That was in an unsanctioned fight in Ukraine after he had been barred from fighting in the US and Japan because of the pre-existing condition that killed him.

Hard to really blame MMA for that one.

It was ten years ago, by the way. Not "a couple."

There's been enough long and drawn out grappling in this thread for it to be sanctioned as an MMA bout methinks.

Well you get what you want.

I guess the other thing that chaps my rear about meat heads bent on bragging how MMA is somehow "tougher" than boxing is this: what's the worst thing that could happen to an MMA athlete? They break a bone? They then tap out (can you imagine what would happen to a boxer's career if they "tapped out?).

I can't count on both hands the number of times I've seen boxers finish fights with a broken bone, and I can name a few instances in which boxers with broken bones have won their fight. If you take the complete history of boxing, I'm sure the number of broken-bones-as-a-minor-annoyance are legion.

1. Who says it's 'tougher,' especially here? More difficult in terms of needing to train three disciplines instead of one, but I've never seen anyone with an IQ above 60 (which rules out most Sherdog posters) say it's tougher in terms of brutality.

Most MMA fans argue that MMA is safer.

2. MMA fighters finish fights with broken bones quite often, especially given that it's much easier to break your hand in 5 oz. MMA gloves. And if winning fights with broken bones is your metric, Rich Franklin broke his hand in the first round of a title defense and won a decision, and Randy Couture finished off Gonzaga while having a broken arm from blocking a kick.

I've said it a hundred times, and I expect I'll have to say it a hundred more: They're different sports so comparing them is pointless.

Well I wish more people shared that viewpoint.

Living in Las Vegas where both sports claim as Meccas, it's an enormously annoying (but unnecessary) debate and it gets to me at times. I'd prefer MMA fans to boast about the merits of their sport without denigrating the sport of boxing, but few seem to be able to. Rather, most MMA fans I personally know view MMA somehow as an improvement on boxing and therefore boxing is no longer a sport necessary for existence.

A boxing fan can only take so much of that.

I'm a fan of both. I don't see why I should have to pick a side. It's like having to choose between hockey and soccer just because the goal of both is to put an object in a net.

Nah, that would be pretty stupid.

QFT.

I enjoy most combat sports with MMA, kickboxing, and boxing being among my favorites.
