And today's useless titbit of information is :

If a contraction of a word ends in the same letter as the original word a full stop is not needed after it. So Mr is the shortened form of Mister and since both end in an 'r' it would be Mr Duffy.

I don't know if vBulletin falls for the same trick that other forum software does, in that putting something like [ B ] [ / B ] (without the spaces) in the middle of a banned word allows the word to be shown unedited because of the bolded blank character...

edit : it doesn't fall for it, but does it object to S****horpe as most swear filters do...

Are you really going to to take them up on the offer of $25,000? I sure would doubt it.
Except we're talking about $25 and $40, not $25,000 and $40,000.

Thanks for the update Markus, I feel like a little kid waiting for Santa to come. I have been around since Season Ticket Baseball and have to say that 2008 is the best yet. Bring on the pre-order....

That's actually a British English rule; American English has "Mr." for the contraction.

Markus's location says Islington (for some reason that I haven't fathomed) so he should be using proper English...

Yea, this is exactly the same. In Bizarro World, where $40 = $40k.

Of course you won't spend a significant chunk of your annual income on something sight unseen. But you just might take that crazy leap into the unknown for a couple hours of salary.

And by the way, car dealerships offer pre-orders on cars that aren't out yet quite often. Did you think that analogy through?
Not to mention $500,000 & up houses and condos.

Seeing how I bought the last four versions of the car, and was thrilled by them, I would have prequalified for a loan at the credit union and then go buy the car.

I just want to keep you in the loop a bit OOTP 9 is in development, but has not entered beta testing yet, so the release will not be before Opening Day. We will start a preordering period in March though, so keep your eyes open for a nice offer.

Here are few of the things that will be new in the game:
- In-game sound
- Totally recoded scouting
- Revised financials, including two optional revenue sharing systems
- Some nifty stuff for online leagues
- Even more improved historical league support, resulting in pretty much perfect results
- Player suspensions
- Improved interface
- Improved HTML & reports
- Tons of tweaks & AI improvements
- A great new skin
- 2008 MLB rosters

This year we will not add hundreds of bells & whistles, but rather improve what we already have. Feature-wise the game is already lightyears ahead of the competition, so we're focusing on making the game more enjoyable

The price will probably be $39.90 for the full version, and $24.90 in the preorder period.

Cheers!
Markus
Hey, all. It's been a while. . .

As is my pattern with baseball sims, during the off-season, I tend to drift away from the game (as to not get sick of it) and concentrate on the other type game I love - FPS. But, now with spring training underway, I think I'll get back into OOTP.

Glad to hear the "sound" debate has been put to rest once and for all. I think I'll be preordering soon!

I look forward to this edition and thanks to Marcus and all those who worked on it!

Do you think by tweaking this version and AI improvements, that its going to make the game better finally?

A lot of the same bugs has been carrying over from version to the next version to the next etc.. And his readme always says tweak, Ai improvements, etc.

So, c&pmagic why do you hang around? Obviously you don't like or enjoy the game. Nor can you get past the bugs that others have told you the game has. Because God knows you've never found, reported, or offered fixes for anything on your own.

You try to come across as someone knowledgeable about the game and want people to respect your opinions and take your criticisms seriously. Trouble is you've never had an opinion you didn't read somewhere else first. And I doubt you've ever posted one that wasn't a cup and paste. It's really hard to have any respect for that.

To everyone else, I apologize for feeding the troll. I should know better. After all it's kind of like feeding a stray cat, they just keep coming back.

no... no... please continue. I've been warned numerous times about interacting with the idiot (including getting two warnings which were thankfully wiped out by board failures). If I could reply to the moron without getting warned/banned, I definitely would not be as nice as you.

1) Maybe I can play a player at a new position to get him a rating there, but the AI doesn't really comprehend this in a meaningful way. It can play a player out of position because it has no alternative, but can't really groom a player to play a new position nor choose to groom a certain player for a reason, such as, he's not good enough to start but would be a helpful bench player at the four corners, or as a third-string catcher.

Plus, IRL you don't put a guy at 3B and then wait for his "rating" to spin up like it's on the Wheel of Fortune. From the first day he plays a position, you know exactly how good or bad he is at it from his performance, and, while in some cases he may stay at exactly that level as you might rate him, it's probably equally or more common that with experience he will improve - and if he should stop playing the position, he may lose the skills again.

Finally, IRL players move down the defensive spectrum as they age. Exceptions are numerous - Omar Vizquel, Steve Finley - but the most common trajectory is for players to be forced to move toward 2B/3B, 1B or LF/RF as they get older. And, in a great many cases, lost defensive skills are directly related to injuries suffered over the course of a career. None of this is modeled to the extent that it happens in MLB.

2) I don't want to create a custom Lahman DB. So, while it may be perfectly reasonable in your opinion to have to do so, that's not what I'm asking for, and not in my opinion a feature of the game.
I'll just say I disagree. Both those items can be done in the game as it is now. Whether you don't understand or just choose to ignore that doesn't make it any less true.

The game as it stands now does not do well with moves from the IF to the OF or vice versa. Or catcher, but then again nobody moves to catcher during a career (of course, Carlton Fisk, Craig Biggio, Johnny Bench, Dale Murphy, and Mike Piazza all moved away from it with varying degrees of success). Otherwise, you are correct, sir! Also, I would not be surprised if the IF/OF/C thing gets rectified with this year's version. I would be slightly surprised if it didn't, actually.

The effects of age on defense are definitely modeled in the game currently. Perhaps one could argue that the relationship should be stronger or weaker, but there is definitely a strong relationship currently.
