I thought the mention of Carter's homer was a statement of opinion, given that there's nothing definitive about choosing. But I could be wrong.

Either way, I'd rank Carter over Maz - mostly because I wasn't even born for one, and the other I watched unfold throughout the season, culminating in the World Series, etc etc. The end of the WS that were before my time I've simply watched the single game, or seen a replay of the actual moment - which isn't nearly as dramatic as witnessing the whole season, especially if you're a fan of the team in question.

well the way that I look at it what is the climax of any game that would be the most memorable, the most excitement and emotion stored into the smallest space is the game winning home-run. Every kid dreams of it, every ball player wants to achieve it. This is only increased as the stakes grow, be it the LCS, division playdowns, until you get to the top in the form of the World Series, and the top of that peak is winning the whole thing with a blast over the fence. It's like taking a Game Seven, and compressing it into a thirty second time frame from the pitch being thrown until the lap around the ballpark. The high can never be sweeter, and the low can never be more bitter.

And sorry for the delay, had to see how I could word it. I still dont' think it does it justice.

That's the thing... by that criteria, Maz's home run would be "greater" than Carter's.

Mazeroski came to the plate in a tied game in the bottom of the 9th of the 7th game of the World Series against a team who was in the tail end of the most dominant run in major league history. The Yankees were up by 3 going into the bottom of the 8th and the Pirates scored 5 to take a 2 run lead. In the top of the 9th, the Yankees tied it, making it all the more dramatic. Also, in Maz's favor is that he was a middle infielder with a slick glove but a complete noodle bat. He's one of the last people on that team one would expect to hit a walk off home run, or a home run, period.

In contrast, it was the 6th game when Carter hit his homer, and it's not like the Phillies were heavily favored or anything. Sure, the Jays were down by 2 and it was a 3 run shot to win it, but it wasn't from an unlikely character either.

Hell, even since I've been watching baseball, there's been 3 World Series finishes that I might put on the same level as Carter - '91, '97, and '01. Hell, I'd even say that the '02 game 6 was more exciting than the game 6 that Carter hit the series winner.

I'm not trying **** on what you're saying. I understand the sentimental value, but I think given the details of the two situations, there isn't really much question as to what an objective observer would find a more exciting finish between '93 and '60.

Dan Marino and John Offerdahl were my favorite football players when I was a kid, and Dale Murphy was my favorite baseball player.

Fair enough. I'll be hoenst I never saw the '97 or '01 series (or indeed any series in the last decade plus), '91 was Minnesota/Atlanta right? All one run games or something to that effect?

An objective observer would realize it's baseball, and really not very exciting no matter what happens.

Well, all of mine definitely come from personal memories...sentimental favorites, if you will.

Hockey - Gretzky, because years before he became a King, my dad would take me to the LA/Edmonton games and teach me about him. I learned to love the Kings, but also Gretzky. Also, Steve Duchesne, because he gave me his hockey stick before a playoff game, though I had to fight a guy for it. Won the fight and got the stick autographed after the game.

Baseball - Wally Joyner, because I "caught" a foul ball hit by him (I actually had my arm in a sling, but when my dad and his friend tried to catch it, they knocked it down and I picked it up) and got it autographed later. Brian Downing, because my dad had played baseball with him in high school and told me he was a class act.

Football - Tony Parrish. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...hlight=Parrish (Post #50)

With a decent defensive coordinator and Coryell as head coach I think a team like that might have at least one undefeated season. They would have almost for sure won a couple of Super Bowls and I would have loved to see them play the mid 70s Steelers and Cowboys. It would have no doubt changed the face of footall. Might still have the Cardinals in St. Louis and the Rams in L.A. with Phoenix wondering how to get a franchise.
