OOTPB Wins Prestigious "5AM Award"

It is my very great pleasure to announce that Out Of The Park Baseball has won the highly coveted 1998 Yankees "5AM Gameplay Award." Seeming to come out of nowhere on the gameplay charts, OOTPB took the prize this past Saturday night / Sunday morning.

This award has been won only once before, by the legendary Civilization. Considering the many games, baseball and others, that have come and gone between awards, this is high praise indeed.

Amazingly, my wife gave exactly the same speech at each award ceremony: "Are you crazy? Why are you still up at 5AM playing a gosh-darned game (actual expletive deleted)?" Of course, these comments add considerable significance to this achievement in terms of degree of difficulty.

Congratulations, OOTPB!

Yes, this is a great achievement for the franchise.

Next week: Markus Heinsohn named co-defendant in civil suit filed by 1998 Yankee's wife alleging video games in general and OOTP in particular have caused irrepairable harm to the social fabric of her and 1998 Yankee's household.

Is the award statue a little clock set to 5:00 AM?

She should be thankful it was not pornographic material, but a simple yet complex baseball game.

I have had three games in my life that are 5amers: Civ,OTTB, and WoW.

IINM, OOTP and dominoes are the only non-RTS games (various) that have ever gotten my 5AM award.

The original X-Com game was a repeat offender for me.

Oh, God, yes.

Neverwinter Nights online did it for me too (as well as Civ.)

I discussed my FA aquisitions and theory with my wife today on the way to the hospital to deliver my 2nd little girl.

I was able to explain it soundly, and she was savvy enough to say "Just like the Tigers do?"

It's a family delusion.

I have never played OOTP all night long. Now Civilization (II, III and IV) has forced me to skip sleeping many a night. As well as maybe when I first played Riven or Myst III and IV. Oblivion is another game that has turned me into a zombie the next morning, bloodshot eyes and all.

CIV, Myst, OOTP and Oblivion have all kept me up all night, sometimes past 5 AM. Oh, crap, I almost forgot the worst one of all, Diablo 2. I played the crap out of that game.

5 am is pretty common for me, I work nights and my days off are all screwed up sleep-wise, also no wife. But CM 01/02. The first week I had that game I played for six days. That's six 24 hour periods out of fourteen. I was taking my computer to work and using a monitor there and then taking it back home and getting six or fewer hours of sleep a day. And I like a lot of sleep. I have been considering unhooking the machine and bringing it into work for OOTP. I am in my second winter meetings and I like to obsessively look for all available trades before finally pulling the trigger and moving on.

With my first trade deadline, I spent nine hours of figuring out moves to take me over the hump, after my team had come from ten games back to get within two of the division lead in the six game weeks previous. I settled back and was satisfied and the power went out for about two seconds. All gone, right back to ten games off the lead. I had to start a new game from scratch to avoid throwing the stupid box out a window.

That's what the auto-save feature is for.

Not really. We completely skipped over Raidergoo's news.

Congratulations, Raidergoo! We're glad to see that you aren't playing games every night until 5AM!

I'm obsessive/compulsive, so a more prestigious award around my house is the '24 Hours Without a Bathroom Break' plaque. Even that would have half a dozen winners.

My first two weeks with this game were remarkably similar to wilson68's. I also ended up strating anew at the end of my marathon. It's been harder to get into it this time around, but my interest is showing signs of life now.

There is no question that this game is an obsession - I was just clearing out some hard drive space in preparation for FM07 () and I happened to look at my OOTP 'stuff' folder. Its full of logos, stadiums, graphics, basically everything I've ever downloaded/made for OOTP since I first got it a year and a half ago.

Its size?

2.31 GB.

And I've got another GB or so taken up with save games. Madness!

I haven't gotten that far with OOTP yet, but with the latest league I started, I just might.

If nothing else, this will get the award in a couple weeks:

Mrs. 1998 Yankees has read through this thread at my invitation.

I wanted to demonstrate to her that my behavior was not entirely unique or uniquely bizarre. I particularly pointed out as evidence the posts from wilson68, Curtis Cook, and Raidergoo, who was discussing the game with his wife while on their way to the maternity ward.

Nevertheless, Mrs. 1998 Yankees would like me to inform you that the next time this award is presented, it will have been renamed as the "1998 Yankees Memorial 5AM Gameplay Award."
