OOTP WEBPAGES USING BMPS for logos?!?!?

WHY OH WHY!!!!!

UGHHHHHHHHH..... make it so the logos for the ootp5 generated webpages are in jpeg.... BMPS are evil, they take up WAY more space then jpeg images and makes load the page over the net way too slow....

http://www.fragoff.org/ngbl/stats/box.html

page loads sooooooo slow... just because of the bmps.. you dont use BMPS on webpages period!!!! What was the logic in using this setup?

Markus made an attempt to switch to JPGs in Version 5 but had some problems and had to drop the conversion in order to meet the release date. I'm sure he'll try again at some point.

Right after I upload the html files I take the box.html and do a find-replace on all the img tags to take them out. With the bmps, the total size of box.html was over 2 mb. That's way too big for a web page.

Not to mention that bmps don't show up on some browsers.

yea BMPS are bad, i've seen worse, PNG. PNG takes 10000 years to load even with a cable modem.

PNGs worse than BMPs?? I think someone needs to convert a BMP into a PNG and see the size diff.

EDIT: I just converted a 67KB BMP into a 4KB PNG, same size as a JPEG, but better quality than a JPEG

I'm sure. I'm a big proponent of PNG just for the simple fact that even though it has such a small file size it retains much of an image's quality. Now granted, not all converted PNGs will have the same file size as JPEGs, some will be larger, but it should never even be close to as big as a BMP.

EDIT: I should elaborate. For a "photo" image, a PNG will be fairly large (tho not as large as a BMP), but for a simple homemade graphic (OOTP team logo?), it should be close if not equal to the size of a JPEG. It basically has to do with how detailed the image is.

You might want to read more about what image formats suit what type of images best. I suspect that you are probably making your images' file sizes much larger than need be (and perhaps in actuality losing, not gaining quality) if you are saving them all as GIFs.

Here's a short article that may help:

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

My theory:

Markus has economical ties with certain .bmp manufacturers making it in his financial best interests to continue with .bmp files despite the issues they cause.

He likely feels that if we are at the point where what type of image files ottp websites use, we are probably die hard enough OOTPers that we will overlook it and move on, while he continues to line his pockets with the .bmp spoils at the expense of zyks bandwidth.
