It wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Matsuzaka pretty much shut us down. He pitched 8.2 innings and gave up 4 runs, but none of them earned. Julio Lugo went 2-5 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and an RBI for the Red Sox.

WEEKLY THOUGHTS
An average week, going 3-4. We gave up a lot of runs, a total of 45 in the 7 games. This week will also start our movement of some of our pending free agents. Again, expect to see a whole new team by the end of the month. Also, there’s reports we could get severe thunderstorms at the All-Star game, so it may be in danger of being cancelled.

TRANSACTION NEWS
Good news for Royals fans. Angel Berroa is no longer associated with the franchise, having been traded to the San Francisco Giants for their 3rd round pick, starter Lariel Souza. This deal finally puts us within our budget for the season, and it will only improve as we keep making changes up to the deadline.

Another trade we made was to send Omaha starting pitcher Seth Etherton to the Arizona Diamondbacks for their first round pick, starting pitcher Manuel Ribera. The fans were pleased we were able to acquire Ribera.

We also waived Todd Wellemeyer with the intention of sending him to Omaha if he clears waivers. To take his place on the roster we called up Leo Nunez from Omaha. To take Berroa’s place on the 40-man roster, we added Wichita left fielder Cody Haerther.

AL Player of the Week
1B Bucky Jacobsen (CHA) .500, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 8 R

NL Player of the Week
OF Bill Hall (MIL) .417, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 12 R

TRADE PROPOSAL

The Detroit Tigers offered us 27-year-old first baseman Chris Shelton for 27-year-old catcher John Buck and 20-year-old minor league shortstop Jeff Bianchi. Shelton for Buck I would probably accept, but I’m not giving up one of our best prospects in Bianchi.

Another All-Star disaster for Commissioner Bud Selig. This one, however, was not his fault. Due to bad weather, the All-Star game was cancelled, leaving many, many angry fans. This will most likely lead to all future All-Star games being played in domes.

RUMOR

Rumors out of Pittsburgh say that Tony Graffanino wants out. Who can blame him? When told of the story, Graffanino just laughed it off.

Game #90 – Kansas City (O. Perez 7-7, 6.12 ERA) at Cleveland (C. Sabathia 9-9, 3.54 ERA)
Kansas City 10
Cleveland 3
W: O. Perez (8-7) L: C. Sabathia (9-10)
HR – KC: D. Ross (14), S. Spiezio (24)

A good win in one of Perez’s last starts in a KC uniform. He didn’t really help or hurt his value, pitching an average game. The star was David Murphy, who went 4-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. He has performed very well in split time, hitting .362.

As good as the last game was, this one was that bad. Cleveland took batting practice off our pitchers, and our guys couldn’t get anything going against player of the game Cliff Lee, who went the distance, giving up 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks and struck out 3.

Thanks for the words. This season has been one of frustration, but I'm getting real excited for some of the possibilities at the deadline. Perez should get us quite a haul, and I like the way our minor leagues are stacking up. I'm really disappointed in Greinke so far. He has great stuff, but he's not performing up to his ability. Alex Gordon will more than likely be called up after the deadline, probably to fill in at DH.

I wasn't exactly sure how this whole thing would go, but going game-by-game and doing this dynasty report has proven to be quite an enjoyable experience. It's been fun sharing my frustrations and surprises with my (mostly silent) readers. I hope everyone has enjoyed it.

(/end sentimental moment)

Joey Gathright came off the DL today. Thankfully that means that Jorge Padilla can go back to Omaha.

WEEKLY THOUGHTS
We went 2-2 in the shortened week. I keep seeing flashes of good play, but it’s usually followed by yet another bad performance. Rogers continues to show the ability that will hopefully make him into an ace someday, and Evert, Peralta, and Soria are showing some of the ability that will make them into a good bullpen combination. Teahen and German are by far leading the offense, and I need to acquire a second baseman, catcher, and first baseman either in the trade window or in free agency, as those positions are just holes in my lineup right now. They’re not the only ones, but they’re the biggest ones. I also need to hope Anastasio Turrey, my 16-year-old first round pick, develops quickly in the next couple of years, as I’m not sure if we’ll get the same David DeJesus when he comes back from his injury next year.

We traded minor league starting pitcher Ed Yarnall to the Atlanta Braves for a package of pitching prospects, headlined by their first round pick, 16-year-old Salvatore Echezarria.

AL Player of the Week

NL Player of the Week

Game #94 – Kansas City (M. Rogers 2-1, 2.57 ERA) at Baltimore (S. Trachsel 5-3, 4.97 ERA)

Kansas City 10
Baltimore 3
W: M. Rogers (3-1) L: S. Trachsel (5-4)
HR – KC: D. Ross 2 (16) BAL: E. Torres (2)

A pretty good game by our guys. Rogers was impressive again, going 8+ innings and giving up 1 run on 6 hits and 4 walks, and he struck out 2. I’d like to see him get a few more strikeouts and cut down on the walks, but that will come with some development. David Ross had a great game, going 2-5 with 2 home runs, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBIs. However, his batting average is still only at .187. Like I said before—we need a catcher.

HR – KC: J. Buck (1) BAL: B. Roberts (7), M. Mora (6), N. Markakis (10)

It was back and forth for most of the game. We scored 2 in the first and 1 in the second. Baltimore answered with 1 in the bottom of the 2nd. It looked very bleak when the Orioles scored 6 in the bottom of the 4th, but our guys showed some fight and scored 6 of our own in the top of the 5th to go up 9-7. However, we gave up 2 in the bottom of the 5th and 1 in the 6th to end the scoring and lose the game. Melvin Mora went 4-4 with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBIs for the Orioles.

Woo hoo! I see my boy Buck hit his first homer of the season. That's the good part of things, but geez you really need to blow up the starting pitching. They've been even worse than the Royals of the last few years IRL, and that's pretty bad.

Looks like the John Bale as a starter experiment should be coming to an end. What do you plan to do with him next year? And I'd deal Odalis Perez for a bucket of balls at this point. And what's happened to Greinke?

Keep fighting, though, it will pay off eventually!

Game #96 – Kansas City (Z. Greinke 4-13, 6.71 ERA) at Baltimore (E. Bedard 10-6, 4.16 ERA)

Kansas City 1
Baltimore 5
W: E. Bedard (11-6) L: Z. Greinke (4-14)
HR – KC: S. Spiezio (25) BAL: R. Hernandez (12)

The game didn’t even feel this close if you can believe that. Greinke had another terrible outing going 5.1 innings and giving up all 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks. His strikeout total of 2 matched his balk total. On the offensive side of the ball, we made Bedard look like Cy Young material. He went 8 and gave up 5 hits and 2 walks, but he struck out 10.

There hasn't been a whole lot of good, that's for sure. I knew this would be a challenge, but I didn't think it would be THIS bad.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with Bale. There's really nobody in Omaha that I think could do a better job, as most of our prospects are a couple years away. Hopefully we can get a good pitcher in trades and then sign one in the offseason.

I'm planning on getting quite a bit more than a bucket of balls for Odalis. He's gotten better lately and teams seem to think a change of scenery will do him good.

Greinke.....wow. He's probably been the biggest disappointment this season. The only thing I can do is keep throwing him out there and hope something clicks.

Game #97 – Los Angeles (A) (B. Colon 2-12, 5.36 ERA) at Kansas City (J. Bale 5-7, 6.05 ERA)

W: B. Evert (3-1) L: H. Carrasco (5-3)
HR – LAA: M. Napoli (16) KC: C. Koskie (17), E. Brown (9), S. Spiezio 2 (27)

If we could score over 10 runs a game, we’d be fine. Bale gave up 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning to put us behind early. We got 2 back in the 4th, and took the lead by scoring 6 in the 5th. However, the Angels scored 2 in the 6th and 1 in the 8th, but we exploded for 7 in the 8th to run away with it. Scott Spiezio went 2-3 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored, 5 RBIs, and 2 walks to lead us.
