Marquez had a smart game plan and it paid off late. Baby Bull is a fun fighter to watch but will have this happen to him often until he learns to change gears. He wasnt in the condition to keep up with the pace he was fighting.

I cleaned up on this fight. Can't wait to see my friends in the morning! Marquez has the experience to adjust. Diaz has heart, but sometimes that's not enough.

PS...Glad to see Toms River man make good. I spent summers in Beachwood.

Toms River was a happening place . Part of the revolutionary war was fought there, Nathanal Hale was hung there... quoting, "I only regret that I have but one life to give my country."

And Tom, the Indian for whom the town is name...

Well, I don't know what happened to him. He took off down the river somewhere, I guess.

I told my buddies that Marquez was technically too sound for Diaz and would pick him apart. I thought he'd do it sooner, but it was soon enough. You can't overwhelm Marquez's style with just agression until he's on the downside of his ability. Marquez is always in position to counter if you watch the positioning of his feet. That's why he's so good at this point in his career.

The perfect style to beat his was Casamayor's... but he was too old to pull it off.

If someone will make Marquez lead and counter Marquez's attack, his effectiveness will decrease about 20%.

You had to be somewhat worried after the 7th round. I know I was as I had $$$ on Marquez. In the 8th I felt that Marquez had regained control but I was worried that it was going to come down to the judges in which I didnt like the chances in a close fight against bias judges.

And....Toms River

Toms River had a movie theatre...then towards the end of summer we would make the trip to Seaside Heights...during the dog days we would ride our bikes to Double Trouble.

Labor Day meant the trip back to Irvington...and Newark.

Juan Manuel Marquez is what happened. How dare you try to take away from his incredible victory.

Um, yeah. How dare me! I'm taking nothing away from Marquez that shouldn't be laid at Diaz' feet. Diaz was fairly dominating that fight through 7 rounds, then he got cut and maybe tired and completely fell apart. Granted, Marquez had to be good enough to take advantage of things, but like his setback last year this felt more like a Diaz loss than a JMM victory. Overall, I think this closes more doors for Diaz (for now, anyway; he's still young) than it opens for JMM.

I have to maybe agree with others about the blistering pace. Diaz needs to either start conditioning himself to be able to keep up that work rate for 12 rounds (which, I don't know, may not be possible) or find a way to attack in spurts like everybody else.

Hey - I lived on Howard Street in Irvington for awhile. It was safe back then!

Back in the day, a milk truck used to deliver milk in a glass bottle to the doorstep. Then 7-11's came and that was the end of that.

Toms River and Seaside Heights were great places to "hang out" as a kid. Pizza, snow cones, girls at the beach. Wise-guys getting whacked coming out of clubs every now and then.

Good times!

After coming back from the bombs that Pacquaio hit him with, I wasn't really worried. I really didn't think Diaz would last as long as he did forcing the fight that way. Don't get me wrong, he gave one great effort and against most of the fighters in the division, he can overwhelm a lot of fighters with the sheer volume of punches. But when he's taking hard counters and still fighting in overdive, the end comes suddenly.

If he had Marciano-like power (for a lightweight) that style would be awesome. But he doesn't.

He's young at 25, but that style usually burns out fast.

Anytime someone goes down in a blaze - it's exciting whether you win money or lose it.

Much better than someone pecking, probing and ducking their way to victory.

I lost money on this one. Everything was going how I thought it would. For seven rds that is. Tremendous performance from marquez. Can't do much more than tip my hat to him and pay the book.

I'm proud of Diaz. He went out on his shield like a man. It also would appear that he went to the Cotto & Hearns school of holding when hurt.
