How do you choose your colors?

How do you guys choose your colors when making team jerseys and caps?

Do you create the jersey and cap colors from scratch?

Do you use a some type of color palette or web program to help select the colors that you are looking for?

Or do you just start throwing different colors around and hope for the best?

Thanks

Well, that depends. For real life teams (MLB, ***, Mex. League, etc.), I choose the color(s) from the team logo/script with the color picker tool (I work in Photoshop. IDK how this would work in Gimp, Paint or other such programs, though).

I don't do much fictional stuff but if/when I do, I choose a logo that I like and follow the same procedure. Hope this helps.

For fictional teams I try to go from the logo if there is one. If you want to start from scratch you can just use your imagination and go with what looks good. Or try this site where you can find a "pre-made" scheme you like...

Very nice link Tombair... thanks much.

Like Tombair, I pull my jersey colors straight from the logo. Sometimes I'll toss in an additional flair color for piping or outlining or something, but it always has to match the logo or text.

Here's a link that I find very useful for color codes...

You can use a color picker/chooser to use different types of color schemes.

This tends to be my approach as well. I hunt for a logo, or at something to work off, then take the colors from that. If I can't find a good logo or decide on something simple (like just a script letter), then I wing it. I tend to stick to dkred/dkblue/black/white in these scenarios. Those are pretty standard colors.

That being said, I tend to like old timey things and hate bright colors like tangerine or teal. So my unis can be a little drab. It doesn't bother me even a little to have a grey textured uniform that just says CLEVELAND on it.

This for me too. Well, except I occassionally do a "loud" color... because I get bored of darker colors. My uniforms tend to be quite simply too.

I pull the colors from the logo if i am making a fictional ones , i also add a little flare to the caps and jerseys and if im making nonfictional one ill go by the team colors ,i try to make them look like the actual jerseys and sometimes add a little flare

I use the color wheel as a gide line. I use 3 different programs for my logos and jerseys and caps . i use The Logo Creator,Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 i use all three in a tag team sort of way they are all very useful to get the jersey ,caps and logos just right for me . Well hope that helps

Add me to this list. IMO, that's why some of the most traditional jerseys (i.e: Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cards, Tigers) never change, while 70's style stuff (Astros, Pirates, Padres, White Sox) was so short-lived. Nothing against colorful jerseys, but they're just not for me.

Thanks a bunch to all of you, for describing what you do and those links will be very useful!

Even though I really enjoy classic uniforms like the Tigers, Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, etc., I only play OOTP with fictional teams and players. I sometimes include a real team jersey, like the Cardinals however, the team will not be from St Louis. I will call them the Chicago Cardinals or the Cairo Cardinals.

I too, am not a fan of flashy and bright uniforms however, I am a big fan of Richard Petty Blue and Tar Heel Blue. Even though teal is darker than the above mentioned blue, the teal colored Marlin uniforms used several years ago, I think are very sharp!

As a side note-----To this day I do not understand the thinking behind teams having black jerseys. In cool weather it would not be a problem however, in 80-90+ degree heat, those guys are baking in them, which contributes to heat exhaustion and fatigue, when compare to lighter colored jerseys....just my

It looks as if I am at a disadvantage since it appears that most of you base your jersey colors off of a preexisting logos. Since I don't have the talent or ability to make them, I normally use just a image for a team's logo, most of which, are all white and not in the form of a circle or have any words included in them. I will use logos that have been shared by this community if they fit in with the team name.

Thanks again for all of the descriptions on how you guys make your jerseys and caps. It will greatly help me when making mine!

Well, you can always go with colors that define the club moniker (i.e: green and gold/orange for "Parrots" or red and gold/black for "Devils") or colors that define the city/region, in case the moniker were a little more generic/ambiguous.

Certain places have color codes (if not actual flags or insignias). You could do some research (wiki, google, etc.) for inspiration and have some fun tinkering w/it till you get something you're comfortable with.

Edit: btw, agreed on the black alt jerseys. Especially, Toronto. They may play in a dome so the heat's not so much of a problem, but they're the BLUE Jays, not the Crows or Ravens lol

Money. Once upon a time, like the 1990s, black sold well. Player comfort had nothing to do with it.

These are awesome sites. Thank you so much. I always had a problem choosing complimentary colors.

I am currently making uniforms for a league I am doing and most of the logos are a simple letter. Most are white with a colored outline. Sometimes simply is wonderful.

Interesting. It sounds like I'm in the minority in that I like to make a league and start with the names/stories first, colours second, and logos last. Typically I'll think to myself, "okay, I want this team to be (in successfulness and rivalry at least) like the Yankees, this one like the Red Sox, this one like Baltimore, etc" and their names are... Now the colours won't necessarily be the same as their real life counterparts, but sometimes they are. Past that though I have a bunch of colour combinations (from different sports like the Chargers, the Lightning, the Lakers, etc) in my mind (and in a spreadsheet) and I'll match those schemes to the teams where they make sense (a Yankees team is going to have a dark colour scheme, not a light bright one).

Yeah, that's exactly what I do until later in the league I start introducing more advanced logos, usually for the better teams or better stories first.
