Baseball should implement a rule that a strike be charged to a hitter who call a very late timeout. When pitching trying to alter or stop your motion in a hurry is a good way to injure yourself and it happened on two notable occasions when I played highschool and college ball.

This is silly. The player doesn't call time. The umpire does. I fail to see how punishing a player for an umpire's "mistake" is going to have any effect.

Or he lost control of the ball after having timeout called while in the midst of his motion, which ANYONE who played baseball will tell you is a no-no in the book of any pitcher. And any pitching coach will tell a pitcher that if that happens, finish the pitch. Trying to stop it is a great way to get hurt.

I won't presume to know Beckett's intent. But I do know from experience that as a pitcher what Abreu did is dangerous.
If you're clear on it, I'm now happy. Whatever dude. Its common knowledge.

As for 'ANYONE who played baseball', trust me, I did. So if that's your point here, find another. If it wasnt, fine too.

I won't argue the point. I think the majority of those asked will side with me on his overall attitude.

There's really no such thing as a hitter who calls a late timeout. Like PP said, it's the umpire who calls late timeouts. Any competent umpire will simply ignore a late timeout request from a hitter. The umpire in this Beckett/Angels situation f'ed up by granting the timeout when he did.

Six games is a pretty low level suspension for a pitcher. One rotation missed at most? Wow, that's going to make a difference to the Red Sox season isn't it?
He only was not thrown out of the game because starting pitchers are deemed more important to a game than any position player.

Well Beckett obviously did change his action or else he meant it to go there which would make it deliberate. Obviously the Red Sox pitching coaches should be going mad with him for that than moaning about a six game suspension they're trying to get off of.

I don't think the homeplate umpire messed up the time call at all in this situation. Remember, there is always going to be a delay between time being called by the batter and the umpire actually vocalizing that time was granted. If Abreu called time before Beckett started towards the plate, especially in a situation where the pitcher held as long as Beckett did there, he should grant it.

Just like Abreu should have dusted himself off and been ready for the next pitch. Just like Torii Hunter and the rest of the Angels should have stayed sitting in the dugout. Just like the rest of the pitchers coming all the way from the bullpen (there should be a suspension for all of the players that left the bullpen).

It just makes the game look like a version of Ice Hockey where this sort of stuff is orchestrated.

Leaving the bench or the bullpen when not required to do so should result in loss of their next at-bat (ie, auto-out)

Or an automatic one game suspension.

Oh, well as long as you say it's common knowledge I guess it's so. No need to actually support the statement with anything. Manufacturing support in your head is significantly easier.

I don't trust that you did because you seem rather ignorant to what's "common knowledge" to those who played.

You're rather good at manufacturing support in your head. I simply asked what made you say that. You responded by getting pissy which, as others have noted, seems to be your M.O. around here. I would think your approach would be much more positive given all the support the voices in your head seem to be giving you.

Wrong, at least in ice hockey, they act more than talk. Like I said, it doesn't take much toughness to scream at someone and act like you are going after someone with three guys holding you.

He should have kept his ass on the mound if he didn't want to seem like he wanted trouble from the beginning.
Ok, So Abreu can stand there with his arms out basically inviting Beckett into at least tossing verbal barbs, but Beckett is supposed to just stand on the mound.

How is Beckett a dickhead? Do you know him? I have watched most of his starts with the Sox and can't see how you could come to that conclusion. He pitches with his quiet fire most of the time and sometimes it comes out. Do you think Grant Balfour is a dickhead too because of the way he handles himself on the mound?

Which is exactly what was said or implied in the rest of my post. Way to take me out of context.

Come on now, a baseball went whizzing by his head while he was outside of the batter's box, I think his reaction was pretty reserved if anything. A hat tip, or a "my bad" from Beckett and the entire thing probably ends right there. He went in the other direction.

I don't think Beckett should have been thrown out for the "pitch", given the situation you just can't determine whether it was intentional. However, he caused a situation to escalate (twice) and I think the punishment is just. Especially considering it won't even really cause him to miss a start so much as to get one pushed back by a day or two.

I think they should do it like Ice Hockey. All they'd have to do is get all the players from both teams on the field into a big mob and just hammer the A and B buttons. Whichever team has more of their players come flying out of the scrum on their ass is the loser. It would certainly pay to have more fat guys than the other team.

actually that sounds more like current baseball scrums then hockey. The A-B buttons would be funny though.

You know why they don't make that rule, while other sports do? Baseball is the only sport where one side is decidedly out-numbered on the field. If something starts up, the team batting could be outnumbered as badly as 9-on-2.

All the more reason teams should just cut the crybaby chit and play baseball

I agree. Throwing at someone's head for calling a timeout after you've held the ball for 20 seconds, and leaving the mound to get in someone's face after throwing the ball at someone's head, and getting in the opposing manager's face after things have calmed down after you left the mound to get in someone's face after throwing a ball at their head... all that stuff needs to go!
