As for the original question...

I wanted to run some Cato tests, so to do so, I created a 16-team fictional league, started it in 1901, based on cities with populations between 100,000 to 200,000 in 1900, swiped some logos from the graphics forum here, found a random name generator for manager names, did some research here and at Henry's site in regards to player creation modifiers and League Totals, created ballparks for each of the teams with the random ballpark generator and weather data from someplace online, found a random number generator for stadium capacity, and I'm now devising a system by which managers will retire/resign/be fired, all tracked by Cato.

Then I went and simmed thru 1910, and will continue from there.

So no, I don't feel funny one bit.

Thank you everybody for responding to my initial post. I'm the guy who started this whole thing. Well since then my wife has excepted my ootp obsession. She even helped me make one of my fictional logos. However I will never let my boys Mac-o, Spook and Rob know about this. I'm not ready to give up the "hood credentials".
Anyway, I just bought a new laptop since my new position at work will take me on the road more. But, subconsciously I just got it so I won't miss an OOTP game. Damn, I'm pitiful.

It's really cool. I try to explain OOTP to my friends and they wouldn't understand. Plus, I know I'm weird when only a couple of people from our country plays this game (at least that I know).

You've found a form of recreation that you really enjoy that doesn't involve drinking, taking drugs, gambling, porn, crime, or running around or your wife. Pitiful? No. Rather virtuous, I should think.

Someone else once said that no matter what the expressed reason for an OOTP player to buy a laptop is, the real reason ends up being playing OOTP on it.

I didn't really have to say that but she agreed anyway.

Oh, It is a DVD player for the kids when we hit the road. Something we said we'd never do.

My own "obsession" began and ended long before it was written, of course.

I've read that Jack Kerouac ran his own fantasy league pretty much all his life, with a game he created using coded cards. Maybe he helped inspire Coover?

I have plenty of friends who either know about the game and roll their eyes or others who have no idea what the hell it is I'm doing. But it doesn't matter. Going back to version 5, this is the game I always dreamed of playing in my youth and the fact that it exists now makes me pretty darn happy. I don't think you need to worry about your boys or anybody else. If your wife is down, that's pretty cool.

But all in all, it's your hobby and there are far more destructive things you could be doing.

But to answer your initial question. Yes. I do feel funny doing this sim stuff sometimes. I get so engrossed and almost get mad that I can't share it with anyone around me.

I stumbled across this thread and got a chuckle out of it...but thought I would share. I've been baseball simming since like 1982. I've been married almost 10 years now. I used to wish I had someone I could talk to about it...but then started talking a little bit about the fantasy games with my wife.

Well long story short, my wife actually joined one of the online leagues I run. I am the Yankees in the league and when I had trouble finding a Red Sox owner, she jumped at the chance. Now she is learning about baseball history and I now have someone I can talk about baseball with in great detail. She still doesn't really get it, but at least she sort of understands.

Heh, you wanna talk geeky? I've been simming baseball since the old C-64 "Computer Baseball." I've been playing fantasy baseball since we had to wait til the paper came to find out how we did the day before, and I (gasp) have been playing D&D since 1981. Even played a game on Gary Gygax' front fricking porch.
