Klitschko-Povetkin / December 13
I am really looking forward to this.
My initial reaction was that Povetkin shouldn't be in this fight just yet but I think that is just a product of being conditioned to see fighters wait so long to really step up. Shame on me for falling prey! The HWs that we have, while some don't think they compare well to other eras, aren't that bad. If they all face each other in the next few years I would hope that one would emerge with all-time credentials. My money would be on Wlad to be that guy but hoping that they all face off in big fights may be a pipe dream. I'll take Wlad by stoppage late in this one.

If you're a Povetkin supporter you might not want him to fight Klitschko just yet, but if you're a fight fan, especially a young one, you want to see the big guys wail on each other. None of this, "My accountant says I don't want to fight more than twice a year!" or "I can't fight (13-23-3) Joe Schnooks until I finish this case of Twinkies." Let's face it, the heavies still drive the sport as far as the media and most fans are concerned. We need one honest-to-gawd international commission (and only one) that fines fighters for not defending their titles and drops fighters from their rankings if they don't fight at least once every two months without documented medical reasons. Can you imagine today's crop fighting three or four times a month with 6-ounce gloves? No wonder kids don't follow the sport. It's a joke nowadays. I'm sorry. I have no interest in watching two little skinny 120 pounders named Juan Gonzalez and Juan Gonzalez slapping each other for 12 rounds. Never mind Sylvia and Ester beating the snot out of each other. Girls do not belong in boxing period. As the Frenchies say,"Vive le difference!" Let them play tennis and golf all they want, but keep them out of boxing.
That's my rant for today. Tune in later for "Why metrosexual males are ruining the movies." Cap

I wish there were a way for the sport to remove the silly stigma now attached to losing a fight but I guess that's not ever going to happen. I too pine for the days of viewing a loss in the ring as a learning experience rather than an economic disaster to the fighter's promoter and manager.
This fight though, is a good thing on that front. I doubt Povetkin will be dropping from sight if he loses. This could be a good trend!

I think the "Undefeated Aura" is a product of the 80's. Never before, that I can see, was there such a premium placed upon not having a loss as there was in that time period.

Yeah, I definitely get that about the undefeated thing. John Ruiz has what? 9 losses? and he basically has no shot. OTOH, for the most part if a guy at this level gets that many losses, it usually means he has a gaping hole in his game and probably shouldn't be fighting at the highest level anyway.
And this is Wlad's 3rd fight this year. Despite his rep for shying away from stuff, he will have fought 3 legitimate top 10 heavies in 2008, and frankly I don't see a lot else he can really do. A rematch with Samuel Peter would be nice, except that Wlad dominated him the first time out and if Vitali beats him, that's pretty much it for the guy's status as #1 contender. Maybe in a year or two when David Haye has proven himself as the next Evander or something, Wlad will have someone good to fight who didn't give him noogies when he was a kid. For now, I guess he's taking on whomever he can take on.

So, you're the promoter, after the Povetkin fight who do you match Wladdy with if he wins and who do you match him with if he loses?
If he beats Povetkin, I would challenge Valuev to fight for all the marbles. If the ABC bums whine, trash their belts. If he loses to Povetkin, matching him would depend on how he lost. If it's close, I'd try to put him in with that other big former SOV Dimitrenko. Cap

With a win, I'd rather see Wlad in against Chagaev although Valuev would be a safer fight (I think).
Whew - Dimitrenko is he loses? You're a tough old match-maker Cap!

Dimitrenko if it's close. Chris Byrd if it's not.
(Besides, I have my doubts we'll see Chagaev in the ring soon.)Cap

Povetkin is a swarmer. If he can force Wlad into a slugging contest, he has a chance. Wlad can't make adjustments. Wlad basically boxes outside defensively and he can get away with it because his power is so elite. He can still hurt people though he isn't committing to his right hand.
Povetkin will force the show and eat many shots in the process and have the fight stopped on cuts in the mid rounds. I think his style might allow him a shot though. MJ

If Povetkin wins are there fears that, like Max Schmeling in the 1930s, he may take the title home and possibly never be seen outside central Europe? There are some weird things going on in 21st century Russia.

I wonder what the PPV tag will be on this thing. Is anyone planning to watch it?

Alexander Povetkin is a bit of an oddity these days. 16 bouts, ranked, highly regarded prospect and no phony titles.

If Povetkin doesn't make it into a street fight, he loses. There isn't a heavyweight today that can outbox Wlad with the exception of his brother. Wlad basically fights outside defensively but his power is so elite that he can still hurt people with the righthand.

I honestly can't see Wlad allowing Povetkin to dictate anything though, he's the more polished and savy fighter. It'll go the way Wlad wants it to go and he'll win unless Povetkin capitalizes on a mental mistake.

I don't see Wlad losing this fight unless he takes it too lightly. A swarming type of fighter can only be effective coming forward which plays into Wlad's strength if he boxes and picks his shots. If he stands and slugs it out, he'll be at a disadvantage. But I think Steward will have the right game plan in place. Povetkin will have to be in great shape and throw a lot of punches. I don't see him doing that. I see an early stoppage from where I'm sitting.

Now it is forever though!
Nuts, the best fight of the fall is up in smoke.
