Dallas Mavericks on an Unprecedented Winning Streak

The Mavericks made history on Tuesday night -- not just team history, not just NBA history, but major North American pro sports history. With their 102-89 victory over the Nets, the Mavericks became the first team in NBA history to earn 51 wins in a 56-game span within a single season.

No team in the NHL or in Major League Baseball has done such a thing, either. (And in the NFL, no team has ever amassed 51 wins over any multiple-season stretch of 56 regular-season games.)

I'm actually quite surprised with all of the great 90s Bulls teams, the 80s Oilers, 90s Avalanche teams that no one ever set such a feat.

I'm surprised that the '72 Lakers, who won 33 straight, didn't match the feat.

The '98 Bulls went 72-10 but I have no idea how they amassed their victories. Apparently, not in this fashion.

If Dallas continues at the current pace and finishes with 70 wins, they'll have gone 70-8 since they stumbled out of the gate.

"Scottie Pippen, whose offer to come out of retirement has been rebuffed thus far by the Mavericks, watched from a front-row seat behind the scorer's table."

*yawn* Wake me up if they win a championship or break the Bulls' record. This most wins in x games thing is lame. I'll admit I'd be a bit more excited if it was the Suns though.

The finals really is going to be rather anti-climactic after the west finals this year. I'm intrigued by the Raptors, but if they make it to the finals it'd be a joke.

I'm sure the 2006 Heat agree.

Hey, I thought they'd kick the Mavericks butt last year. I was surprised when they fell down 0-2 I think it was. I just don't think it'll happen this year.

1. Yep, 52-30 teams from weaker conferences usually whup de ass of 60-22 teams.

2. It would help to make the playoffs.

What, you've never liked a team to beat another team that has a considerably better record? The Heat had an awesome dynamic with Wade and Shaq and plenty of experience. The Mavericks had a lot of good players, but really hadn't done much in the past. I think they have a much better shot having last year under their belts.

Winning in the playoffs and more specifically winning championships.

Compare the key players:

Riley vs Johnson. Johnson seems to be a great coach, but he was still probably green behind the ears last year. Riley might be past his peak as a coach, but you have to think that because he's been there plenty of times that he probably knew exactly what to say and when to say it.

Shaq vs Nowitzki. Both are great players and maybe skill wise last year you'd maybe take Dirk, but I just have to believe that Shaq's awesome personality probably played a great role in psyching his teammates. Dirk? I don't see that in him at all. It's not just about playing great yourself.

Wade vs... I dunno, pick 1 of Terry or Howard, heck, both if you want. It's no competition. Wade is maybe the best player in the game when it really counts. As much as I love Nash, he didn't lift his team over the Mavs. Wade certainly did.

Looking back, I'm surprised they didn't sweep them. Well, I guess they did once their backs were to the wall.

Great streak, but they still won't win 72 games.

Bold prediction there. Don't step too far out on that limb.
