Especially considering the Braves production at 1B was absolutely horrendous--as in, the worst 1B production I've ever seen from any team--and now will be well above-average. This is a huge upgrade.

I agree, I just don't see the Braves improving in one area, particularly improving to the level of what Teixeira has done in his career, shifting the balance of power in the division. It's a trade they need to make, but they have many more problems in need of fixing before they become a powerhouse again.

The Braves also received a quality bullpen lefty in Ron Mahay. So there go two of the top three holes, with only a solid #3 SP being left as a gaping hole.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2954457

"Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay from Texas for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, minor league shortstop Elvis Andrus and two minor league pitchers.

Baseball America rates Saltalamacchia and Andrus as the Braves' top two prospects in their organization.

The Fort-Worth Star Telegram, citing a Rangers source, is reporting that the two pitchers Texas will receive are 19-year-old right-hander Nestali Feliz and another pitcher to be determined.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the other pitcher involved in the trade is left-handed pitching prospect Matt Harrison, ranked by Baseball America as the third-best prospect in the Braves' organization."

Seems like a decent haul for the future HOF first baseman. Feliz has put up some good numbers in rookie ball. Have no idea what the scouts think of him. Harrison is much higher rated than what his numbers would indicate.

Having three quality young catchers in the system---Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden, and Max Ramirez---along with teenage SS Elvis Andrus is exciting stuff. Especially, if Andrus shows a lot of progress at the plate.

Teixeira is almost as good in the field as he is at the plate. Braves fans are gonna grow to love Mark, especially if Atlanta gets the re-sign done quickly.

Dotel as well. That's got a nice ring to it.

I would love to get Dotel. How long would we be able to keep him?

As a Mets fan, this deal makes me worried. I think it's going to be quite a race to the end of the season.

From what I understand this is the last year of his contract (which happens to be the only year of the contract) but I believe there is a $5.5 million team option for next year.

Scratch that. It's a mutual option. So either he or the team can decline the option at the end of the season, which would make him a free agent.

And if not, the Braves would have to pay almost six mil for a setup man. Sounds like a lose-lose.

Terrible deal
Giving up your two best prospects for a 1.3 year rental

Tomorrow at work I will compare the expected wins of the Braves 1B production to what Tex would bring if he had played in Atlanta up to this point
I will be extremly suprised if the win difference will have the Braves in first place

I know they're hardly the best polling station, but from reading article responses it seems a lot of Braves fans think he's some messiah, and they're now going to win the World Series.
If that is their true belief, then I think they're going to be disappointed.

This assumes that the Braves won't resign Teixeira.

Has MLB done away with FA compensation? If not, Atlanta would receive a first rounder or two for a player of Teixeira's quality.

I'd forgotten that Teixeira played his college ball at Georgia Tech.

That's the only thing that gives me hope that Teix might consider a long-term deal at a non-Boras rate. Well that and the Braves' track record of winning that might be lucrative coming from the Rangers.

I'm not holding my breath that he signs, but there is a glimmer of hope.

98% of fans dont pay a bit of attention to the minor leagues
Baseball America is getting better and better at their system rankings and the Braves trade 4 of their top 15 players in their minor league system

For some reason the Braves have entered this weird 'win now' stage which is odd considering they are a average team at best

And he will not sign an extension
I put chances at less than 5% The Braves do not give out big money contracts and Tex will be asking for alot of money

I remember someone saying that Francoeur would never be an effective big league right fielder again.

Absolutes will bite you in the ass.

Yeah. Contrary to popular belief, Scott Boras does not control everything a player can do when it comes to a contract. *cough* *cough* Andruw Jones *cough*

Reports are today that Tex passed up 140 million 8 year deal to stay in Texas

I have to put chances below 1% now
