Not even close. Who was the guy that had his car flip end over end at Daytona? Ernie something? Would have been 1995 or so...

I don't think the guy died in the crash I was talking about. I think he spent a long time in the hospital though.

Once he started decelerating and just doing flip after flip, as long as no one ran into him, he wasn't in much danger. It's spectacular, for sure, but simply rolling isn't very dangerous - these cars are built to endure such events.

He'll have someting cool to tell his grandchildren, though.

I have seen worse just from what little I watch on TV. One guy's car did a half flip, half twist, that caused him to land on the front bumper. It was like a kid jumping on a trampoline the way it "bounced". Once it landed again it rolled for awhile. Cant remember the driver, but not only was he not injured, he was out there wanting to fight.

Seriously? What about that crash at the Monza (I think) in the early 50s where the guy's car broke apart and flew into the stands? Something like 50 people died in that, including the driver.

I have to admit that I have a morbid interest in tragedies like that. However, I don't think that the coverage of this crash speaks terribly well for the sport. "Hey, Jim Joe Bob, this was really ugly! I can't believe he survived! Let's watch it 356432 more times to be sure."

ETA: Okay, fine. The Grand Prix is not NASCAR. However, they're both about racing cars so I refuse to retract my point!

Two of Canada's best drivers died in race car crashes - Greg Moore and Gilles Villeneuve.

If you have 10 minutes and you want to watch one of the most spectacular moments in F1 recorded history, check out the battle for 2nd place between Arnoux and Villeneuve at the 1979 Dijon Grand Prix.

Ernie Irvan,he lost sight in one eye over that crash,that crash yesterday was bad but not even close to the worse ever.

Alessandro Zanardi, if he's who you're thinking about, lost them in CART, not F1.

McDowell's crash may not look that bad, but 10 years ago that's a basilar skull fracture. The car rolling isn't a big deal as long as the rollcage stays together, the scary part is the initial 190+ mph impact at an awkward angle. That's the same sort of impact Tony Roper, Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Earnhardt had, except those guys weren't going as fast. Jeff Gordon's crash in the 600 miler at Lowe's last year was also one that would have been pretty bad prior to the SAFER barrier/HANS device.
