I am hoping that these very conservative signings are a signal that the Mets will be going after multiple higher-value players for the rotation and maybe be willing to spend for LF.

Mets reportedly close to signing Alou to a one-year deal. Alou is kind of similar to Floyd, but older and with less of an injury history. Hopefully Alou can continue to be a good player with the Mets.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe the option wasn't there, though.

Catalonotto bats left. Mets want a righty bat for LF. Alou for 1 + option is OK. Alou for 2 guaranteed is not OK. The guy can still rake but Cleveland and another AL team are offering 2 years and I wouldn't want to match that.

Catlanotto is going back to Texas for 3 years at $13M. Catalanotto for $4.3M a year is a significantly better deal than an injured Alou for $8M-$9M, regardless of what side of the plate he hits from.

Alou is just a stopgap...remember, during most of this past season it was assumed that Lastings Milledge would be the the 2007 LF...but that isn't going to pan out. Now Milledge is going to be trading for SP help, Alou will hold the fort down for a year, maybe two while either Gomez or Martinez becomes MLB ready....I like the signing...Alou for 100 games or so, especially against LHP, and Endy Chavez backing him up, I'll take that for a year....

Yea, might be trading Milledge for SP now with the Alou signing. Good platoon in LF with Chavez.

What Platoon. You're not going to play Chavez vs Righties, Alou vs Lefties. Alou hits righties as well as lefties. This is not designed as a platoon. And if it is, somebody should be shot.
We need to settle down with the Endy Chavez love a bit, I think. GH |

El Duque is also clutch in the postseason.

Not platoon, but a 66/33 situation

Alou is a nice pick-up - I just wouldn't want to shake his hand.

I have to say I'm not feeling so great about the Mets next year. Unless Minaya pulls off some really good wheeling and dealing between now and spring, I'm starting to think they had their chance this year and they will struggle next year. Pretty much a big question mark for the whole rotation, an aging team all around, a RF in serious decline, a 2B who probably won't do much, and now with Bradford looking like he's going to the Orioles, the bullpen is breaking up.
I just don't see the team being as good next year. I mean, the division is pretty bad, so they still have a shot, but so far I'm not feeling it for next season. I'm hopeful but not optimistic.

Glavine's back. 1 year, $10.5M.
Not to overstate, but I think they needed him back. GH |

Yeah, that leaves one less question mark. If they get Zito or someone along those lines, I'll be comfortable with the rotation.

Mets will be meeting with Zito tomorrow. We'll see where it leads.

I suspect nowhere. I'm hoping the Mets stand firm and don't go over the top for Zito. The fact that he's the best of this FA crop doesn't make him as valuable as a top-notch first starter.

Why skimp if you're the Mets though? Zito's not an ace in the traditional sense, but he's a heck of alot better than the other options. I'd rather pay big money to one guy you know is going to play well than half-assed money to two guys who are barely above replacement level when there are a number of arms like Perez in the Mets system who can pitch almost as well.
