As stated above, Facebook can be a more effective communication tool because of its immediacy and accessibility via mobile technology. This is absolutely critical for companies seeking to communicate with customers and gather feedback in a medium that is close to real time.

Also, having a large number of Facebook fans builds consumer confidence in a brand and conveys an image of legitimacy and success, especially to prospects. By making information, contests, or promotions exclusive to Facebook, companies can drive their existing customers to become fans on the site in order to get in on the details. This increases the number of fans, which is a benefit to the company as explained above.

With more fans, there will be more comments and reviews posted for prospects and customers to browse, and they can be accessed more quickly through social media. Company Facebook profiles are also easily accessible to the public and more so than message forums.

Sure, there are going to be some customers who are opposed to the entire concept of social media and will feel left out. I am sure that a few customers of Best Buy or Borders or Xbox or Time Magazine will feel like they've been betrayed if a coupon is offered only on Facebook, or a giveaway goes only to Facebook fans, or a news story breaks on Facebook first.

But they are not going to stop supporting the company or buying its products. No one posting disappointment in this thread is going to stop buying OOTP because it made an announcement on Facebook and not on this forum. Maybe a couple of people will threaten it, but from a business perspective it simply does not compare to the significant marketing potential and gains to be made by using tools like Facebook to do exclusive marketing. There are countless studies and a mountain of data to support this.
All well and groovy, but someone from OOTP (like maybe the new marketing guy?) could have posted the little Facebook blurb on this forum at the same time. I don't think folks here are demanding that this be the ONLY place to get info on OOTP, but it would be nice if the same info posted elsewhere was available here at the same time. That would be a small enough courtesy to ask for long-time customers.

Thanks, Shane, for posting this here on the forum.

Much appreciated.

I don't have any need for desire for Facebook and other social media.

However, I hope Markus uses all of them to get more sales and is therefore enriched and enabled to make OOTPB better and better each year.

I'm sure he will post on this forum, too. If it's a day or two late, I have no problem with that.

I am too. Facebook is nothing compared to a dedicated website.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Exactly. Of course there will always be someone turning this all around and trying to make us look bad, right Charlie?

Worded wrong, I meant working face to face with customers were like I said before the most important customer you have is the one already purchasing from you.

This is exactly the reason a post here (even at the same time as the Facebook post) should have been made. I totally understand the need for social media sites, but simultaneous posts arent that hard to do.

I don't feel the least bit annoyed or insulted. Just my opinion of course.

I don't use social media at all, and I understand that that may put me behind the info curve on occasion. As long as I am afforded the same opportunities re OOTP as those folks who do use social media, I have no problem with however OOTP chooses to advertise. But I agree that folks who frequent the OOTP forum have earned the right to expect to be treated on a par with those who don't come here.

That's right. But my intention was not to make anyone look bad. It was simply to bring a dose of reality to the discussion.

If 10 people feel like jilted lovers but are going to remain loyal to the brand, and 100 more become fans of Facebook because they don't want to miss out on future announcements, then the company wins. In this case, it appears to be an oversight by Markus, but it's also a proven marketing strategy for countless consumer businesses.

Then again, many people aren't running a business and don't have to develop marketing strategies to drive revenue and turn a profit. They're not facing the survival stakes, so it's difficult for them to see beyond their individual perspective as a consumer.

But none of it really matters in the end. We can have differences in opinion or preference all we want. It doesn't affect the reality that social media exclusivity is now a fundamental tool of consumer business, and whether we like it or not, it's effective, helps boost business, and is not going away.

Doesn't really bother me. To me it is just another ootp site where you can get information from. You do not need an account to view ootps facebook page. It would be no different than reading info on another website.

I suppose it's better than releasing news on a competing message board like they used to.
