OOTP 5 and OOTP 9 are two totall different games.

I bought OOTP 2006 when it came out and HATED it. Never tried any of the other versions until now. Just tried version 9 and did not like it at all. The interface is new and shiny - and clunky. I just reinstalled 6.5. Much as I'd like to join the rest of the world, I just do not like the new interface.

I'm glad you didn't just try 2006 and decide to go back to 6.5. If 9 isn't to your liking then thats to bad but I know you will continue to have a lot of fun with 6.5.

To me 6.5 is still one of the greatest computer games I have ever played. Now I loved 9 and I will love 10 but sometimes its hard to top the best out there.

The interface takes lots of time to learn but it if you grasp it then you will learn to like it.

I'm still not a fan of the new game's interface. It's always just felt less like baseball to me than 6.5, and I'm not really sure why.

I think the interface for me was easy to learn because on some level it mirrors the interface in the Football Manager games.

Aside from that the interface has to be much more complex than in version 6.5 because you now have a much greater wealth of things you can do inside the game. Think back to 6.5 and compare it to 2009 and think of all the differences in terms of what you can do in 2009 that you cannot do in 6.5. There has to be menus and buttons for all of those new options and that in and of itself weighs down the interface.

Proof of OOTP6's quality is in the pudding. Its not available for free even though its four versions past.

To me the attraction of 6.5 (I still play in a 6.5 online league) is the fact that it's fairly simple. Nowhere near the amount of bells & whistles of the new versions. It does a good job of simulating baseball and especially when teamed with Catobase, provides excellent historical record-keeping. Is it perfect? No, there are issues, which have been enumerated elsewhere, but nothing's perfect. The attraction is simplicity coupled with good baseball simulation.

Having said that, I love the new version and am incredibly excited at the impending OOTP X release. I really like the ability to create a big, multi-faceted baseball universe. It can be unwieldy, sure, but it's a wicked amount of fun too. As Markus continues to refine it, it gets better each version (much like the originals did in leading up to 6.5).

Bottom line: OOTP 6.5 is "easier" to use because it has fewer features (and an easier UI), and it does a great job of simming baseball. OOTP 8, 9, etc are fantastic because they also do a great job of simming baseball but provide incredible depth and flexibility.

Try the double steal. It's remarkable how many SB you can rack up. An average team can get 200. If you had the Cardinals or Reds in the 1980's, 350 to 400 SB was doable.

If you knew what to look for, there was always a C in the draft pool that would turn into King King. Make sure to trade him when he turned 30, though.

Find excellent young MR with endurances in the 40's. Spend time in Spring Training stretching them out. By the time they were in their late 20s, they were superb SP.

Is there a 19 yr old LHB outfielder with excellent power/speed numbers? Trade for him, and make him the centerpiece of your championship teams.

Want to win perpetually? Schedule event dates against bad teams, boost your fan interest to the max, and offer contract extensions to the 26 and 27 year old players. They sign cut-rate contract extensions.

When a player turned 32, trade him. Preferably that day.

Towards the end of my 6.12 days, I was averaging 130 wins a season.
What this guy said is dead on as far as 6.12 was concerned. I've always had more than 100 wins in a season and I knew that once my players were in their 30s, I had a couple more years to trade them for 1st/2nd rounders. It was a nice cycle I had going. It was easy to exploit this...

Eventually I purchased 2006 and 2007 and stopped. I'm really looking forward to OOTP 10 though. Been trolling the forums daily now. haha

Yeah 6.5 was like the game had reached its peak with that code.
I agree that 2006 was bad but it wasnt front page sports 99.
It was how much could Markus get done before he had to get the product out.
Remember 6.5 didnt happen overnight. It had been building since ootp1.
Its the same thing with 2009 only this time he probably didnt really have to start from scratch with ideas of what to put into the game to make the game great but rather im just guessing here spend more time on the coding. Thus even though 2006 was bad there seems to be a quicker improvement to 2009 than ootp1 to ootp 6.5.
Once you get use to the interface i dont think you would go back to 6.5
even though 6.5 was great.

As a simmer, there are still features that were in v6 (and v4 for that matter) that still have not made it into the new versions.

- Single game record books
- Automatic sim stopping for historic events (500 home runs, 3000 hits, no hitters, etc)
- Easy minor league roster management (mainly the ability to see the arrows on the transaction screen)

I almost exclusively use OOTP for online leagues so the ease with which you could rack up ridiculous steal numbers or consecutive 100+ win seasons in single player never really bothered me personally. Having said that though, I will readily agree that the things mentioned are certainly pretty big problems.

Nice thoughts here, mates. This is the calmest and most intelligent discussion of this comparison that I have seen in a long, long time.

It seems to me that one's preferences are closely tracked by which aspects of the game that you care about most. Me, I've always been most interested in the player-career aspects (i.e., the way the game handles a player's career arc), and on that score I readily put 6.5 away when something came along that was better, for the reasons cited by Raidergoo.
Except for playng online, which I did for a couple of years. For that, 6.5 was hard to replace.

OOTP 6 was the first version I really dived into and used a lot. I ran my online league with 6.12. I messed around with v5 a bit but was never around for the earlier versions.

When the new coded games came out, I was completely lost and didn't enjoy joining online leagues because of the confusion with the new versions and all the bells and whistles.

But now I completely enjoy v9 along with v8. They are incredibly easy to use once I got used to everything and just converted my old online league I ran, into a solo league and been playing that forever now.

So I will always look back very fondly on v6 because it was my first but now in 2009, I am in love with v9 and cant wait for v10 to come out!

Good post. I just can't understand how anyone can find the current interface difficult. If I can do it anybody can!!

The interface isn't difficult, but it's just too damn big for online leagues.

OOTP9 is the perfect game for solo sims, but it doesn't come close to 6.5 for online leagues. I'm the commissioner of a 6.5 league and I play in 6.5 leagues and OOTP9 leagues

Not sure I get it. As a player, not a commish, I see no difference. The in-game download in the current game is smooth and flawless. I don't see any difference between my solo leagues and online leagues.

Is it a functional thing that bothers commissioners?

I found it hard at first transitioning from 6.5 to the new interface, but it didn't take long before I was darting around in that. When I tried to go back to 6.5 to mess around I was having a hard time with that interface.

I really like v9 but the thing I missed from v6.5 was the Transaction screen - having the ability to see the entire organization (having only 3 levels of minors) in one screen.

For me, there were several things about OOTP 6.5 I miss. In fact, if OOTP 6.5 had the custom facegen photos in it, I would be very tempted to go back to playing it. These are the main things:

- OOTP 6.5 fired up the program fast and loaded massive games quickly. I find the biggest dislike I have about OOTP 2009 is how long it takes for both the program and my saved game to load.

- I always liked that both previous year season stats and current year stats were on screen in OOTP 6.5. Don't know why that was dropped.

- The fonts were cleaner and it felt more like a true stats game in 6.5

Just my two cents...
