Honestly, and I know this will sound crazy...I'd rather see McCann go.
I don't get really crazy about young players too often, but Salty just has "it." And the more expensive McCann can bring us more in terms of finding a quality starting pitcher. Salty has a better arm than McCann's, switch hits (!), is not ridiculously slow like B-Mac (which worries me about how he will age) and is cheaper and locked up for longer. Additionally, McCann could probably draw more on the market to get us a pitcher...perhaps a top-of-the-rotation caliber arm. And if we trade McCann for a legit #2 guy (which I think is feasible), Salty will do just fine at C this season, and then we can use Andrus/Harrison/Lillibridge or whomever to pick up one of the decent-but-not-great 1B's on the market right now. If you add a pitcher who is a McCann-caliber player to this team, plus a league-average or slightly below first baseman and have Salty behind the plate, that's as good or better than a team with the current rotation--if you want to call it that--plus Teixeira. And it's certainly better long-term, especially if Teix leaves in a year and a half (which is very, very likely). I know it's blasphemous to talk about trading McCann, but I just have a feeling that we'll regret this one if we trade Salty, McCann could get us more (teams weren't willing to move younger quality arms for Salty, but probably would for McCann), and Salty is cheaper. I don't think I'm off my rocker here... Last edited by Prodigal Son; 07-27-2007 at 07:13 PM. |

I say Loney and Teixeira will have similar stats from the deadline till the end of the season. |

Why would the Dodgers treade Loney for Tex?
Loney for a 23 year old looks rather good |

The more concerning pattern for whoever, if anyone, trades for Tex before the deadline, is that in both the past two seasons, the Rangers have done better when he's either been struggling (start of 2006) or on the disabled list (recently). |

Tex has won some games for the Rangers since he's been back. He's a good player. For a time, it looked like he'd be a 50 HR guy. Now it looks more like 25 or 30, but clutch hitting wouldn't be one of my worries. He also fields his position better than 90% of the first basemen in the majors. He's a massive upgrade over Julio Franco. The difference may get the Braves a division title.

Teixeira is a .265 career hitter outside of the cozy confines of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Since they signed him, he's started 7 out of 9 games. Wouldn't that make him the starter?

That's the general logic, but there's no reason he couldn't be dealt. It's not like in football where the Braves would have to pay his bonus; McCann's contract would shift entirely to the new team. And his reasonable contract would be a big plus to any interested team.

I don't know how i'll like the trade in a few years, but Johnson, Renteria, Chipper, Teixeira, Jones, McCann, Francouer, and Willie Harris is a pretty tough lineup. Could be the best in the NL. |

Certainly an upgrade for the Braves, but as far as I can tell they'd still only have the second or third best first baseman in their division (and Texeira is hardly a stud compared to the rest of the NL - Howard, Pujols, Fielder, Lee, Young, Helton, Berkman, Delgado). ESPN's current frontpage seems to think that a team with Ryan Howard playing first base should somehow feel threatened by the Braves picking up Teixeira.

And why shouldn't they feel threatened? While it's true that Teixeira may not be the best hitting firstbaseman in the NL, the Braves are still filling a huge hole they've had in their lineup with this trade. I mean, it's not like the remainder of games this season are going to change to a homerun derby between the teams' respective firstbasemen.

Yeah, it looks like the Braves are going to try the old Rockies' style of baseball, which I'm not to thrilled about. They still need help in the rotation and the bullpen. It'll be interesting to see if Schuerholz has anything else up his sleeve. It wouldn't surprise me if he did.

Texiera may get a boost coming from the AL to the NL, too--although the reverse hasn't been true of Barry Zito this year!

The Braves are built for the playoffs now, with a high-powered offense and two stud starting pitchers. The question is whether or not they can even get to the playoffs with such poor production from the #3-#5 spots in the rotation.

Which is exactly what I was getting at in my post. How the Phillies cannot be threatened by another team in their division upgrading at a position makes absolutely zero sense.
