Listen up, poindexters. Kevin Costner likes the new logo and uniform. You gotta a problem with that?

Quote:
A tall, tanned figure clad in white jeans and brown cowboy boots brandished a bat at home plate and squinted into the sun just before pulling an inside pitch down the third-base line.

Wait, wait, wait. Cowboy boots?

The curious footwear was about the only thing to keep onlookers from mistaking Academy Award winner Kevin Costner for one of the newest Rays as he took hacks at Progress Energy Park on Wednesday afternoon.

"[The logo] works," Costner said of the Rays' fashion change, of which he was privy to a sneak peek earlier in the day. "You'd just be glad to be a pro and be able to put on a jersey. The fact that it looks good is great."

And say, what about these new uniforms after all?

"I'd like to have one," Costner replied with a grin.
If they're good enough for Crash Davis, they're good enough for meat like us. Got it?

I don't know how Kevin Costner's opinions on design are any better than mine.

But he makes two points - the logo is indeed not that bad (compared to the uniforms), and I'd be quite happy to wear it if it meant I played in the major leagues.

YUK!!!! They took out the wrong name. They should have kept the Devils. At least they know how to win in New Jersey. They need to have the "Devil" in the name so people don't think it was named after some dude named "ray"

I like the logo, name change and unis. But I am a big Ray's fanboy.

I liked the old unis and logo. This time it's the opposite, but hey, sometimes changes like these give teams that little extra push to go in the right direction and if it works then it was well worth it. Might as well try something new seeing as how nothing else has worked.

I don't think uniforms push players to perform better, really. I'd like to see what examples you have to prove causality, though!

Their old uniforms were some of the nicest in the majors, and now they go to the plainest, most generic in the majors? Well, what do you expect from Tampa Bay baseball?

NFL teams more easily come to mind at the moment like the Rams and Seahawks. And I'm sure others could cite more whose uni changes seemed to coincide with new found success. Does it prove causality? Of course not, not much does. But like I said, might as well try something new.

Ever had the situation where things just don't seem to be going well for you, you're in the dumps and then something simple changes like you got a new dress shirt or shoes and you instantly just feel better about yourself? Reading an article on the Rays' players they really do like how they feel in these new unis (I'm sure I'd feel like a loser in green and purple too) and I firmly believe that feeling good can turn into performing well. If I didn't, I don't think I could do my job very well (I sell formal wear).

Well, yeah, proving coincidence is really easy, which is why I obviously asked for causality.

You know, I share your concern with image. Design is a great interest of mine, and sports are no different. However, I'd never venture to say that a change of uniforms gives a team a push in the right direction, because I've never seen such a demonstration.

Besides, I really don't see how the Rams and Seahawks making their uniforms uglier could have helped them .

It cannot be quantified; but never dismiss the role of psychology in sports. Here is a prime example, from the suddenly popular Tampa Bay Rays off-season thread:

Quote:
The new uniforms whether you agree with their color scheme, design or anything else is designed to dis-associate the franchise with losing.
Teams do this for a reason. This guy knows what he is talking about; he is a Rays fan.

Where is the picture of their manager holding his fingers in the shape of a gun to his head?

Found it.

*stretching the plausibility line a long way*

Between 1918 and 2004 nobody in the Red Sox had worn a haemo-dyed red sock and no World Series were won. Then Schilling decided to try out the new uniform idea and lo-and-behold, two WS in four years.

Yeah, at least Rays refers to something (fish, sunshine, or Barone). "Expos," IIRC, was either a rip-off of "Mets" or "Expo 67," a World's Fair they held in Montreal in 1967. Or both. Neither was a good inspiration for a Canadian baseball team, IMO.

I've always heard it was because of Expo 67 - I honestly don't know how it can be related to Mets, if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated. Their name indeed wasn't too pretty, but that logo was very nice!
