Off Topic -Death in the Family

Max the Wonderdog, my best bud for the last 14 years breathed his last today. A little guy with a heart as big as his whole body. Never be another dog like him.

Sorry to interrupt the flow, guys.

So sorry Cap. 13/14 always seems to be the cringe region, I've lost two good freinds in my life at that age.

My heart goes out to you.

Yeah, that's too bad. There are things purer than the unconditional love a dog gives to a man, but there aren't many.

Hard to remember a tougher decision I've had to make in my life. My wife is still broken up about it and as I sit here writing this I'm tearing up. Wot a sap, eh?

There is nothing wrong with shedding some tears when they have been part of the family for that long. My sister had a dog that they had to have put down 2 days after Christmas about four years ago, and only recently bought a new dog.

Her dog was 16. RIP

Take Care,
Cap

It is never easy to make a decision to put down a pet that has been a long time family member. I've cried over a lot less, myself. We all have our times of grief and muddle along through them as best we can. You've got friends in your corner, here.

Cap,

Something always told me that there was a kind heart behind your rough exterior. I know how you feel. I have pretty much lived as a zookeeper for most of my life (currently a dog and three cats). As a result, I've had to make the type of decision you and the wife made far too often in the past.

With the loss of a loved one there's always that immeidate emptiness, a void that you think will never be completely filled. And when it's age related or long term illness, our image is of the decline and that lingers for some time.

But with the passage of time, you take a more comprehensive view. You think of the crazy things, the laughs, and the love. You begin to appreciate that you had all those wonderful moments together.

As I think of the passing of those I've loved through the years it's a smile (sometimes a laugh) rather than a tear marking my countenance. And I understand that there really isn't a void. Although they are no longer in my physical presence, they have become a part of me.

Once again, I'm sincerely saddened to hear of your loss.

Regards,

Prof

So well put Professor.
Sorry to hear about your loss Cap, but many as you can see have gone through the same sad time. I had to put my old Dobermann down a couple of years ago. My poor old dog even gave his paw for the lady vet to hold just before she put him down. I stroked his poor old head and thanked him for being my dog and then had to turn away from the lady as the tears swelled up in my eyes.
Now Cap my wife and i all though we still miss our Sabre so much can talk about the funny things he did and smile between the tears.

Sympathies Cap. Mate its so hard when you have to make that heartbreaking decision. I still get upset about my dog from 16years ago.

Chin Up, with ya.

Sorry for your loss Cap. I went through the same situation a few years back and it's no fun.

Cap,

I am sorry to hear about Max's passing. I lost my big softy Max the cat (23 pounds) when he was 8 1/2, and was diagnosed with invasive cancer (in 1997). He lived a month, and it was sad when he died, and wife numbero uno moved out the next week, another sad day.

There have been a number of eloquent posts to you. I had another cat, Houdini, who I inherited at age 16 from my vet, who was dying (the vet), and old Houdini lived to be almost 22 and captured my heart. When it was her time to go, I belatedly knew it, and didn't want to prolong her life just to make me happy.

I write stories about my pets' passing, and about human events as well, and am up to about 20 of them. And working on one, for the cat that lived with me longer in my house (18 years) than anyone, human or feline. That one's 2 years and not quite ready yet, so, yes, we all mourn. I hope to get my stories, the Tails of the Rainbow Bridge, published soon.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I hope I outlive all my 8 1/2 cats, as I can't see who'd take care of them otherwise, though one of my nevvies has said he'd step up!

Max will be there to greet you one day. And my damned phishing software won't let me send the cat emoticon!

I've been there. Twice. One was 16 and the other was 14. I still have the German Shepherd's collar. The last was more than 25 years ago and I still am not over it, silly as that may sound to some.

I have not had a dog since and never will have another one.

So I know what you are feeling now. Take care, man.
