2007 Kansas City Royals - Here we go Again

01-01-2007
Wow. I had the strangest dream. Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds on the same team. A 9-15 spring. Mr. Glass wanting us to have a winning record and drinking all my Crown. The fans heckling me for carrying 3 catchers and for trying to play Teahen and Gordon at second. Why the hell would I do that?

Anyway, I’m starting my new job as the GM of the Royals. I hope to make them fun to watch, especially for those like my dad who remember the “glory days.” I have a feeling I’m going to need a big stash of Crown for the first season or two though. We shall see.

1/2/2007
Two trades today:
The Padres traded minor league catchers Jason Hill and Antonio Baldomado to St. Louis for RF John Rodriguez and minor league SS Don O Connor. Um…..ok. I guess Rodriguez could make a serviceable LF.

The White Sox traded Paul Konerko to the Angels for minor league CF Reggie Willits. I can’t believe this one. Ken Williams can’t be stupid enough to believe that Thome can actually play first for an entire season can he? Oh wait. He probably can.

1/3/2007
The Dodgers traded Lieberthal and minor league C Mark Chettle to the Phillies for Jon Lieber and $3 million. What’s with teams trading 2 catchers in one deal?

The Mets sent C Ramon Castro to Washington for RP T.J. Tucker and minor league 3B Kody Kirkland.

1/4/2007
Pedro Astacio only had a stern “No comment,” when asked about the rumors he was about to sign a 3 year, $13.47 million contract with the Indians.

1/5/2007
Boston has traded 3B Mike Lowell, minor league SS Fleeting Welch, and $3 million to the Twins for 2B Luis Castillo. Wow. I’m having a major case of dιjΰ vu.

Houston sent CF Charlton Jimerson and minor league 2B Jonny Ash to the Brewers for C Damian Miller and CF Tony Gwynn.

1/8/2007
We traded MR Steve Andrade to the Angels for a group of minor leaguers, the highlight of which of 19-year old SP Tommy Mendoza.

1/10/2007
Houston sent RF Jason Lane and minor league RP Anthony DeWitt to Minnesota for SP Scott Baker.

The White Sox acquired SP Dave Bush and minor league RP Robbie Wooley from Milwaukee for CF Jerry Owens and RP Boone Logan.

1/11/2007
Colorado traded C Yorvit Torrealba and $775,000 to St. Louis for SP Anthony Reyes and C Earl Mertz. It should be interesting to see how someone with Reyes’ potential does in Colorado.

Tampa Bay traded RF Jonny Gomes and minor league 1B Wes Bankston to Oakland for SP Joe Blanton and minor league CF Ryan Goleski.

I released the dead weight that was Scott Elarton today. It cost $4 million, but it was worth every penny. The worthless bum.

1/12/2007

Philadelphia traded C Chris Coste and minor league LF Josh Kroeger to Washington for LF Wayne Lydon and minor league CL Thomas Wilson. I’m sure excited about that trade.

1/13/2007
SP Pedro Astacio signed a 3 year, $14.13 million contract with the Florida Marlins today.

1/14/2007
[sarcasm] BIG free agent rumor today, as the Giants are reportedly close to signing LF Jorge Piedra. [/sarcasm]

1/16/2007
We traded LF Chip Ambres to Milwaukee today, getting 3B Corey Koskie, MR Alec Zumwalt, and prospects, including SP Mark Rogers. There’s a good chance Koskie will not finish the season with us. He could be a valuable chip at the deadline.

1/17/2007
My first phone calls from other general managers today. The first one came from crazy Bill Bavasi in Seattle. He wanted me to give him RF Reggie Sanders, minor league 2B Irving Falu, and $1.5 million for 1B Ben Broussard. I need 1B about as much as I need 3B. I mean….ummm….moving on…

Jon Daniels of Texas was the other GM to call me. He offered me RF Jason Botts and minor league C Miguel Chavarria for C John Buck and minor league SS Chris McConnell. I think Buck is our best C and McConnell is one of our better prospects. No deal here, either.

1/20/2007
MR Chris Hammond signed a 2 year deal with Atlanta worth $8.28 million.

Rest of Preseason - 1/22-3/01

1/22/2007
I traded Gil Meche to the Cardinals today, receiving LF Scott Spiezio and a number of lower-level minor league prospects. While not providing me much flexibility this year since he was only slated to make $700,000, it will get me out of the multiple 8-figure years that were coming. Plus, the fans like the fact that we got Spiezio.

1/29/2007
We made a minor league deal today, sending CF Kenard Springer to the Cubs for SP Jerry Blevins. Just keep building that pitching prospect depth.

1/30/2007
Florida traded 3B Alfredo Amezaga and minor league C Gualterio Melgoza to Toronto for MR Jason Frasor.

2/5/2007
We made another minor league deal today, acquiring SP prospects Justin Orenduff and Scott Elbert from the Dodgers for MR prospect Leslie Nacar. None have developed like the two teams would have liked, so this is mostly a change of scenery trade.

2/12/2007
We traded 1B Justin Huber today, sending him to the Washington Nationals for SP prospect Matt Chico. It might have been too early to give up on Huber, but his potential seemed to have topped out and we have a logjam at 1B.

2/19/2007
MR Alec Zumwalt’s stay in the Royals organization didn’t last long. We acquired him from the Brewers on January 16th and traded him today to the Giants for SP prospect Craig Whitaker.

2/25/2007
Milwaukee traded SS Tony Graffanino and $800,000 to Pittsburgh for MR Damaso Marte and minor league CF J.C. Cortest.

2/26/2007
Yet another minor league deal today, as we dealt C Adam Donachie to Oakland for minor league MR Vice Mazzaro. Donachie was going to be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft and I didn't see him improving enough to make the 40 man roster.

I know some of you are saying to yourselves, “Where the hell is Alex Gordon?” He is right on the edge and once I get rid of another player, probably a first baseman or outfielder, Gordon will be added.

3/5-3/11

3/5/2007
Andy Pettitte has signed a 3 year, $17.17 million extension with the Yankees. That actually seems somewhat reasonable for a Yankees contract.

Well I said we’d probably trade a first baseman, and we did today, trading Ryan Shealey to Toronto for pitching prospects CL T.J. Beam, SP Rickey Romero, SP Chi-Hung Cheng, and SP Kurt Isenberg. Shealey was probably our best first baseman as of now, but still expendable, which says something about the state of this team. I also think Gordon might be in the bigs by the end of the season, so I need to find some way to play both him and Teahen at the same time, and I think first base is a logical fit.

Spring Training Game #4 – TB (Stokes) at KC (Hudson)
Tampa Bay 4
Kansas City 5
W: D. Riske (1-1) L: D. Waechter (1-1): S: O. Dotel (3)
HR – TB: C. Crawford (1), D. Navarro (1)
POG: B. Stokes (TB) 4 IP, H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Jorge Posada will be out at least 2 weeks after scratching his cornea in an on-base collision.

3/6/2007
Trevor Hoffman signed an extension today that will pay him $24.97 million over the next 3 years.

Spring Training Game #5 – KC (Gobble) at DET (Maroth)
Kansas City 2
Detroit 4
W: V. Darensbourg (1-0) L: K. Ray (0-1) S: T. Jones (1)
POG: M. Grudzielanek (KC) 2-3, 2 R

3/7/2007
Boston traded 1B Eric Hinske to Tampa Bay today for MR Shinji Mori.

Spring Training Game #6 – KC (Bale) at BAL (Bedard)
Kansas City 3
Baltimore 6
W: E. Bedard (1-0) L: J. Bale (1-1)
HR – KC: R. Sanders (1), M. Sweeney (1) BAL: K. Millar 2 (3), J. House (1)
POG: K. Millar (BAL) 2-2, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 3 BB

Victor Martinez of the Indians will be day-to-day for the next 2 weeks after straining a thigh muscle.

3/8/2007
A couple contract extensions signed today:
First, Andrew Jones and Atlanta agreed to a 5 year deal worth $16.49 million per year.

Also, in the shocking deal of the early season in my opinion, Michael Barrett signed with the Cubs for 7 years and $117.53 million!
At least there’s Wrigley, right Cubs fans?

Spring Training Game #7 – SEA (Weaver) at KC (Perez)

Seattle 9
Kansas City 4
W: J. Campillo (1-0) L: R. Braun (0-1) S: J. Mateo (1)
POG: R. Ibanez (SEA) 3-4, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB

3/9/2007 – Spring Training Game #8 – KC (Greinke) at TEX (Padilla)
Kansas City 7
Texas 4
W: Z. Greinke (2-0) L: V. Padilla (0-2) S: O. Dotel (4)
POG: D. DeJesus (KC) 2-2, R, 2 RBI

3/10/2007

In a trade the AARP approves of, the Tigers traded Gary Sheffield to the Padres for David Wells and minor league MR Ron Starr.

Spring Training Game #9 – LAA (Lackey) at KC (Hudson)
Los Angeles Angels 9
Kansas City 6
W: J. Lackey (1-0) L: L. Hudson (0-1) S: F. Rodriguez (3)
HR – LAA: C. Figgins (2), G. Anderson (1) KC: S. Spiezio (2), M. Sweeney (2)
POG: R. Quinlan (LAA) 2-3, 3B, R, 4 RBI

Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins will be out 1-2 weeks with a sprained ankle.

3/11/2007 – Spring Training Game #10 – KC (Gobble) at MIN (Ortiz)
Kansas City 7
Minnesota 10
W: R. Ortiz (1-1) L: J. Gobble (0-1) S: J. Nathan (2)
HR – KC: M. Grudzielanek (2) MIN: J. Lane (2), T. Hunter (1)
POG: J. Lane (MIN) 2-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

So we're 4-6 after the first week and a half of Spring Training. I'm obviously not pleased with how we've played, especially with some of the pitching performances we've had, but I'm not too disappointed, either. It just reinforces that there's a lot of work to do, but I think we're moving in the right direction.

3/12-3/18

3/12/2007
Cincinnati approached me today with an offer for RF Reggie Sanders. Reggie is definitely someone I want to get rid of, so I was pretty willing to take just about anything for him. They offered C David Ross and MR prospect Rafael Gonzalez for Sanders and $3 million. After some negotiation, I got them to agree to take the $3 million demand off the table, and we made the deal. It will improve our budget room by $3.4 million. We are still $8,271,789 above budget.

We also moved CL Brett Evert off the 40-man roster to make room for MR Jose Diaz, who our minor league coaches said was having an outstanding minor league camp. We figured we’d see how he did in big league Spring Training.

Spring Training Game #11 – OAK (Haren) at KC (Bale)
Oakland 7
Kansas City 12
W: K. Ray (1-1) L: D. Haren (0-2)
HR – OAK: M. Kotsay (1) KCA: D. Ross (5), C. Koskie (1), M. Teahen (1)
POG: C. Koskie (KC) 3-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI

3/13/2007 – Spring Training Game #12 – CLE (Byrd) at KC (Perez)
Cleveland 2
Kansas City 6
W: J. Diaz (1-0) L: J. Davis (1-1) S: O. Dotel (5)
HR – CLE: G. Sizemore (2) KC: M. Sweeney (3), J. Buck (1)
POG: J. Buck (KC) 1-1, HR, R, 3 RBI

3/15/2007 – Spring Training Game #13 – KC (Greinke) at NYA (Pettitte)
Kansas City 8
New York Yankees 4
W: Z. Greinke (3-0) L: A. Pettitte (2-1) S: O. Dotel (6)
HR – KC: D. Ross (6), C. Koskie (2), M. Sweeney (4) NYA: B. Abreu (1)
POG: C. Koskie (KC) 2-5, HR, R, RBI

3/16/2007
Morgan Ensberg signed a 2 year, $19.26 million extension with the Astros today. I may never be able to sign a free agent ever again.

Spring Training Game #14 – TOR (Ohka) at KC (Hudson)
Toronto 5
Kansas City 8
W: D. Riske (2-1) L: B. Neal (0-1) S: O. Dotel (7)
HR – TOR: F. Thomas (4) KC: C. Koskie (3), E. German (1)
POG: F. Thomas (TOR) 1-3, HR, R, 3 RBI, 2 BB

Bad news for Mets fans. Carlos Beltran will miss at least 8 weeks with a strained Achilles tendon.

Mariners pitcher Cha Seung Baek’s spring training most likely came to an end as he will miss 1-2 weeks with a finger blister.

3/17/2007 – Spring Training Game #15 – KC (Bale) at BOS (Schilling)
Kansas City 5
Boston 12
W: B. Donnelly (1-0) L: D. Riske (2-2)
HR – KC: C. Koskie (4) BOS: D. Ortiz (4)
POG: D. Ortiz (BOS) 1-3, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 BB
The starters left this game after 4 innings with the score 1-1. After 5, it was 11-5 Boston. Thank you bullpen.

Phillies closer Tom Gordon will probably shut it down until Opening Day. He has a tender shoulder that will keep him out for 1-2 weeks.

3/18/2007
Arizona has traded LF Eric Byrnes to Cleveland for 1B Ryan Garko and minor league 3B Derrick Peterson.

Spring Training Game #16 – CHA (Bush) at KC (Perez)
Chicago White Sox 11
Kansas City 10
W: H. Phillips (1-0) L: J. Soria (0-1) S: M. MacDougal (4)
HR – CHA: J. Thome (1) KC: D. Ross (7), D. DeJesus (1), M. Teahen (2)
POG: J. Thome (CHA) 3-3, 2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI

A major blow for the Angels today, as 2B Maicer Izturis tore his labrum and will miss 8 months.

3/19-3/25

3/19/2007
MR Juan Cruz has signed a 2 year extension with the Diamondbacks worth $4.18 million.

Today marked the sad end of an era in Royals baseball. I made a deal with the Phillies to send them Mike Sweeney for MR Edgar Garcia, 3B Wilinson Baez, LF Javon Moran, and 1B Mike Costanzo. Some comments from the press conference:

“I want to thank Mike for his commitment to this franchise. In my mind he will always be a Royal, and once his career is over, there will always be a place in the organization for someone of his character. Unfortunately, at this time, we could not afford to keep his contract for a team that is rebuilding a solid foundation like we are. Mike understood this and said if we could find a deal that would help the future of this franchise to go ahead and make it. I believe we got that deal, and I am happy that we could send Mike to a team that has a chance to play in the postseason.”

We also waived Wayne Franklin and designated him for assignment. He will most likely end up in Omaha, and MR Leo Nunez has taken his place.

Spring Training Game #17 – KC (Gobble) at TB (Fossum)
Kansas City 10
Tampa Bay 0
W: J. Gobble (1-1) L: C. Fossum (0-2)
HR – KC: D. Ross 2 (9), M. Grudzielanek (3), E. Brown (1), S. Spiezio (3), M. Teahen (3)
POG: D. Ross (KC) 3-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

3/20/2007
I love it when Billy Beane tries to pull a fast one. Today he offered me 1B Dan Johnson (because I need more first basemen) for the low, low price of 2B Alex Prieto and 3B Billy Butler. I couldn’t reject it fast enough.

Spring Training Game #18 – DET (Robertson) at KC (Greinke)
Detroit 14
Kansas City 5
W: N. Robertson (1-3) L: D. Riske (2-3)
HR – DET: M. Ordonez (2), C. Guillen (2), M. Thames (4)
POG: M. Thames (DET) 1-5, GS, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB

Mark Mulder will be out of the Cardinals pitching staff for the next 1-2 weeks with a tender shoulder.

3/21/2007
Contrary to all the rumors, Ichiro is staying in Seattle. He signed a 4 year deal today worth $53.96 million.

Spring Training Game #19 – BAL (Wright) at KC (Hudson)
Baltimore 5
Kansas City 14
W: L. Hudson (1-1) L: S. Rice (0-1)
HR – BAL: C. Patterson (3), K. Millar (5) KC: J. Buck (2)
POG: J. LaRue (KC) 3-4, 3 R, RBI, BB

3/22/2007 – Spring Training Game #20 – KC (Bale) at SEA (Hernandez)
Kansas City 5
Seattle 6 (in 11)
W: J. Putz (1-1) L: J. Soria (0-2)
POG: Y. Betancourt (SEA) 2-3, 2B, R, 3 RBI

Cubs closer Bob Howry will miss 2 weeks with a tender shoulder.

3/23/2007 – Spring Training Game #21 – TEX (Padilla) at KC (Perez)
Texas Rangers 9
Kansas City 11
W: J. Peralta (1-0) L: E. Gagne (1-1)
HR – TEX: G. Laird (3), M. Byrd (1) KC: A. Prieto (1)
POG: G. Laird (TEX) 3-4, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI
Alex Prieto hit a 2 run walkoff homer. Not bad for a guy with hardly any power.

3/24/2007 – Spring Training Game #22 – KC (Gobble) at LAA (Santana)
Kansas City 7
Los Angeles Angels 6
W: R. Braun (1-1) L: S. Andrade (1-1): S: O. Dotel (8)
HR – KC: D. DeJesus 2 (3)
POG: D. DeJesus (KC) 2-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

MR Juan Cruz of the Diamondbacks will miss 2 weeks with a hyperextended elbow.

3/25/2007
Brad Lidge signed an extension with the Astros for 1 year and $1.34 million.

Spring Training Game #23 – MIN (Silva) at KC (Greinke)
Minnesota 1
Kansas City 17
W: Z. Greinke (4-0) L: C. Silva (0-4)
HR – KC: A. Prieto (2), D. DeJesus 2 (5)
POG: D. DeJesus (KC) 2-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI
Wow. An offensive explosion! That was good to see in one of our last Spring Training games.

3/26/2007 – Spring Training Game #24 – KC (Diaz) at OAK (Komine)
Kansas City 10
Oakland 6
W: J. Diaz (2-0) L: S. Komine (2-1)
HR – KC: C. Koskie (5), R. Gload 2 (2), M. Teahen (4) OAK: N. Swisher (9)
POG: R. Gload (KC) 2-3, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI

Colorado catcher Chris Iannetta will miss the first 1-2 weeks of the season after suffering a scratched cornea.

Overall, I think we had a decent Spring Training. We finished with a record of 14-10, tied for first in the division. I know it doesn’t mean much, but I believe it’s a step forward.

3/28/2007
Seattle traded 1B Ben Broussard and minor league C Luis Horelica to the Giants for 2B Ray Durham and minor league C Danny Trigg.

3/30/2007
MR Scott Linebrink signed a 2 year, $9.3 million extension with the Padres today.

4/1/2007
Mr. Glass called me into his office to go over his expectations for the season. Before I went, I got into my liquor cabinet and took a few swigs of Crown.

“David, sit down. Wait a minute…is that alcohol on your breath?”

“Umm….yeah, I guess so sir.”

“Well what the hell are you holding out on me for? Go bring it in here!”

I got back and poured us some Crown and Cokes and we started discussing his expectations.

“Now David. You know we haven’t been good for a very, very, long time. That’s why I had to go hire a nobody schmuck like you. Nobody else wanted this job.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Enough will the sir crap. Anyway, I don’t expect miracles. I just expect you to have a winning season this year. Hopefully keep this city interested so I make some money. I can’t think of any other ways to pay old people less to work at Wal-Mart, so it’s getting tough for me to cut costs and make money. And if there’s one thing I love more than alcohol, it’s money. Now get out of here. And thanks for the bottle of Crown. It was a great gift.”

“But…” I started to say, but then realized it was probably better to just let him keep the bottle.

4/2/2007
Eric Gagne signed a 1 year extension with the Rangers for $6 million.

Toronto LF Matt Stairs has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

We decided to release 1B Graham Koonce today. He was not going to be on our Opening Day roster, and we could not find any takers for him, so we let him go. Our fans were not happy with this decision though.

So who will be on the Opening Day roster? Stay tuned and find out.

Another ugly, ugly game. That makes 2 in 2 starts for Greinke. The guys tried to make things somewhat interesting in the 9th by scoring 8 runs, but the two innings they gave up 7 runs in earlier made the deficit way too large to overcome.

Weekly Thoughts
We had a decent first week, finishing 2-2, only losing Greinke’s disasters. I’m hoping it’s just a little early season rust/nerves. Some of the guys in the bullpen also had rough weeks. We’ll still have to get a lot better though if we’re going to meet Glass’s expectations.

AL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mark Teixeira (TEX) .375, 3 HR, 5 R, 6 RBI

NL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Miguel Cabrera (FLO) .529, 4 HR, 6 RBI

We made another minor league trade today, sending 21-year-old RF D.T. McDowell to the Padres for C Nick Hundley, 3B Chase Headley, and a couple relief prospects.
