Endgame,

I gave it a try and unfortunately, it didn't work. Hopefully it is salvageable but I will start a new one just in case it's not.

So, if I don't update, my league is still on 9.16. But what if some of my GMs update? Can they still export? Can they still download the league after a sim? And if I don't update and one of my other leagues (or multiple other leagues) does patch, can I still participate? I guess I'm asking if 9.16 and 9.20 are cross compatible?
The GM must be on the same version as the commish, else the export fails when the commish attempts to import it.

Thank You Markus! You are the Man! I've just downloaded the update but I'm 5 games from the end of my season so I'll apply the update once the World Series is over, can't wait! Unfortunately for me though,it looks as though my Athletics are going to fall short of the pennant, the White Sox hold a 4 game lead with 5 to play.Over in the NL the Cubs are hanging on,leading the NY Giants by a single game with 5 left there as well.I'm kind of hoping for a North Side vs. South Side World Series,we'll see!

How odd. The patch dies for me at around 4 MB every time.

Someone happen to have a mirror up somewhere? If not, I'll just wait until tomorrow.

I am in multiple online leagues, and the Commish's plan to update at various points over the next week or two. So, a couple questions:

1. Does it cause a problem if some GM's in an online league update to the new patch either before or after the commish does?

2. Is it possible for me make another installation of the game in another folder on my hard drive, and update one, but not the other?

edit: Just saw that Raidergoo already answered my first question... so, does the multiple installations on one computer idea work?

Oh, and don't get me wrong. I REALLY appreciate the work that's been done on this game and on this patch. I'm just cautious about updating software is all.
Here's my advice:

Quote:
Q: When should I apply a patch for online league purposes?
A: One might argue that a patch (e.g. going from 6.10 to 6.11) should only be applied in the off-season, but I'd argue that you probably want the benefits of a patch right away and most people in your league are not going to keep different patch versions of the game on their computer for different leagues they're in (and/or solo leagues they play) anyway so it's probably best if all leagues and all users adopt the latest patch right away so that you minimize the problems that may occur when a league and its members are using different patches.

Q: When should an online league upgrade to the next major version?
A: Leagues usually decide to upgrade to the next major version (e.g. going from 6 to 6.5 or 6.5 to 2006) only in the off-season to both: a) minimize the problems that may occur when a league and its members are using different patches and b) run a season somewhat consistently. It might seem contradictory to the advice given above for when to apply patches, but a) it's not unreasonable to expect people to keep different major versions on their computer for different leagues and many people do do it (to do this for patches too, though, probably is unreasonable), and b) the last patch version of a major version usually doesn't have glaring problems that you probably want to upgrade from as soon as possible. A new major version probably does have additions and changes that you'll want to take advantage of as soon as possible, but the additions and changes might be so drastic as to completely throw off how a season is going and that will probably bother more than a few of your members. It's like in real life sports leagues, rule changes are usually not brought in until the start of the next season (major) unless they're deemed immediately necessary (patch) or they're deemed so small that it won't affect the game that much anyway (patch).
Source: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ead-links.html

In the end it's up to the commish, but my advice for patches is to upgrade right away. To take one example, in one league I'm in right now the commish doesn't want to upgrade to this patch until over a week from now for some reason. I don't really understand his reasoning (it sounds like it's more to do with his personal schedule than with the patch), but that's fine. I can wait because I don't have another OOTP9 league I'm concerned with, but if I did and it was upgrading sooner or I had a solo league I wanted to play with, as a member of the online league that wasn't upgrading right away I'd probably just not participate until they did upgrade. So as a commish you can decide not to upgrade for fear of issues if you really want to, but you should probably realize that you're probably creating different issues by not upgrading. Yes, sometimes there are issues with patches, but usually they fix a lot more problems than they create.

2) It should be possible as I've done it with the previous generations, but it's a PITA and how many people are really going to do that. If you don't mind doing it, however, then by all means go ahead. I just think a commissioner should try to do what's most convenient for most of his members, not expect his members to adapt to what is most convenient for each of their commissioners.

Come to think of it, you might even be able to get away with just using a different shortcut to a different version of the exe (you'll have to wait for it as Markus said above). You'd have to ask Markus whether that would work to be sure, but it might. I think I might have done that in the past too, but I can't say for sure. Memory is a bit sketchy.

Well, darn it. Make sure you upload the .dat files to Markus like he asked. If there's something that can be done, he'll be sure to let you know.

Wouldn't the problem with using 2 installations be that both instances of the game would expect to use the same folder in My Documents? Is there a way to change that so they use different folders?

Exports from 9.2.0 will import fine into 9.1.6 and vice-versa, so no need for two different exes...

I have posted in the technical section and hope that maybe by posting here you can solve my problem. There is also another user having the same problem. I downloaded the patch and installed it over the the latest version to upgrade to 9.2.0. and when I started the game it crashed. So I uninstalled the game and reinstalled the version 9.1.6 and it still crashes upon starting the game. I then completely removed all files on my computer and downloaded 9.1.6 form the OOTP website and installed it and it still crashes. I am including the error file that was generated when OOTP shut down. Hope someone can help as I can't play the game

Thanks for the patch.

One question - is it just me or does the "Evaluating possible trades" progress bar now move at the speed of molasses at absolute zero?

I'm referring to the procedure that occurs after you select "make this work now" dialogue in the trade screen.
