in the standings, finishing in dead last in each of the past three seasons, and although they've remained in the basement for virtually all of 1961, their suddenly inspired play over the past two months has left them just a game and a half behind the 7th place Cubs in the battle for the basement. Since July 1st, the Phils have gone 22-28, a marked improvement over their play in the first half where they went 20-54. Regardless of their finish this season though, fans in Philadelphia finally may have something to look forward to in 1962. Orioles Acquire Lau The Baltimore Orioles have purchased the contract of 28 year old catcher Charley Lau from the Milwaukee Braves for $20,000 in cash. MLB Batting Leaders 1. Vada Pinson(Cin) .376 2. I follow sereral dynasties, and while they all (thanks to captaincarl and Nick Soulis
) do a tremendous job, this is my favorite dynasty because of all the work you put into the details, with "BASEBALL DIGEST LIVE", "SPORTS ILLUSTRATED", etc. along with all the screenshots and all ...Outstanding ![]() Too bad your Phillies can't get going - okay, maybe they'll at least get 7th place ... wouldn't be all that bad considering that horrible start.

I agree, the Phillies were an improving team in the early Sixties, even though that hardly shows up in the first two years of your dynasty (almost as in real life), but you should have a lot more fun playing out the Phillies games in the next few seasons

After doing some testing with OOTP 12, I've decided to change this OOTP 11 dynasty up a bit. From now on, I'm going to be using a 3 year recalc with the current year's stats doubled instead of the one year recalc I was using previously. I just feel that by using the 3 year it'll create a little bit more uncertainty.

![]() Sunday September 3rd, 1961 O's And Tigers Set For Showdown With just one half game separating them at the top of the standings, the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers are preparing for their final meeting of the season, when they open up a three game series with a Labor Day doubleheader at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. In their 15 head to head match ups this year, the Birds have gone 9-6, winning the last 4 straight. Monbo Twirls One Hitter In the finest outing by a Red Sox pitcher this season, 25 year old Bill "Monbo" Monbouquette(11-17 3.69) was magnificent on Sunday, holding the Los Angeles Angels to just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 7 in a dominating 11-0 shutout at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. Following their lone hit of the day, a 5th inning leadoff single by catcher Earl Averill Jr., Monbouquette retired the final 15 batters in order, ending the game on an Albie Pearson's bounce out to catcher Jim Pagliaroni Tribe's Score Returns Triumphantly In one of the nicest feel good stories of the season, oft-injured Indians pitcher Herb Score, who had his career de-railed when he was hit in the face by a line drive off of the bat of the Yankees Gil McDougald on May 7th, 1957, took the mound for the first time this season following a serious elbow injury and was absolutely brilliant, holding the expansion Senators to just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 in a complete game 9-0 shutout victory at Washington's Griffith Stadium. Tuesday's win was just the 16th since Score was struck with the line drive 4 years ago, this after winning 36 games in his first two seasons. Torgeson, Garcia Retire Two longtime veterans called it a career this week, when 37 year old 1B Yankees Earl Torgeson and 37 year old Senators pitcher Mike Garcia announced their retirements after being released by their respective clubs. Torgeson, spent 15 years in the Majors with the Braves, Phillies, Tigers, White Sox, and Yankees, ending with a .267 career average and 149 career homers. Garcia spent 14 years in the big leagues, 12 of them with the Indians and one each with the White Sox and Senators. "The Big Bear" was a three time all-star, and a two time 20 game winner who ended his career with a record of 145-98, 24 saves, 1,147 strikeouts, and a fine 3.31 ERA. Pinson First To 200 Hits 23 year old Reds CF Vada Pinson became the first player in the Majors to 200 hits when he singled twice in four at bats in Saturday's 6-1 Reds loss to the Phillies. In just his 4th year in the big leagues, Pinson is having a tremendous season, leading the Majors with a .374 batting average while also racking up 32 doubles, 10 triples, 13 homers, 21 stolen bases, 62 RBI, and 100 runs scored. Pinson's career high in hits is 205 which he reached in 1959, but if all goes well he should surpass that total this week. MLB Standings Last edited by PhillieFever; 09-06-2011 at 11:45 AM. |

They are bad, but there were several teams in history who hovered in the .235 to .250 winning percentage area. Namely the 1916 Athletics(.235), 1935 Braves(.248), 1962 Mets(.250), and the 1904 Senators(.252)

![]() Sunday September 10th, 1961 Tigers Regain Control In Junior Circuit Buoyed by their doubleheader sweep of the Orioles on Labor Day, the Detroit Tigers have once again gained the upper hand in the battle for the American League flag, winning 5 of their last 6 to take a three and a half game lead over the suddenly struggling Orioles who have lost 7 of their last 9 including two straight to 9th place Washington. Giants Continue To Hold On In NL Following a week in which they split six games with the rival Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants remain in control in the National League, leading the second place Braves by one game, the Dodgers by two, and the Cardinals by six. On Sunday however something will have to give, as the Giants and Dodgers battle for the 7th straight time and the final time this season, and the pitching match-up couldn't be better. The Giants will send ace hurler Mike McCormick(21-7, 2.41) to the mound against Dodger ace Stan Williams(20-5, 1.76) in a titanic struggle between the two most bitter rivals in the National League. Johnson's Hit Streak Reaches 25 Mired in 9th place with a record of 53-90, the Washington Senators have finally given their fans something to cheer about, thanks to red hot SS Bob Johnson, who ran his hitting streak to 25 games on Saturday with a 6th inning single off of the Orioles Dick Hall. Johnson, who was batting .230 when the streak began on August 12th has upped his average a whopping 34 points, all the way up to .264 Jay Reaches 20th Win In Style Given up on by the Braves and traded to the Reds following an 8-9 season in 1960, 26 year old righty Joey Jay has been nothing short of spectacular this season, picking up his 20th win of the season on Monday with a two hit 3-0 shutout of the Philadelphia Phillies. The shutout was Jay's league leading 5th of the season, and it upped his record to 20-9 while lowering his ERA to a fine 2.67 Cepeda, Podres Suspended Following Brawl Due to a scheduling quirk, the Giants and Dodgers were scheduled for 7 games in 8 days against one another beginning last Sunday, and following 5 hard fought contests of which they Giants took three, the lid blew off in game six when following a Willie Mays first inning homer, Dodgers starter Johnny Podres nailed the Giants Orlando Cepeda in the back with a pitch, setting off a wild brawl which resulted in the ejections of both Podres and Cepeda. Following the game, a 7-3 Dodgers win, both players were informed by National League President Warren Giles that they were being suspended and fined. Cepeda was suspended for 3 games and fined five thousand dollars, while Podres was suspended for 5 games and fined five thousand dollars. Giles then issued a warning, that any more on field brawls would result in harsh suspensions and fines that would carry into the World Series. Indians Make Two Separate Deals The Cleveland Indians made two separate deals on Wednesday, trading 27 year old catcher Ken Retzer to the Washington Senators for 26 year old 2B Chet Boak in the first deal, before then sending 32 year old OF Chuck Tanner to the expansion Angels in a straight cash deal said to be worth $25,000 Tigers Acquire Wertz Off Of Waivers Hoping to improve their bench, the Detroit Tigers claimed 36 year old 1B Vic Wertz off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox, paying Boston the $30,000 waiver fee. Braves Cimoli Suspended Upon being called out on strikes on a questionable call, Braves Of Gino Cimoli exploded on home plate umpire Stan Landes, berating him until he was finally ejected from the game. Following the game, a 3-2 Braves loss, Cimoli had more to say, and for that he was suspended by NL Chief Warren Giles for 3 games. Tigers Bunning On Fire Hoping to lead his team to a pennant, 29 year old Tigers ace Jim Bunning has been simply spectacular of late. Since July 25th, Bunning has gone 6-2 with 60 strikeouts, 6 complete games, and a stunning 1.40 ERA over 77.1 innings in 9 starts. He's averaged 6.98 strikeouts per 9 innings, and posted an incredibly low WHIP of 0.93 MLB Standings Last edited by PhillieFever; 09-06-2011 at 11:45 AM. |
