I feel bad to admit it, but the same thing came to my head when i first read it. It's always sad when someone is brutally murdered especially someone that young. Tragic. Miami needs to get it's act together.

Biting my tongue until more details are available.

It very well could be a random act of violence or he was shot and killed by someone aiming for someone he was with.
But given the culture of drugs, violence, gang and thug life that surrounds that school you cant help but think the worse. |

I think there's a whale of a difference between getting into stupid on-field fights and getting shot and killed. I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude on this as well.

I'd agree with you, but it's got to the point recently where you can't help but wonder what's going on over there.

What's going on over there is that the school is close to a bunch of crap neighborhoods. Nobody mentions that.
Bryan Pata was a guy who I believe was being looked at as a draft choice. It's pretty sad to here he was killed. My jaw dropped when I saw it on the crawler on ESPN. Like everyone else has said though, I guess we have to wait and see. Not enough details |

Just out of curiosity, did Pata have a role in the fight? |

This isn't the first Miami player to get shot at in the last 6-8 months, I think that's why people are saying this stuff. I'll wait for further details before commenting. Thoughts and prayers to his family. |

Is where he got shot a bad neighborhood? It's a bit southwest from Dadeland Mall.

One way to beat/get even with rival teams from the same area is to shoot them. Anything can happen in this crazy World.

No kidding - or even, what about that backup punter from Northern Colorado stabbing the starting punter from his own team in the leg?!!

I have to admit that when I saw this thread title, the first thing that came to mind wasn't an immediate sympathetic reaction but instead an angry musing of, "I bet a gun was involved." Anywhere else and I would guess a car crash or something. It's sad. My reaction is to blame the U. My first reaction is to say that it cultivates a certain culture there that makes this sort of thing all the more likely. And it's no big deal when it's a classless on-field celebration, showboating, or even a little fistfight. But when people start getting shot...and when this sort of thing goes from isolated incident to something worse... I'm just really fed up with the U. And maybe that's fair and maybe that's not fair--and I'll admit to not knowing much about this case--but it's a first reaction that comes about because of the history of a University that has proven it cares about football wins more than good citizenship in the past and now, I fear, that philosophy may be manifesting itself in more tragic ways than a mere image problem. It all starts at the top. I feel for the young man's friends and family. Last edited by Prodigal Son; 11-08-2006 at 03:25 PM. |

"Pata's death was the second incident involving guns this season for the Hurricanes.
In July, reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard before an early morning workout. Cooper was not seriously injured. Brandon Meriweather, one of Cooper's teammates and roommates, returned fire at Cooper's assailant, taking three shots that apparently missed, police said. Several Miami players, including Pata, said that incident was a robbery attempt, and cautioned other teammates to always be aware of their surroundings. "We're targets because we play for the University of Miami. ... These guys, they know who we are," Miami linebacker Jon Beason said shortly after the Cooper shooting." http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/...110806aad.html
