Whether we like it or not, the community has always been in favour of new features tacked on to the basic game infrastructure. We had the same debates about OOTP6 having 'abandoned' certain game forms, especially with initial teething problems. All the pre-release hype generated was about new things - maybe those of us more in favour of a stabilisation prior to expansion (in my cases, if OOTP2007 replaced the financial engine and redid player evaluation I'd be a happy man) need to make more of a noise before the game comes out, rather than after it.
I think Doug's on the right track here. For me, OOTP2006 is a huge improvement over 6.5 for the types of leagues I want to run. I certainly realize that isn't the case for everyone but I can only test the kind of things I enjoy and give suggestions on things I would like to see. I think that's all any of us can do.

I have a Direct TV pass for Ghana baseball. $9.95 a year gets you all the games. Very competitive....but I will say....way too many steroids...and goats.

I have no idea how you could have fun doing that, but that's the beauty of this game...to each is own. There's tons of different ways to play the game, but no right or wrong.

Right now I'm running a historical league with a fictional league with it, and I'm just GMing, simming one week at a time, to try and build a winner and deal with all the front office stuff. I'm in 1903 now, and once I get to today, I'll become a manager and play out each game. It's how I've played for many versions, and I love it, but others may think it's stupid. but I LOVE it.

That isn't stupid MattyMo...I play like that too. I finally made a set-up where I have a major league...a minor league...with one minor-league team for each team...and an International World League that doesn't have a lot of money but occasionally will steal a player or two from the Majors..usually in the ends of their careers. It is a cool set-up and it kinda gives you the player development with a little bit of the World flavor thrown in there.

The only bad thing about the set-up is that some of my players won't make the Hall of Fame because they split their career between two leagues and thus their stats.

I usually self-induct...though I hate to do that too often...you can go blind...

There is no "stupid" unless someone is being small minded. It's how you want to play it. Others may do it differently which is cool but I wouldn't waste time with people who thought it was stupid. Actually, that sounds like a cool way. Build some history and depth and then inject yourself in it.

I too enjoy simming leagues. Hell, I usually sim a fictional league 40-50 years before I even consider GMing a team. I like to establish a history of the league, for whatever reason I enjoy it more this way (I guess it gives a great sense of immersion or some such).

On many occassions I will just simulate leagues for seasons on end and then spend a couple hours looking at the stats. I'm not sure why I find this fun, as it even sounds boring to me. But alas, for reasons unknown I quite enjoy mulling over such stats.

My future endeavors are to form various "great" teams from MLB. If I can turn off aging, development, and so forth I'd like to run such a league for 20 yrs and see who does what. At the moment I lack the time to play and I still need to educate myself on how to work OOTP to do this.

One of the greatest things about this game is that I can do all the above. Plus I can download a roster db and run a current MLB league, or a historical one, or a Ghannian League, or a league on Mars for that matter (you think in a future patch we can send our scouts to Mars? :P )

now I am starting to work my way back to fanboy. I still have my issues, but many have been contained - I actually LOVE the new interface and that was one of my original biggest complaints and I have stopped playing 6.5 altogether and I only play 2006 now.

Having said all that there are still 1,000 things I would change/improve about OOTP but it has pretty much always been that way and I hope to see some of these things implemented in the future.

Now, I am not saying YOU should enjoy the game - in fact my single biggest complaint about the OOTP community these days is how many times I have seen one individual tell another individual that they SHOULD like the game. Opinions vary, some like the new game, some don't. Perhaps with time you will like it as it matures, perhaps you will never play it again.
Nice thread. I fell in love with the interface early and have never looked back, uninstalled 6.51 the other day in fact (burnin' the Mayflower, baby!!!). But that's me, I know some folks aren't as happy.

Not being able to create whole new leagues in an existing game is something I wish that I had but I suppose I'm taking a "glass half-full" approach. With 6.51 I was stuck with one league and minors that were essentially holding bins. Now I can have many. Yes it's a pain to have to create them all at once but at least I get to create them at all which is good.

And yeah I don't want to scout Nigeria or Ghana, but then why would you? No talent there. Still, I do want to scout Panama, or The Dutch Antillies, or South Korea, or any other baseball crazy nations that regularly churn out great players. I know for some folks that's not what they want to do but I know I'm not alone in enjoying this feature as well.

the interface is the problem. i can't find anything easily. its buried under a hundred clicks. obviously that becomes easier the more you play it but a successful game is one that can be played right away and can challenge someone even after a few months. this interface makes one want to quit. if i didn't have a history with previous versions i would be attempting a refund

Well if watching text go by is fun, why not go for REAL fun and go watch a teletype machine for an hour or so? That would be the ultimate, I would think.

If you can see them develop personalities thru simming, imagine how much more you could see if you actually played. I think people who purely sim are missing a lot in the game.

However, simming is your thing, it isn't mine, but we can still both use the same game, which is what makes it such a good game

Well that example was from the league I was talking about where I was watching the games (just not running a team), rather than fast simming. I told you, I like to do both.
