Moyer pitches to age 50; gets 300 W, HOF?
Jamie Moyer, currently 45, has 240 career wins. If he pitches 5 more years until the age of 50 while averaging 12 wins a season he'll notch 300 wins. Does 300 get him a call to the hall even with the longevity factor?
Moyer doesn't rule out playing to 50 "I'm not going to rule it out, if I'm still able to be effective," Moyer said. "I have an obligation here that I plan on upholding next year with the Phillies, so I will be back at 46. Hey, 50 is five years away. It's not something I'm ruling out." |

I voted yes, but I think he may not reach 300 Wins...

Well, there's no way one can logically vote for the second option.
That said, there's more to the Hall of Fame than wins. If someone gets 300 wins and somehow has a 1.79 career WHIP, I don't think I'm putting him in.

If anyone can pitch to the age 50 then that kinda defines a HOF career. Stats arent everything in baseball.

What amazes me is that he has averaged over 200 innings each of the last 7 seasons. You expect more ticky tac injuries to take their toll at that age, but he hasn't really had that problem so far. If he stays healthy, who knows? I doubt very much it will happen, but stranger things have happened.

If you base his candidacy on career statistics, no way does he get in. He's an average pitcher who just happens to have more than twice as many seasons in the big leagues as most average pitchers.

Well, then, getting to 300 wins would be irrelevant.

As big a Jamie Moyer fan as I am, I don't see him playing until he's 50. Sooner or later the end will come, and it will come quickly.

In my opinion....he would be in somewhat the same category as Bert Blylevin. I would not personally vote Moyer into the HOF before Blylevin makes it.
That is just a personal opinion, and I like Moyer too! BB needs to be in there.

Jamie Moyer is no where close to Bert Blyleven. If they are in the same category, that's a pretty huge category.

They are both pitchers who pitched a lot of innings over a long career. They are NOT close as far as HOF worthiness. Blylevin should have been in a LONG time ago. The fact that he isn't is a true shame and an injustice in my opinion. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, oversight on my part by not explaining it fully!

FWIW, a case could be made that Jamie Moyer is to Nolan Ryan what Nolan Ryan is to Bert Blyleven. Their career ERA+ from Moyer to Ryan to Rik Aalbert, are 105, 111, and 118. Also, people may say that Nolan Ryan is more notable because of all the strikeouts but need I remind people of Bert Blyleven's facial hair? To this day I call a certain form of beard a "full Blyleven". Also, I remember in one of the Rotisserie League annuals (produced by the guys who created the original Rotisserie League back in the 1980s) they mentioned that he liked to wear a T-shirt that said "I Love To Fart". If that's not a Hall of Famer I am not sure what is.

Jamie Moyer would be slightly below, but closer to the Nolan Ryan category. Whereas Bert Blyleven was much better than either of them.

Blylevin was a great pitcher but wasnt close to Ryan in talent. Ryan was an athletic monster and his personal achievements are the very embodiment of what a HoF career should be about.

Ahhhh...this is making me feel nostalgic. The Nolan Ryan discussions from a few years ago were fun.
Start here for the warm-up.

What if there is a huge war and all younger American players get drafted, so Moyer get to dominate the league?
