Percentage of updaters?

Howdy. I downloaded the OOTP11 demo last week, and didn't get into it much until a day or two before it expired - but unfortunately, now I'm hooked. I played a ton of Pursue the Pennant back in the day, and this game is right up my alley. After my demo license expired, I started clicking around and found all the online leagues - I want in!

Here's my question: How many people are going to update to v12? I could type in some credit card #'s tomorrow and be in the game w/ 11 - but I'd hate to be left wishing I had waited and gotten the shiny new game. Is OOTP11 generally regarded as a solid release? Will people stay in that version until something drastically different comes out? Or do most people get the upgrade and use the latest and greatest. When do we expect 12 to come out? And is there a "loyalty discount" so that it would make sense for me to get 11 now, and upgrade for a nominal fee when 12 comes out.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm looking forward to starting up an online team and bringing home some titles. Have a good one.

My league is considering updating, some will some won't it's hard to say. There is no loyalty discount that I know of.
If you want, wait to buy 12 and use OOTP8 to pass the time and get use to the game. It's free:

Out of the Park Baseball 8 Free

It does not have quite all the fancy features as 11 but it is a solid release and I would recommend it for sure. The engine and interface are similar so the transition shouldn't be to tough.
Just my humble advice.

It would be reasonable to assume Version 12 will be released by opening day. Last year was close, and the implication from the come-ons they've sent out is that their goal is to be a bit earlier this year.

Second, the loyalty discount has come and gone. It expired at the end of January.

norva13x gave some good advice.

Not so. The 25% off discount offer is still good. Check the "Save $10" announcement on the top left of the forum main pages.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Correct. The January part was only to get the game 2 days earlier:

Hurry, though, because only those who pre-order in January will get the game early, and the special pricing ends the day before OOTP 12 ships this spring.

As for the question as to whether online leagues update right away or not the answer is some do update right away, some wait months until one or more patches have been released, and some leagues skip a version or more. If I had to attach %s to those 3 I'd say it's something like 25/50/25 or maybe even 20/60/20.

Right on - thanks for all the info guys. I see a couple posts up that v11 is now only $20, might make the decision a little easier.

After reading around the forums, it sounds like 12 could fix some financial/AI issues that would be worth the investment. For as immersive as this game is, might as well have the version that'll make the time/brainpower investment pay off with the most rewarding result. I'm going to have a cup of coffee and contemplate free 8 vs. $20 11, and maybe put in a pre-order.

Thanks again for the replies with the scoop. Much appreciated.

Yeah, I'd say if you really like OOTP for what it is, get 12. 11 is, overall, the best OOTP that has been made. 12, overall, will be better. There are some long time customers who will say "This is missing" or "That is missing", and for them these things might be enough for them to stay at a certain version. But if you're new to OOTP, go for newest and best - that would be 12. If you enjoyed 11 so much that you really don't think you can wait for 12 to come out then spend the $20 and get 11. If you love baseball as much as most people around here, you'll get your $20 worth in the 2+ months before 12 is released. Because OOTP is so good that, let's face it, Markus gets ripped off every time he sells a copy of the game.

Yep, all this. You can't beat the value.

One thing I will mention is that in general, online leagues keep up with the current version. Some may wait until after a couple patches to convert, but eventually it happens so maintain a wide recruiting base. So if you are indeed planning on joining online leagues, keep in mind that it generally means you will be buying the game every year.

I took it as cosmic guidance that the price got cut in half the same day I took the time to post about maybe buying it. Got 11, and will most likely get 12 unless I get in a sweet league that's dead-set against upgrading.

Stoked, should be fun. Anyone have any newb pointers? Is it easy to import team logos? If I wanted to take over the Sox the night after the Buckner error - would that be easy? Get to use all the real-life transactions I liked, and not deal with the ones I didn't? Hopefully I win a WS before 04 so I don't have to trade Nomar away.

Thanks again for the help, and if anyone has any advice to make the game more enjoyable or needs someone for a league - let me know. Thinking summer baseball when it's -4 and I'm bailing on riding some lifts is pretty nice...
