I also found it rather ironic that you would bring up that thread, since this was the first post that wasn't either from a moderator or a member of the league having problems:

Ah. THAT one had nothing to do with high spirits. That was about sticking up for the unpaid moderators on this site, who have always been good to me. I wasn't just irked about the way the moderators were being put down. The thread starter had bumped the thread due to lack of attention less than six hours after first posting, so I was already primed to snark.

And we are now officially WAY off topic.

The unpaid mods have never been the issue.

The issue is that they are the ONLY form of support that is out there.

Then again, think about it for a minute... You have never had a problem getting issues resolved, but they're always issues with solo games...

OK back on topic.

I thought I should pipe up on this subject. I enjoy OOTP2006 and believe its the best delivery of solo play that has been delivered in the OOTP line. But as I write this there are more people viewing the OOTP6 and OOTP5 forums than this one. This directly related to what before 2006 OOTP delivered best in class and that was online play. Online play is the key to the entire brand and without attention to it will result in a diminished audience and a short shelf life product. If Markus ignores this demographic of his audience, the viral marketers of the OOTP franchise, then it will hurt his product and its sales. As a long-time supporter and contributor to OOTP, I want online play to be the top issue to be fixed OOTP07.

Why don't they just get a second job at the local assisted living center? I would like to remind you Madden Football has far out sold FOF and FBPro for years. Greater sales doesn't translate into greater product. See Miller Lite.

Staying off topic for a second more, OOTP has always been pretty much just Markus as it's pretty much only employee, In the move over to SI he joined a larger company, but I don't know how many people SI has dedicated to OOTP. Once Markus said that the 1.03 patch was it, he moved on to start programming 2007 pretty much full time, and that is where his focus is. Once that final patch comes out, unless Markus sees something he just has to fix(and it has happened before) then that versions official support has ended due to the number of people that work on the game (1). The community will work with you to get the game working to your expectations but it will mostly be through workarounds and all unpaid mods and others helping. Unfortunately through a lot of different factors, the community is pretty weak right now, so there is a great hole that previous versions of the game didn't have, in getting help to peoples problems.

You can say that is pretty bad support for the game, but that is the nature of the current gaming industry, for better or worse, a new game must come out just about every year, so there has to be a point where Markus needs to start working on next years product and stops trying to perfect to everyone's satisfaction the previous version.

Wrong. You'll see that when you read the OOTP 2007 feature list...

You're right about that — just look at how much the inferior Microsoft product outsells the superior Mac.

Since we're apparently staying off topic, the last time I played Madden was the 1998 version, and at that time it was superior to any of its competitors that I tried (about four). Playing with a budget, play selection, being able to design your own players, being able to play against (some) historical teams, being able to run a knockout tournament instead of being forced to play the previous season — even the interface was superior to the other playstation-type games.

Can you think of any games of this type that are any different?

Maybe a list of them in the same demographic of OOTP. I am curious as to what type of support you think they should be capable of.

Every year, when a new version of OOTP comes out, I always tell myself that I'm going to join an online league and give online play a try, yet every year I get sucked into solo play that is just so much fun that I can't tear myself away from it.

Maybe next year....

OK back on topic.

I don't know about that, I recall a thread sometime during last summer in which one online proponent (I believe Cooleyvol, but I could be wrong) vented his frustration and I think was he was then involved in the WIP (1.03) patch testing to try and correct some online issues.

From a distance, it seemed like that was some good support there.

personally, i think it says something about priorities when the programmer joins an online league created just for testing purposes.
