Well the 49ers pretty much gave up in the 2nd minute

It's a really good thing the Bears threw that last touchdown with 16 seconds left in the first half to make it 41-0.
I mean, the Niners ARE known to go on 40 unanswered point swings, so 34 clearly wasn't enough.

Meh, even when blowing a team out you don't stop playing like it is a normal game in the first half. Just like in baseball, just because you are up 9-2 in the 2nd inning you don't stop taking the extra base or advancing on passed balls. The Bears let up in the 2nd half or a realistic score could have been 60-0. |

Thomas Jones sucks. He's terrible. He can't run worth a damn and his ineptitude pass blocking is going to get Rex killed. That 7 points is 100% his fault. His inability to get a hand on a guy is causing bad, hurried passes.
Cedric Benson would have to be literally ******ed to be a worse pass blocker. He's easily a better runner. It just infuriates me that Thomas Jones, a guy in the bottom 10% of starting RBs in football, is costing the team so much and the better player isn't on the field more. |

Have you considered the possibility that Chicago's offensive line isn't very good at run-blocking? It's not like they get much better when they put a different back in, after all.

Jones dances, Benson doesn't. That's the difference. When Jones gets 2, Benson gets 4. Also, Bears get ripped off as the refs botch ANOTHER replay. I swear they're not actually looking at the replay. NBC froze it, zoomed in, and Tillman's knee was clearly down. |

Cedric Benson who's averaging 3.3 yards per carry this season?

Right, because he rarely gets more than 1 carry in a series. But in games like last week when he was used over and over he was averaging almost 6 yards per carry.
The run Jones just busted is the best one I've seen him have all year. He actually went forward. |

I'd appreciate it if you would actually read what I say and not just quote a number that is irrelevant to it.
But here, let me make it clear: In the second quarter, Benson got the ball 4 of 7 plays. 2, 10, 9, 2 yards. That's just under 6 a carry. He got 2 carries on two other series, one a touchdown drive. And, as I type this, Jones is running like his job is in jeopardy, as it should be. Jones has had every opportunity to keep his job, and mostly he's failed. Benson has had no opportunity to take it, and when he has, he's looked good for the most part. They'd be smart to use both guys about equally for now, then slowly phase Benson in as the #1 guy. |

So, you're cherry-picking a player's best series of the season as evidence that he's better than another? Hell, Jones got more on that one second quarter carry tonight than in that entire drive you're using as evidence of Benson's superiority. It's very simple -- when Jones (or Benson, or any other NFL running back) gets holes, they pick up yardage. When they don't get holes, they don't pick up yardage (unless they're Barry Sanders). That's showing tonight.

Benson is a back who needs time to get into things. I actually think Jones is, too. The difference is that Benson is faster, stronger, and he runs forward. Until tonight, Thomas Jones has danced a la James Allen all season. It's had nothing to do with holes. He's had holes, but he hasn't hit them. He's caught passes in the open field and danced himself shy of relatively easy first downs. He's been terrible this year, especially at pass blocking and that's supposed to be a strong quality. Your holes comment has merit in general, but some guys (Benson) have a way of falling forward hole or not and getting an extra yard or two. Jones doesn't seem to do that too often. I believe Benson is better based on what I've seen, but the truth is nobody knows for sure. But when Jones has been so bad, there's no reason why Benson isn't getting more carries. Except tonight. Jones was a monster in that second half and he deserved those carries. The Bears are in a tough spot: They have two similar backs, and the more talented one is the unproven one. Both guys need 20 carries, not just 8-12, but you will never develop your top 5 pick if he doesn't get on the field. It's great having two backs, but in this case I don't think they compliment each other very well. It's not like McAllister/Bush, Dillon/Maroney, Tomlinson/Turner. It's hard to say the Bears can be much better than they are, but if Jones runs like he has prior to tonight, they're a worse team with him on the field. It's possible that the rest of the team is good enough that it won't even matter. Edit: And on another note, I wanna shank Bears fans who rip on Charles Tillman. He owned Burress tonight. I called that one. Peanut is money. |

I just think you're misplacing your anger by directing it at Jones. The Bears problem (as much as they can be said to have any problems) looks to be their offensive line, which has a hard time consistently controlling the line of scrimmage. Hell, it took them nearly half the game to figure out that Strahan and Umenyori weren't playing. Starting Benson ahead of Jones isn't going to make that running game better.
That being said, I think they're still easily the best team in the NFL this season and no one can beat them if they play relatively mistake-free.
