A possible trick to reduce your league file size

Thanks to Corsairs who found this issue (I don't want to steal his credit), he noticed that the checkbox to only include updated images in the league file only works if you use OOTP to actually upload the file. Many commishes including myself choose to upload the league file outside of the game since it uploads much faster that way. If you choose to do it that way, ootp will choose to include -EVERY- image file in your league file since the last time you uploaded from within the game.

I have determined an effective way to handle this is to choose every so often (I do it once a week, but you can base it on what works best for you) to upload the file from within the game. Doing so takes longer, but it "resets" the image counter so to speak. From that point on, only images newer than that date will be included in the league file.

Effectively, my online leagues run 5 times a week, I choose to upload from within game once a week, and upload outside of the game the other 4 times.

This has helped me cut my online league in its 82nd season from ~120 MB down to a 17MB file once again.

I know for a fact this effects both OOTP9 and OOTPX, it might go back even further than that however (I have long since uninstalled older versions I am afraid)

Thanks to Alan for researching this workaround to the images issue. Since a lot of us do our uploading outside of OOTP, this situation can be a real hassle. Alan's staggered in-game upload approach is an excellent way to handle the problem. It allows you to continue using your 3rd-party FTP client for fast out-of-game uploads while still getting the benefits of the "Include new and changed images" feature of the in-game upload system. I highly recommend that all commissioners give Alan's method a go.

I'm a little confused as to how this works (not the recommendation to save space part, but how the game increases the file size), but with this knowledge can we point to Andreas what he could do to decrease the file size without having to do this step every once in awhile?

Not sure what is happening with your file unless you normally by hand remove stuff from it before uploading it. Remember the file won't reduce in size until the next time you create it. You have to upload it before the game remembers what images have already been included.

Andreas is already aware of the issue. it is not as much something broken as it is something being used in an originally unintended way. ie: if everyone uploaded using the game this wouldn't be an issue. Andreas has said that this is too complex to change how it all works for now but he is looking into fixing it for ootp11
