Sim vs. Played?
My apologies if this has been covered before, but after digging through twenty pages of old messages, I didn't see the answer, so I thought I would go ahead and post it...
Weird situation which may just be my oddities in playing OOTP5, but I've noticed something that I wanted to float past you guys before I went much further. Is there a difference in the way that the game determines the stats for a player in "played" games vs. simmed games? The reason that I bring this up is from two glaring statistical oddities that I noticed for my team within a fictional league. Thus far, for my team, I've played every single game. No simmin' for my team, no siree! But I've found two "weird" things. 1.) I lead the major leagues in ERA. Not too shabby, considering I drafted rather heavily in favor of pitching and have a decent staff. (If I do say so myself.) However, the team ERA is something around 2.40. Again, not that big a deal, but the next best ERA in the league sits at something like 3.42. 2.) My batting sucks. Completely. I am 30 out of 30 teams in BA. The team BA for me is near .241. The next worst? .258. While not as glaring a difference as the ERA, it still seems rather odd that a first place divisional team with 55+ wins by the all-star break has this poor of hitting throughout the lineup. Again, it may just be me...but I thought I would ask anyway. |

I don't think so, but maybe.
As for #1, maybe your staff really is just that much better performance wise with your help telling them what to do and/or just by their own ability. For #2, I really don't put much emphasis on BA, how are your OBP and OPS ratings in comparison to the rest of the league? But here again, perhaps you're getting more out of the players by controlling them yourself (I'm thinking small ball here) than the computer would.

The game uses the SAME ENGINE to process both, the ONLY differences are YOUR decisions.

The difference in the ERAs may be due to the way that you and the AI handle relievers. I notice in a lot of games that I play that the AI tends to use more relief pitchers than me. They would bring in a pitcher to pitch to one or two batters. This may wind up tiring out the relievers to a point that they have to leave their starter in longer then they want or have tired relievers pitch, thus allowing more runs.
For me, if I had a reliever pitch the last two days, I would try to rest him rather than use him and have him not available later. |

I play about 10-15 games a year and sim the rest in my latest solo endeaver (1985 was the start year with a fantsy draft, 2 new blank teams and a division realignment like modern day)
Biggest difference I see is my Leadoff Guy, Mike Felder, is always leaps and bounds beyond any other guys in either league in SB , always at least by 15-20 , hes avg 70 SB the last few years, high of 78. Granted, I run him by steal or hit and run - EVERY time he is on and have strategies set like that.
